Thank you for this video. Finally, some posting a video with real-world common sense. I am a luxury lover. A Dior lover, too. I wholeheartedly believe EVERYONE needs to be treated with respect and make a true liveable wage. I live in the US. You are correct. We have a hustle mentality. People every day are just trying to survive. We have multi-million and billion dollar corporations here that treat their workers poorly. There are companies we all shop from that treat their workers poorly, and yet, people continue to purchase from said companies. How many other luxury brands are doing what Dior has allegedly done?!?! People truly need to think about the daily choices we all make and stop standing on their high horse. Lastly, for those in the luxury community who say they won't wear their Dior pieces, I ask why? You already paid for it. Dior already has your money. Enjoy them.❤❤❤❤

My take away is that you were making two keys points: 1. we shouldn’t heap judgement on others and 2. That we should consider our own hypocrisy and the consumer choices we make in everyday life. These are great points and I agree with both. I think the real issue is that no company should engage in modern slavery and it is more concerning when the company is making a huge profit and could pay its employees and contractors a living wage and has not taken the time and effort to ensure its supply line is ethical. I also think it’s difficult to compare a luxury purchase with every day basics such as food and fuel etc. luxury is generally purchased by people on a higher income with the resources to educate themselves on ethical production and have the luxury of choice. There is a huge proportion of the population who could never contemplate spending $5-$10k on a bag. And their resources simply don’t allow for organic grass fed meat etc. The onus should be on governments and business to ensure companies are not engaging in modern slavery and to require transparency in the supply chain. There’s a great podcast ‘Wardrobe Crisis’ that provides a lot of information on the environmental impact of the fashion industry and some great resources like ‘Good on you’ that rate brands for ethical production.

Point taken, all our hands are dirty. However, this would be a more persuasive argument if you didn't compare necessities like food & fuel sold at a cheaper prices to luxury items being sold for premium prices where they can afford to pay a fair living wage to their staff.

the luxury industry and food choices are incomparable in my opinion. I think if content creators unboxed Dior in light of the recent news, then there should be some disclosure or preface prior to the unboxing in the video. Just out of consideration and respect to what is currently in focus in the headlines. Even with knowing that its not a unique/once off situation within the industry, I think that would be the respectable thing to do.

I agree what we buy on every day basis needs to be sustainable but as you say luxury is a escape it is a fantasy and part of that fantasy is buying something that was done by an artisan who is paid well and is expert in his trade ! I think we make choices to the best of our knowledge and ability. This means there is a significant difference between making an informed choice and an uninformed one in any situation. When it comes to essentials like food, it’s understandable that not everyone has the budget to buy ethical, free-range options. However, with luxury items I believe we can be more considerate. I also think by saying ‘everyone does it’ or by pointing fingers, we can’t contribute to positive change. ❤

I think you are 100% on the mark. Unethical practices and lack of transparency about those practices is pervasive in the manufacture and sale of most goods that we purchase in this day and age. We as consumers have a lot of power as a collective, but how many people are willing and able to pay more? Reflecting on our own lifestyle and responsibilities as a consumer in the wake of this information is a much better approach than blaming and accusing others.

I have one Chanel bag left and looking to sell it. Contemporary is more my thing personally. Good talk Dayle. Certainly puts things into perspective. I’m proud to say I always choose to buy free range food where possible no matter the cost because it simply tastes better. I cannot eat salmon anymore because it seems that all the fish mongers in Melbourne (or at least where I live) are getting their salmon from the same farm, and it tastes bl**dy awful. Regarding DIOR, no one likes to be ripped off and Dior is ripping off everyone, manufacturers AND customers. I have to assume that all the subsidiaries under LVMH are possibly doing the same. Unacceptable.

