A fascinating glimpse of the music culture and ancient traditions of Ethiopia’s Orthodox Christian culture - where music, religion and everyday life are bound closely together.

In the documentary "And David Danced: The Magical Music of Ethiopia", the filmmakers capture their impressions of music festivities, rituals and ceremonies stamped with Ethiopia’s links to far older civilizations than that of the Christianity it has embraced, to the Jerusalem of King Solomon and the Egypt of the Pharaohs.
The musical journey begins in the medieval settlement of Lalibela at the time of Timkat, the greatest ceremony of the year. Lalibela is a place surrounded by myths. It is the site of eleven rock-hewn churches, built in the late twelfth or early thirteenth century, often ranked among the wonders of the world. Here the liturgies are celebrated in the same ceremonies that were performed thousands of years ago. At the end of the celebrations, a daptara, one of the learned shamans of the priest caste, sets off to visit other holy places and to give healing and comfort to those in need.
The first stop is a village where a young, childless couple seeks help. Rituals, including an exorcism, the sacrifice of a sheep, and the recitation of magic poems, are carried out. The film captures fragments of life, telling its own story of rituals, festivities, people and beautiful landscapes.
Original title - And David Danced
Directed by Gernot Friedel (1998)
Musicians: Afememiar Alebachew, Yilak Mezgebu, Yilak Alemu, Kindanu Derebew, Binyam Belachew, Afework Negusu, Shewaye Wondifraw, Sheshi Negussie

There are a lot of fabricated events that never take place in Ethiopian culture in this "Documentary". I believe the producers fabricated some story line and added some spices to make it sound more "exotic". I'll try to set the record straight. 1. 2:45 The Azmaris never follow a "Debtera" (Priest) serving personal musicians. A debtera is strictly a religeous figure and the Azmaris are strictly worldly entertainers. Also there is no priest "caste", everyone from any family can go to the priest school and become a priest, it's not exclusive to a "caste". // 5:40 The most important instrument of the wandering azmari is not the Krar but the single stringed Masinqo. 2. 9:40 , 7:30 , 8:48The fire acrobatist! There is no such act associated with the Timket ceremony, or anywhere else in Ethiopian church. No, the people(crowd) don't cheer and whistle for an acrobatist at the door of the church while the priests are inside praising their god with hymns. There is even a rule of conduct on how to walk and when to sit and stand, when the long hours of the hymns are commenced throughout the night, let alone cheer for some acrobatics. It's all fabricated. I'm sure the producers brought it from the capital to perform and then staged the kids cheering according to their script 3. 16:47 The guy with the beanie and the Krar singing and following the priest (Debtera) singing, "Debtera, let me follow you", what a joke! That never happens. Even the melody he used is of a popular love song melody. 4. 18:45 The woman who got baptized. No, there is no singing and dancing outside while she is being baptized! People are afraid to even speak out loud when these exorcisms are commenced, let alone sing and dance. They made it look like she was dancing "Eskista" to the music outside while the evil spirit was leaving her body. Laughable! That is not how it works. The priests would repeatedly cite holy scripture and "converse" with the spirit and then finally order it to leave the person. (most baptisms or holy water showrs don't even have exorcisms. If the person doesn't show any sign of possession after the priests city holy scripture, that is it. The process is over and the person will be on their marry way.) Either way, no Eskista dance is involved. Fabricated. Also, the scrolls with pictures are not associated with the baptism ceremony and are not made by a Clergyman priest but an ex-priest* who also exercises magic - which are excommunicated from the church. //They just merged different events and mashed them together to make their "movie" sound interesting. I can't believe the priests allowed them to record them reading holly books while the woman was dancing! Sad! 5. 21:44 - 22:50 that is indeed a war song and act of praising a war hero, also performed when a war hero passes at the funeral. But the ceremony is attended by a lot more people from the village he's from and is done on the way to his grave. BUT the ceremony is more mellow with families and friends crying and shouting with a sad spirit. The cheerful fast-paced song and dance at 22:55 - 24:15 never happens. // They created a script to show what funerals to look like and inserted a non existent culture. >> A lot more misrepresentations and fabricated stuff in here. But I'm tired for now. May be I'll edit and add some other time. The reason why westerners should never be trusted to tell our stories and culture ..... they don't care about the authenticity, they just want it to sound as exotic and fascinating as possible. I have to be grateful for the footages though.

