Ian, Scott and Sharon!!!! Thank You again for allowing me to share a little bit of me to your audience! I'm grateful for the connections made and I look forward to working with you all more in the future!!!
Thank you Justin for show your self out there I been fallowing you for almost 15 years and you are my example as bass player musician on gospel more than other gospel bass player. keep doing more videos 👊 and stay bless my Brother clean clear and precise ill take that as my lesson
Thanks for the great interview! Can you tell me which Album did you mention exactly? There is Greg Howe, Dennis Chambers and Victor Wooten but I can not find with Richard Bona.. Even on youtube there is no video of them...
The way Scott and Ian are so gracious and respectful to Justin and all of the players they interview is so awesome to see. They show so much respect to these bassists!
When Justin Raines said that he spent a year on his double thumb technique before he went public, he served up a big dose of perspective on the difference between being able to play a few licks and really have a clean technique.
Justin is not only one of the most skilled, gifted, and knowledgeable bassists(and drummers) in the business who has mastered his craft, but he's also an intelligent, humble, and chill dude!!! Everything he plays is a bass masterclass and he's a masterclass of playing fills without overplaying and being a distraction! He reminds me of the late great Aaron Spears who played some INSANE EXTRATERRESTRIAL drum fills and SOME HOW NEVER MISSED THE ONE!!! Yes, he plays some incredible basses but HE makes his basses SING!!! Thank you for an OUTSTANDING INTERVIEW!!! I'm inspired every time I see Justin play and hear him speak!!! Thank God for Justin Raines!!!
Absolutely man! Just wanna throw Matt Ramsey (Kirk Franklin’s bassist)if u didn’t know about him. That guy and Justin Raines are easily top 3 along with Sharay Reed in my opinion. Their playing styles are different but Matt is super melodic with his playing, picking and fills. Check him out if u haven’t!
I notices that he keeps his thumb anchored on the B string yet he keeps the other strings from ringing. I play like that too. (just not nearly as well). Is he using the right hand pinky and the ring finger to mute? I have not been able to make that work, and the floating thumb technique throws me off too.
@@gimmeagig When I switched from 4-string to 5 and 6-string bass, it took me a while and a lot of practice to adjust to the floating thumb technique. It's automatic now even when I play a 4-string. It takes putting in the work and patience.
I had the pleasure of meeting Justin a few years ago. I'd been following him for a few years prior to that. He really disproved the "Never meet your heros" thing. What an incredibly kind, and humble person! Truly inspiring. Thank you for doing this interview, great questions all the way through.
Justin's MTD Saratoga always sounds so clean and well balanced no matter where he is on the neck. I know part of it is just his play-style, but not every bass signal comes out that even throughout the frequency range. Sounds killer!
The real-deals like Justin are always the most humble, encouraging and supportive musicians out there, they are always so generous with their knowledge and do everything in their power to make the whole thing as least intimidating/overwhelming as possible so that you can get there too, imo it's the ultimate act of love towards an aspiring musician, what an amazing soul this guy is!
Would not matter at all. Music is music right. Gospel Jazz Blues Rock Reggae Punk. Its like when people say Black music, music has no colour 😊 @fross1203
Man, I wish I had had Justin as a teacher when I started playing. Aside from his excellent practical advice, he has such a gentle, encouraging vibe. 😎♥️
Just watching and listening to this podcasts and it helps you in improving more to be a better bass player...❤ thank you scott, ian and justin for sharing your knowledge on playing bass...much love brother's
Greetings! I want to first thank you all for this wonderful and inspiring interview with Justin Raines. I just want to say that I learned a lot from Justin Raines and I really appreciate his humbleness. I can now put in my practice routine some of his wisdom. Again, I just wanted to truly thank you.
Justin, such respect! I pray for a quick recovery from your health issues and a new kidney soon brother. You are such a bass inspiration. Thanks Scott and Ian. Your interviews are a real blessing.
So glad to see Justin being featured in these interviews!!! I love hearing his story, development as a musician and at the same time staying so humble. Thank you Scott and Ian.
Watching videos on Scott's Bass Lessons is like watching a good movie for the first time. It is quite enjoyable, informative, entertaining and educational, even without popcorn.
