The Northman
Young Prince Amleth is on the cusp of becoming a man when his father is brutally murdered by his uncle, who kidnaps the boy’s mother. Fleeing his island kingdom by boat, the child vows revenge. Two decades later, Amleth is a Viking berserker raiding Slavic villages, where a seeress reminds him of his vow: avenge his father, save his mother, kill his uncle. Traveling on a slave ship to Iceland, Amleth infiltrates his uncle’s farm with the help of Olga, an enslaved Slavic woman - and sets out to honor his vow. From visionary writer-director Robert Eggers (The Witch, The Lighthouse) comes an immersive Viking epic like no other featuring an ensemble cast including Alexander Skarsgård, Nicole Kidman, Claes Bang, Anya Taylor-Joy, Ethan Hawke, Willem Dafoe , Björk.

And he is a wonderful Canadian. The first film I saw him in as a man , and Uma Therman and Jude Law was Gattica. I am hoping to see this interesting film. I was amazed to learn that my last name has Norwegian roots- Warrior / farmer which makes sense since the Battersby , Crockford and Vowels family come from an are near Lindesfarn , where the first landings happened. My mom is Irish and I was gobsmacked that brown eyed blonds - that lovely Van Morrison song lol- are also because Dublin was a walled Viking city. I hope to see this film in the theatre.

2:35, did Ethan Hawke inadvertently let it slip that Amleth's mother was in cahoots with his uncle Fjölnir? And that Amleth is in for a rude awakening when he finds she neither needs nor wants saving? (If so, what will be his reaction? Matricide?)

i've been studying early British literature this semester in college and i couldn't agree more with what Hawke says about language. you really do lose a TON of characterization when you water down the language of a movie, especially a period piece like this one, to try for mass market appeal. that's something i love about Eggers. he wasn't fucking around with the language in The Witch and he isn't fucking around about it here, either. Hawke's performance was great and some of his dialogue really gave me chills. good stuff.

I've noticed a powerful correlation: the directors who care the most about details tend to make the classic movies that people cherish the most. A large part of the prospective (or actual) audience cares about those details, too. Ever read a forum of fans of an ongoing IP? They notice *everything.*

Hawke was basically perfectly cast: The Northman is a modern interpretation of the story of Amleth, which itself inspired Shakespeare's Hamlet, a character that Ethan Hawke portrayed in Michael Almereyda's Hamlet from the year 2000.

For those of us men (and I can only imagine women) who lost their fathers early in life, we mythologize them. I look forward to this movie so much for so many reasons, but that is a big one that always gets me. I love what Ethan says about younger generations, but unfortunately, these days (kids these days!!) that has faded. Started with the Millennial generation, but they choose to simply blame all previous generations, especially "boomers" for everything wrong in the world, while eschewing all the things they achieved.