This is the best video I’ve seen related to the Dior scandal. I think a lot of the problem with ethical consumption is the strong, polarized and often extreme views on it. I think earth would benefit from a more balanced approach where we develop technology and materials and implement sustainable changes without going to the extremes that makes most people give up on it. I hope LVMH, Dior and other luxury brands will feel enough pain from the scandal to start treating their workers well. I will still use my Dior products. They are well made and I will use them as an honor to the artisans who made them well - although they may not have been treated well while making them.

Hi Dayle! Some excellent insights on the subject matter. I found myself in a debate with someone recently about Dior. I tried to explain to her the hypocrisy that exists with respect to many other things in society. She told me, “too wrongs don’t make a right”. I had to give pause and think about what she said and while I agree with that sentiment, I am an adult and as such, will make my own decisions, good or bad. I don’t need to be shunned by anyone. I remember when I was a young woman and I made my very first luxury purchase, a fox fur coat. I worked so hard to save money for that coat and let me tell you, it was expensive. I purchased it for two reasons: 1) it was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen, and 2) I live in Canada, a country where winter lasts six months of the year and where temps dip down to -50 C many days during that timeframe. I bought the coat when fur was at the height of popularity but it wasn’t too long before there was a shift in the culture surrounding fur. The backlash was extraordinary. If you were seen wearing fur, animal rights activists were all over you. Some of these groups were even attacking women. What bothered me is that there was absolutely no backlash regarding leather coats, leather shoes, leather handbags etc. is that because a 🦊 is cuter than a 🐮? Cows are not slaughtered humanly, that is for sure. There is so much hypocrisy in the world, it is shocking. What I will say is this, I might agree to disagree with some people on a number of issues but I could never justify attacking anyone about the choices they make, especially without taking a good long look in the mirror. I love your content Dayle. It is my favorite by far ♥️

I care a lot of sustainability and animal rights. I am vegan and I only buy pre-owned luxury. I do still feel bad sporting around dead animal skins but I do my best to contribute further. I try my best to get my clothes second-hand but I’ve definitely bought into consumerism and it’s hard to unwind those choices sometimes. I do my best to be cognizant and make sustainable choices. I don’t support brands that have known issues I disagree with, I try to avoid single use plastics, I turn out my lights when i’m not in the room, but ultimately it’s going to take a huge lift from all consumers and corporations to help create change for a cleaner future and better working conditions and pay for workers.

It completely depends on how they have calculated the costs. I’ve seen some people online try to evaluate the cost of these items, there are entire RU-vid channels dedicated to this. The problem is that they always leave out the third (and perhaps most important) part of the equation, which is overhead costs. I’ve seen these influencers try to calculate total manufacturing costs as only the cost of labor plus materials which they would know is factually incorrect if they’ve actually spent any time in real manufacturing.

Hi Dayle, thank you for sharing your thoughts. You bring up a lot of considered points. Just yesterday I chose to buy cheaper milk for my family from one of the conglomerates when I usually try to buy from local milk producers within my state - but the prices has gone up. I know since I am able to buy luxury goods, a few cents really shouldn't matter. I got home and my husband said ' but aren't we supposed to support the small local producers?" We did buy locally produced eggs too....btw. This is just a rant, TBH I am so tired of the sentiments of Chinese factories of luxury bag makers being criticised for lower quality products - when we all want our 'it bags' or clothes quickly , I mean can we then blame the the brands to start outsourcing ? the other thing too, these skills are also dying out. I really hope these migrant workers(the ones in the Italian factories) were brought in ethically....it made me wonder if they were illegal or forced against their will. My thoughts initially were, they had to work in such conditions away from their home and family so that they can likely send money home. Probably in alot of cases a few of them are supporting their entire family. Anyway, so many thoughts....we have an idiom : when we point one finger at someone we have three fingers pointing back at ourselves.

I found the whole Balenciaga drama blown out of proportion. Yes, their PR team f-ked up. It was a really bad call . But to cancel a whole brand for a terrible advertising decision seems a bit exaggerated. They will most likely bounce back in a few years as people have already latched onto the next Dior drama and will now cancel them. Who's next ? Bulgari ? Chanel ? There must be a hypervigilence amongst those luxury brands PR teams ( one faux pas and you're out of the game ).