We've actually done several of Israel's songs at my church and I've had the honor of playing bass on those songs. I have so much fun doing it. I don't do it nearly as much justice as Justin does being the originator, but man it's awesome to see the master at work here! Such a big fan!
Thanks so much you two for a great interview. Ian, I’m 67 years young and still striving on the bass, this was so inspiring. Justin you are such an inspiration. God Bless and thank you for all of your creativeness.🙏
I don't normally comment to any video here but thank you SBL and Ian for taking time with one my bass heroes. All I can say is, I WANT MORE FROM JUSTIN!!!! ❤️
Such a great perspective about the “no short cuts!” What most people don’t realize about all the professional musicians traveling is the thousands of hours of hard work and practicing and sacrifices they have made to be where they are and play how they play! People just want to know the secret but it’s hard work! Justin is so amazing and so nice!
What a beautiful humble man. Just a great inspiration! I found myself smiling at so many of his drops of great tips and techniques. Like you said what a treat! God bless you Justin! I learned so much with just my ears today.
Hey Scott, Now You're crackin' the safe! Gospel music is where all the bass 'beasts' are thriving! There are some ridiculous killas on bass throughout the gospel industry. You're gonna find the most creative grooves and riffs in gospel music. I'm looking at how you two guys are mesmerized by Justin (and rightfully so because Justin is a baaaaad man!)🔥🔥🔥 Hold on to your hats bros. Because there are even more cats in gospel music that will knock your socks off! This was a great interview guys!
Justin is highly skilled. So humble. I wish he was my instructor. His playing techniques are top notch. Regarding distraction, i recall when Don Moen said less is more. I love Justin's position on this.
Scott, this was so great and informative. I watch a lot of your videos and this one with Justin was awesome for bass players like me. Looking to more videos😊 👍
All the way from papua new guinea 🇵🇬 to you three gentlemen and Justin..thank you so much for this interview...I learnt alot....Thank you scot...thank Ian....Justin you are amazing!..keep shining brighter every tomorrow.....much love
Beautiful interview, lots of nuggets/gems. He's a very good Bass Guitarist. His feel and fills remind me of Anthony Jackson; keeping the groove locked yet playing incredible fills. Great that you recognized my friend John Blackwell (RIP) and Richard Bona, great Musicians who I had the honour of hosting here 👏🏿🖤 Get well soon Brotha Justin, Music needs you 🙏🏿 Greetings from Uganda 🇺🇬👊🏿🖤
Thank you Scott and Ian for this great interview. Justin's ability to distill complex ideas into clear, engaging dialogue was truly commendable. Very inspiring !
THANK you guys for this interview. I was really inspiring. And to Sir Justin Raines I say Thank you for all you've given toe and to the world God bless you Sir. 🤔And whatever happened to your first Saratoga. I have longed so much for so long to own one of your signature Saratoga as my own. And to Scott and Ian, I love u Guys. You guys have thaught me a lot. God bless you All
Blessings to you all! This is what I needed to hear as a church bass player. We can learn as much as possible always. And there's no shortcut to scales! And The POCKET.
Justin came to my church in Georgia for a Saturday morning to sit with myself and a few other bass players for a masterclass session on breaking down songs and how bass playing can affect the whole band! He is awesome and always go back to those lessons I learned then to this day!
Absolutely! I saw him plays drums on gospelchops shed sessions and said he is a beast. Then I realized he was one of the bass players too and fell in love with his style. Between that and watching interviews of him I saw that he is really humble.
As an amateur church bass player I love the fact that you are digging into the gospel bass world. Yes, sometimes it seems like a whole world apart. Thank you!
What a FANTASTIC find!!! I didn't know who Justin was by name, but You started the video with my favorite song 'Rejoice' and I finally got to learn who played it and enjoyed the entire video. Didn't have time to watch it all but literally couldn't turn it off. How inspiring and motivating! THANK YOU SCOTT, IAN AND JUSTIN!!! 🔥🔥🔥
Just stumbled on this channel and love everyones humility and respect for each other. I started learning guitar on the bass, then learned chords for rhythm guitar and finally combined my rhythm guitar and bass skills to transition to lead guitar, but i'm always awed by the amount of talent i see out there. Respect to all.
Thank you for the interview. Mr Raines is a great musician and he is helping us growing musicians in ways he cannot fully comprehend. May God keep expanding your territory Mr Raines.