I agree on almost many points you had raised. Some points to add, as you had mentioned in a clear way, Either of Masinko and Kirar are not part of the religious activities. Begena, Tsinasin, kebero are regarded as the church instruments. So Azmari who play masinko or any one with kirar doesn't have any connection with the priests or church activity. However we should not forget on Timket in addition to the religious activities there are worldly activities(by the ordinary believers who are following) like Boys and girls creating a romantic connection, playing different worldly music, dancing, playing harmonica, demonstrating different activities, selling things etc all of which has NO connection with the main and major religious activity but still happen. So, we can't conclude some side activities didn't totally happen. My question is why the narrator is more interested with the Debtera and Kirarist? I suspect, there are few Debteras as we know who are defaulted and do some worldly things, Otherwise NO Debtera never have such close affinity to Azmari especially on a camera.

Thank you. I wish they made the documentary out of the real event instead of staging unrealistic events and misinforming the audience. The nude dancing woman is what did it for me. Definitely some weird witchy stuff that never happens within the church. So sad. Thanks again for pointing it all out.

I have never commented in RU-vid videos but i can't pass this one as an Ethiopian who has been raised in the Ethiopian Orthodox church this video doesn't make any sense. I feel like i am seeing another church's culture and tradition. The producers just wanted to make the video interesting so they added a lot of stuff. This is why a white man doesn't have to tell our story yo the world he gives us the identity he wants to not the identity we have.

There are many problems here - seems like not enough research was done. A mistake in 05:58 - the Krar is not the most important instrument of the wandering Azmaris - it is almost strictly the Masinko. The connection between the Azmari and the Debtara - can someone who is informed confirm this ? My limited knowledge is that it is invented for the filming.

Basically, Masinko is not generally used in Ethiopian orthodox church because it is believed Masinko leads peoples to be drunk, and shift the attention to woman's or mens and lead to sin. Kirar is some times used for accompanying spiritual songs but it is not used for timket. Those musical instruments used for church purposes are "Begena" (on the bible of Et Orthodox church, it is said..."David played a Begena and dances". The voice produced from Begena makes you calm and think about God. The other musical instruments are "Kebero" the two sided drums and " Tinasel" i didn't know what its called in english. Otherwise, the Azmari has no any role on the religious procession or activity. However Timket in Ethiopia, in addition to the religious activities it has traditional and cultural activities. For example it is an event where girls and boys get to know each other in romantic ways, several worldly musics played for fun and enjoyment so the Azmari usually be part of that to make the playing hot. Otherwise this side activities are totally not part of the religious Activities. I hope this will help you a little. Thanks.

I just finished watching a show that I found to be a disgraceful representation of our people, our sacred church, and our religion. The storyline did not match with Ethiopia's ancient Orthodox Church culture. I remember Afememhr Alebachew being questioned about the integrity of the representation of the church. He must have been mortified and embarrassed by the false fabrication of unrelated stories. Debtera do not have azmari with them, they will be followed by young deacons. I see this as an attack and insult to my sacred hometown, my people, and my religion. It shows the pure ignorance and arrogance of Western media. I kindly ask you to either take it down or edit it once again, as you have captured some beautiful images of Lidet, Timeket, and chanting at the churches. I can help you with this!

How disappointing to learn much of those details were fabrications too. It’s insulting and disrespectful towards Ethiopians in their faith. Soo this is an inaccurate documentary. 1: Debtera aren’t seen a “magicians” but rather well known scholars who know church scriptures, the tone of the zema/hymns, and preachers. While many have the ability to perform exorcism, it isn’t a type of magic ritual. 2: the settings of holidays is absolutely, how were they celebrating Timket/Epiphany before that of Genna/Christmas. In our church calendar Genna falls on the 7th of January while Timket falls on the 19th of January (all according to the Gregorian calendar). 3: the way church services are portrayed. The fire breathes and acrobats are inaccurate. Even children stand up and listen to the hymns of the church til the time of kidase/liturgy. This is just speaking from a religious perspective as I am not Ethiopian but a convert to the EOTC.

I know right 😂😂 The scene was very random, I couldn't help it but laugh. A man tossing a professionally created western juggler's item and spitting fire and the like...

The cultural music and the Azmarie business you tried to show has nothing to do with the church ceremony. This is totally false story. The music the dancing around the church, the so-called Deptera, Azmarie has nothing to do with the church and the birth of Jesus It’s an orchestrated a total big fat lie. False documentary

This entire show although entertaining is a parody and misunderstanding of a complex tradition and culture, only good for a western audience and also for those who have very little knowledge of their own culture. The debtera is not a shaman or a practitioner of occult or magical practices as this video suggests. I enjoyed it at a certain level but did not buy into its superficial connotations

Unfortunately that's not a true Christianity, which is preached by the apostles and apostel paul........traditions and cultural practices, man made religious believes and systems has been added to the Church ......which is completely different from the teachings of the Bible .
