What a great interview. I felt like I was there drinking wine too :) just soaking up the the ground breaking grooves and great tips / info, and jigging in my chair like an excited little kid :D Thank you Thomas and Ethan...you badasses!
This was really exceptional Marlowe. I had to watch the whole thing. I like how you had him playing throughout the interview, something that many other interviewers don't do. Much thanks to you both.
Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel - move over - Marlowe DK - we want you as a talk show host - bassists only, pls! Only thing we missed was a duet with the two of you - great concept!
One of many great bass players from here in Chicago!! He gets better and better day by day!! Glad to know this genuine brother!! Marlowe...AWESOME interview!!
I think the bassplayer with Prince who played almost exclusively with a pick might be Levi Seacer Jr., who's main instrument was mostly guitar. He was very, very funky. He played the bass like a rhythm guitar: strummin' all te stringes and muting the ones he did not need to hear. Just like Nile Rodgers plays all his parts. Levi played bass on the Sign of the Times and Love Sexy tours in '87 - '89. He played mostly Guild and Alembic (Spoiler) basses.
This was a great interview. MarloweDK is a talented bass player and has great interviewing skills too. Musician interviewers ask the questions I'm more interested in. I'd like to see Marlowe interview Prince and Billy Cox.... I had never heard of Ethan Farmer, but this guy is a monster on the bass. All his grooves make you move. That impromptu outro was gorgeous. I can't believe it just came off the top of his head, but I guess when you've been playing since 5, it's more like talking, walking or singing, so he can do that. Hearing you guys talk about your influences at the beginning, I knew there was a reason I liked MarloweDK's flavor on the bass. There a lot of bass players/instructors on YT these days, but Marlowe (and Ethan) have that seasoning that's just right. Very cool.
the upload of this vid lined up perfectly with me falling back in love with my jazz bass (had been playing other instruments lately). Great interview! thanks so much!
at 24:12 ethan is saying he loves OLD strings khahkahkahka I can imagine what's going on Marlowe's head: "no way, I change my strings evey week and always tell people that's the secret for my tone"
So fun to watch!! It was like two friends just hanging out taking about bass. It was like there was no camera in the room. Thanks for that awesome interview MarloweDK!!
This is an excellent video, so much information here that I have not thought about in years. I always did a lot of improvised lines and stuck to the signature lines that defined the song when necessary and never got had a problem, no one complained even in the studio...
I saw a video of him playing with Lionel Richie and it looked so effortless than I thought he wasn't playing live. Then I watched more closely and he's just that good. 😂
Thank you so much DK. It is very refreshing to hear 2 guys have a conversation about the bass world that is......correct. There are so many people out there with there own theories on how music works. To hear things like Nashville Number System and charts. It's reaffirming. I was around Nashville back in the early 90's, Urban Cowboy part II days, and I learned these things. Most local yocal musicians are just clueless when it comes to this level of the craft. And what's sad is you try to give them a little insight and they don't believe you. Sorry for ramblin. Thank you guys.
YES!!! BrownMark rumbles and props to him from Prince days. LOVE IT> gonna learn from this. to me that IS bass - the down and dirty rumble with the pops and licks every 4 bars. So funky.
I have always said that I play a five string because I'm lazy, Ethan is the only other person I have heard say that. I thought I was the only lazy one! Nice interview...
Ethan Farmer is a bad dude. And I agree with him about CBS-era Jazz basses: Those instruments have a uniquely beautiful tone quality because of an unforeseen quirk in their design. When Fender-CBS decided to move the bridge pickup back about a 1/4" so it would fit under the ashtray-shape bridge cover it changed the voice of the instrument when both pickups were turned up. Combined with the Ash body/Maple Neck, those late 60s-late 70s J Basses have a little more bite, more slice, more bite, more nasty nasal...more Funk. Perfect for the music.
It's so funny to see Thomas in this video. He's like a little kid in a Candy store. Thomas is in my book one of the best out there but it's so nice to see that no matter how good one is they still have heroes.
I bought one of those tcelectronics BH800 5 days ago. It lasted two tone print changes! I hear many bass players have had this problem with that amp. I sent that back and ordered The RH750. I was very disappointed with the Tone print. Great idea but not problem free on the BH amps
This is a great format for an interview with a really good bassist. It's also great to see the amazing Brownmark get a mention. Re: Prince's bassists playing with a pick - check out Levi Seacer playing pick with Prince at 2.15 on this clip. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5r1TfPnIZdw.html
I am struggling trying to find a video on running into a song with a bass or walking into a song with a bass guitar.. Do you have any videos of this ..... I am not sure if im using the correct terminology. but I am trying to describe a fancy intro either sliding down or up the neck while intering a song please can you help me find this ?
Hey Marlowe great interview. You were able to tell what key Ethan was playing in at 07:45. Is that determined by the first note that is played at the beginning of the riff ? Thanks
I think his reasoning for old strings is that the music he plays requires more of a vintage funk sound and feel. The "old P-bass sound".. Brand new nickel wound strings will cause to much fret buzz and take away from the "mute" factor..
in my opinion ... I think any jazz bass or jazz bass clone like a peavey millenium bxp etc. ... I think they sound best with both pickups at full volume and tone all the way up... on a jazz bass.. turn everything all the way up and you will have good pick tone, finger tone and slap tone... my peavey millenium is the same way.. both pickups to 10 and tone to 10 and you're off to the races. My favorite bass on earth is a fender aerodyne jazz bass... the p bass pickup and jazz bridge pickup sound so damn good together its dumb!
This is a very good interview. Lots of good information and fun to watch! Only musicians should interview musicians. I remember a good interview of guitarist John McLaughlin by guitarist Robert Fripp (published in Guitar Player) that had similar qualities: useful but fun. No stupid gossipy stuff.
The main take away for me is find your own voice. I never want to sound like someone else. Learn the song but add your own flavor without taking away from the song.
It´s like once a famous musician said: "Learn all fancy stuff from the Best and forget next time in order to be yourself! " People will hear the difference! (next time!) :))
Ethan is the sickest man when it comes to locking with a whole band, go listen to him playing with i think en sync i dont know but a boy band Ethan has sounding like Prince material? This cat is ridiculous