Definitely a master of his craft. Love this interview. The fluidity thing with bass players is different with Richard Bona because not only does he make it sound fluid but he makes it look fluid when he does it. It's hard to describe but Justin does it the same.
Thanks Scott and Ian. Couple of your well composed questions were same here. Justin, thanks for being kind to us and generous with your knowledge and experience around the bass. Thanks again Scott…so on point!
Man... Justin Raines.. arguably my favorite Bass Player of all time. I love his technique, discipline, groove.. just name it.. And more so his in-the-pocket licks.. like the one at 36:37 that made both Scott and Ian say "Yeah" as if it was rehearsed.. I found myself also saying the "Yeah" in sync.. Long life to Justin Raines!
The pocked concept: Really means 'Whatever Rif that you apply must be a perfect fit to the music patern or body of the theme... That is what is ment about the phrase {Jamming}!!! God Bless.
I had the privilege of meeting and playing with Justin “Rafiki” Raines when I was a kid at a youth convention I believe was in Boston or DC or something, I can’t remember because I was like 13 years old lol My buddy Marcus played drums and I used to hang with him and we would do what we call “sheds” at different churches where musicians basically get together and jam out and go nuts😂Justin is an incredible musician, he blew me away with his talent and most people don’t know he’s a beast on drums too!!!
What a great interview ! What I love is that when you listen to the really GREATS like Justin, they are always so humble, kind and down to earth. Plus you can feel what a great teacher he is through the way he is able to "simplify" things that look very complex. Justin's playing is so fluid and groovy... I see the similarity with Richard's fluidity. Man, I discovered Richard Bona during a small festival in France in 2002 or something. The miserable guitar player that I was was at the front row, Man, he blew my mind. He had it all: the groove, the technic. Plus he sings like a God. But I think I prefer Justin's playing because I think his playing his less "busy" than Richard's. Richard is really over the top sometimes ! Ian and Scott, you guys are great interviewers. I've been a member of SBL for nearly a year now and I've learnt so much thanks to you, even if I'm not the most consistent student outhere. I've praticed bass more in nearly a year than in the previous 13 years I played with my metal band as a self taught bass player. Keep up the great work all you and God Bless you Justin ! You're a Gem !
When I started looking for a way forward on bass, Justin's RU-vid videos and Scott's bass lessons played a huge part and still do. There is indeed no shortcut to being a solid bass player. I guess for persons like me a 'wannabe-bassist', it might be enough to enjoy the journey and be open to possibilities. Thank you for breaking it all down. JRaines is certainly exceptional and a master of the craft! Thanks again Scott, Ian and the team at SBL
Loved this interview! I had a similar expirience as Justin. As a young keyboardplayer around the year 2000 I went to North Sea Jazz Festival to see the Joe Zawinul Syndicate World Tour. I wanted to learn from this master keyboard player. And then there was Richard Bona and my complete attention went to that incredable bassplayer as I stood there with my mouth wide open. Keep up the good work!
So Good! Great questions by Ian about distraction and celebration and great answer by Justin. What I’ve learned is that it is also a culture thing. Different things can distract in different cultures. It’s having that balance of being you and play with freedom while still being able to adjust to the culture of the people.
This is nuts! I’m planning on getting a fretless bass Ibanez srf706 that’s why I’ve been watching so many bass vids equipment vids… Anyway the weird part is because the bassist at my church plays an upright bass and I love that sound. So full circle ⭕️ here’s another example of a church bassist inspiring me to push the envelope try harder different techniques equipment… It’s a blessing. Thanks for this video! ❤
Killer player! As I learn to get "fancier" on bass, I'm being drawn toward these monster gospel players. This dude is obviously such a well rounded musician overall, and what a great personality!
Thanks SBL for having JR come on and share. I totally enjoyed this interview. I learned a lot from & was inspired strongly by JR. I also learned that gospel cats are phenomenal contrary to what haters like to have us believe. To be honest many artists enjoying commercial success would look less than amazing, average even, on the gospel scene. For that; thank you JR for representing! 😂
Hands down all time favorite Bass player!- Tone and that "water smooth" playing got me immediately. I'm sure I've given that sound check video a few thousand views over the years, and one Old school "how great is our God" video I think from an AIMS conventions- I watched that video thousands of times too. Justin you are the best kind of bass player inspiration.