Very interesting topic and a good video. I live in Germany and come from a smaller town with a lot of students. For most of my life, the city was ruled by Social Democrats and the Green Party. As a student, I worked for free in a fair trade shop, and there are barter shops and shops in the city where goods are sold unpackaged. I thought it was all good. At the moment we have a fairly left-wing federal government that has set out to save the world. In the media we are constantly lectured about climate change and the benefits of hosting millions of refugees, while at the same time many social and societal problems remain unsolved. A social and fair world would be wonderful, but it is a utopia. Because it is precisely those who act morally in this way that claim special rights for themselves. 👍🏻😊

Excellent video! I've pretty much skipped through all the other YT videos about the Dior saga because they're all saying the same thing. So thanks for being brave to put an alternative viewpoint out there (at risk of being "cancelled"). I really respect that! Sigh... why can't we all just be kind to each other (and to animals!!!) and stop judging and crucifying each other? Thanks again Dayle, really enjoyed this video!

It's becoming extremely disappointing to see people receiving horrible comments because they bought a handbag, when like you said there are awful things happening in farming when it comes to food. I wonder if people look at it that food is necessary to survive and don't question how or where it comes from whereas a handbag is something unnecessary so the person buying should know better??? If i wasn't watching a few luxury based channels I wouldn't have even known about the dior situation.

Why did this amazing video just now show up in my feed 8 days later!?! A few people have asked me to give my opinion on the Dior scandal. I haven't because what would I say? It's bad. Then how do I fill 8 more minutes? You NAILED it. As bad as it obviously is, it's also just the outrage of the day. Soon enough, it will be forgotten and we'll be on to the next thing and Dior will be back in our RU-vid feeds. Also, if you're going to boycott Dior, why would you not also boycott Louis Vuitton, Tiffany & Co, Fendi, Marc Jacobs, Sephora (the list goes on) which are all owned by LVMH, the executives of which are ultimately the people responsible for the decisions that resulted in this scandal. And by boycotting, do consumers think they're hurting those executives? Absolutely not. The people most likely to feel the pain are the local sales associates who suddenly aren't receiving the commissions they rely on to pay their bills. You made an excellent point about America. Hearing our framework contrasted with yours is eye opening.

Another great video.👏👏👏👏. It is complicated. Yes, waitstaff depend on tips in the US and healthcare needs to change. On the flip side we do have the freedom to protect ourselves and we staunchly stand for our freedom of speech. No country is perfect, but I wouldn’t trade Texas for any other place to live. Thank God Julian is free, even though I don’t think it was necessary for Wikileaks to take down whatever documents the government requested.

Hope truth and change for the greater good comes out of this Dior scandal. If Dior is involved, I'm sure other LVMH brands and luxury fashion houses are as well. I bought a Lady Dior in 2022 and will still wear it without shame. We also don't know if this scandal is just isolated to the book tote. I definitely will not purchase a new Dior anytime soon, even though I still think they have some beautiful bags.

Brilliant video. As always, you put the facts forward in a calm well articulated way, that is easy to understand. I just want yo yell and argue lol Food particularly is a hard one at the moment with so many people living hand to mouth. Morals and ethics will always take a back seat to basic human needs. That may not apply to luxury, but choice is choice.

Love that you’re filming in your pj’s. You must really wanna get this off your chest. I do wonder how much people thought those book totes cost to make. Supermarkets sell simular bags for £2.50. Its made of fabric its never going to cost thousands or even hundreds to make. I brought a couple of balenciaga bags before the scandal. I havent worn them since. Worried people will think I support the brand. Im pescatarian have been for over 20 years. Tried going vegan a few times but struggle as I dont have time to go supermarket often and little local shop dont stock much vegan food. I do own leather bags. Reason being I buy them to last and plastic isnt good for the environment as the bags dont last as long and end up in landfill not biodegrading . That said Stella mcartney bags are good & last Lvmh make sooo much profit they’ve no excuse for not doing things perfectly and ensuring their workers are well treated, safe and respected

I will wear my Dior things just as I wear all of my other items. People should know that all luxury brands most likely have some unethical practices. So they might as well get rid of all of their luxury items. Love your points about food. I wonder how many people think of this.

