I used to have a set of the previous version of these (AV800 standard or something like that), worked great, zero issues in a ~40 year old house wiring. Then upgraded to the new "TP-Link Deco P9", with a set of 3 (they all have 2 ethernet ports, any of the 3 can be the one connected to the router, so it's pretty seamless setup). This one drops out when my air compressor is running, which is weird because there are 2 fridges with their own compressors and an AC unit that don't bother the trio at all. But as soon as the air compressor kicks in, the "satellites" all drop out until the compressor finishes. Other than that they work quite well.

These things can work quite well, but it depends on the house wiring. If the mains wiring between them runs all the way to the DB, speed can be less than optimal, or experience dropouts if you do something like welding. And of course, if you are a radio-ham, they radiate like mad over the mains wiring. Had it running between the router in my house to my workshop, but eventually I replaced that link with a normal ethernet cable. Inside the house it works OK.

They work well. I use them to send internet to a dwelling 200meters away. Too many trees to use radio transmission, and it gets around the 100M cat5/6 Cable length limitation.

It'll be interesting to see what you get for speeds Eddie when you take this for a test drive.. I have tried powerline networking in the past but I gave up because I could never get reliable throughput that was anywhere near the capacity quoted. I realize much of the performance potential is contingent on the particulars of the house power circuitry. I eventually just went with quailty router with wireless bridges/repeaters and I guess now we have mesh systems. I would love to have every room in the house wired for data though.

I also think it goes without saying that the condition of the electrical wiring and devices on those lines has a HUGE impact on how well ethernet over home AC power lines works!

@@KissAnalog They give false hope, they are a 50/50 shot. Most of the times the speeds are so slow its not even worth the money :(

I have a few of those. Currently running AV2000. I can't remember if it was these or the older (slower) pair, but they died and I had to replace the first electrolytic filter capacitors. Generally work pretty well. I do notice when my electric utility meter sends its data burst (about every 3 hours, over the powerline) I get a temporary network disruption. (That utility powerline smart meter system is rather annoying... It also causes my ceiling fans to make noise and some of my LED bulbs to flicker.) I was hoping these HomePlug adapters would extend the network to my barn, but no such luck. Had to go with a WiFi bridge and would like something better. It's a long walk to turn off the lights if they get left on... I used to use X10 but not since the utility smart meter so now I've gone to smart switches. With the development going in behind me, I would like to run a few cameras down there. I just picked up a WiFi HaLo (802.11ah, 900MHz) bridge a few days ago. I'm going to try and see if that will give me a more stable link.

I tested these back in '00 or so, when they were really new and got about 8mbps of actual throughout. The ISP I worked for just trashed them. Barely able to beat 802.11b. these are definitely a last resort vs running cable, or WiFi extenders.

Thanks for your feedback!! This tech is an update - I think only about 6 years old, so I wonder how much better they might be?

Hey Eddie. Interesting device. Looks like these units are mated together according to the description (pairs of 2). I'm curious what the speed is at different parts of your house. And maybe even compare that to a cat5 or 6 100' ethernet cable going to the guest room.

I am aamateur radio operater so I am not found of things like this or the broad band over power lines or even solar power since so few inverters are clean. I have no clue how these work but I would imagine that they turn the signal into high frequency and high voltage compressed modulated signal and send that down the power wire and decode at the other end. I would guess some of those opto's are being used in some form of clipping/compression system.See the crystal oscilator in the circuit so they are transforming to rf and back again, no way they would use audio as part of the process. So I am going with totaly digital and just changing the voltage and frequency of the voltage. I had zero interst in these schemes because of the radiation pattern and how it shuts down two way communication due to noise. Depending on the band you are transmiting on some of these where as bad as plasma TV's in terms of EMI/RFI. The internet over power lines that some power companies tried was so noisy you might as well have been parked next to the a spark gap generator and made two way radio communication almost impossible. Converting to RF first than doing the clipping and compression is far more accurate, fast and easy. The baluns are there for control of resistance and inductance of the power line between each unit. I would look into RF circuits the resistor and inductor layout is very much like something you would see in two way radio.

This would save me the cost of an access point to connect my lab to the rest of my network. Would like to see the technical evaluation of this device. Thanks. BTW, do you have an affiliate link to use to purchase one of these devices? (I didn't see one here...)

These things are in fact good, used to have a 100mb linksys kit in an old apartment of mine, worked great for just pulling internet. Only catch with these is that only 1 pair can really work good in a given house.

@@KissAnalog I use the BT Mini Connector VERSION 2 v2 1000Mb 1GB Gig Powerline Adapters. They can be bought second hand in the UK for a really low price. I get the same speed through Mine as I get connecting a cat 5 cable directly to the router. In the past I have had 2 burn out. One of which was a TP-Link branded adapter. You can also get them with built in wifi, so users don't have to plug in an ethernet cable.

Lol. A friend accidentally found they only worked when they turned the electric stove on. I guess that bridged the two 110v phases we use in North America.
@KissAnalog
@KissAnalog 4 месяца назад
Thanks for pointing this out. Yes I could see that it would only work on the Line/phase that it is connected to, but when you use something that works on both phases - it could tie them together through the load...interesting.

Crosses circuits just fine in my house. Does not cross phases reliably though! (And I'm only 250 feet from the transformer.)