Thanks for making this video, I think you raise some excellent points that I havent heard from other creators. I don’t believe we should villainize individuals for their choices without knowing their unique circumstances. Instead, we should look at ourselves and address our own hypocrisy and morals and strive to be better. As an example, I am staunchly opposed to the dog meat industry in China & Korea yet was eating beef, though cows are sacred in some cultures, leading me to a vegetarian lifestyle. My husband still eats meat and I would never criticize someone for doing so, it’s just what we individually can live with. That being said, I definitely do not support the exploitation of anyone and would not personally buy direct from Dior. I do believe the preloved market is fair game though as a circular economy for goods is better for the environment.

My humble opinion is until we know ALL the facts about anything, we need to be careful; the horrible working conditions found in a third party factory...were these conditions actually better than what the workers otherwise would live in? Is it a way to give their families a better life, etc.? Most of us who are blessed to be able to buy luxury don't know how the large majority of less fortunate people have to live; these migrants may just be overjoyed to have food and shelter. If I had my way, no one would EVER be mistreated, live in unsafe conditions, always have good nutrition, etc.; unfortunately, this is not reality; I don't ever want to be the cause of anything I do eliminate someone's job; you are right, we have to make the best choices we can everyday.
@DaylesAddiction
@DaylesAddiction Месяц назад
Oh I know, my thoughts were how does this now affect their ability to work if the factory was shut down - makes the problem worse, it’s a conundrum. We can all do better, none of us are perfect but we can all try to make better decisions for a greater number!

Dayle I got verbally attacked in a nightclub for wearing ....shock horror....a real fox fur! I clutched my pearls and my neck in a reflective action. She was going for the jugular...didn't allow me to get a word in. It went on and on.. When I finally explained not only was the fox un-alived at least 60 years ago....but also it was not my fur! As such it was ethical to get the most wear out of the item! But she would have none of it. She was close to frothing at the mouth. The verbal attacker carried on as if I had personally un-alived the fox on the spot. Bizarre...and funny! There is a point when we can tend to overthink things. That said, we would have a very hard trying to get International Labour Law standards enforced in China. Just no. The situation in Italy is because of the ageing population of artisans selling out and there not being a young population interested in carrying on the trade. It's more complicated than people recognise. But profit margins are at the core of it, and they're simply too high.

I will respond with a bible verse: Acts 17:30 "And the times of this ignorance God winked at 😉; but now commandeth all men every where to repent [that is, to change their old ways.]" I have changed my old ways in regards to the things that you mentioned: I am a vegetarian. I only eat organic eggs. I make cashew nut milk. I do drive a petrol car. When you do the research the manufacturer & the disposal of electric car batteries is more polluting than my car. Also if the "powers that be" really cared about the environment (and they don't), we would have cars that run off water like the Stanley Meyer’s Water Fuel Cell Car. But sadly anyone who comes up with an alternative that threatens the "powers" livelihood ends up like Stanley Meyer (RIP). The aim of all corporations is to make money & it is this love of money that is creating the issues that you mentioned 💜

I think that there is a monumental difference between a choice made while one is unaware versus a choice made when one is informed. In my opinion, it doesn’t differentiate between a luxury handbag, an energy source or a chicken. Once you know, you know. Granted, some folks may not have the budget to only purchase free-range chickens or an electric vehicle and that will determine their choices. However, I feel that if someone has $5k - 8k to purchase a Dior handbag, (going forward, not while uninformed) I’m fairly confident that they don’t care about sub-standard working conditions. That is definitely their prerogative, but please be transparent about it.
