*FOOTNOTE* Embabo happened in 1882, not 1884. This error slipped by... sorry about that! Edit: This is really interesting, and I wish i had added this to the video, but contrary to what one might expect, female army leaders and soldiers were actually not at all unheard of in ethiopia during this era (though more the exception than the rule). Interesting stuff. Check out “Women Guerrilla Fighters by Tsehai Berhane Silassie for more information on this subject in specific! I'll be honest, this video was not as polished as I'd've liked it to be. Very busy with other tasks, but I was able to squeeze this out after a few weeks :). Expect another video relatively soon though!
The Gondar King Tewodros II, the Tigrayan king Yohannes IV and the Shewan king Menelik II had to create weapon industry in their capital and other cities and could with this modernize their army and also make the infrastructure of their territory better. They also had to spend more things on education like the Europeans who evolved their army through education.
Do you have any sources pointing to substantial weapons-manufacture in Ethiopia? I couldn't find any when researching this video, but would be more than happy to add details in when I re-adress this subject!
@@hiddenhist yes research a place called Gafat, thats a place in the 19th century where Ethiopians tried to manufactor cannons and for the first time Emperor Theodore II (Tewodros II) used a made in Ethiopia cannon to fight the british it sadly fired 2 times before it collapsed... in Ethiopian history Emperor Tewodros's reign mark the beginning of Modern Ethiopian history.
@@m.s.1779 key word is substantial. I know about gafat, but everything i look into suggests it wasnt a major thing. Were talking one cannon in multiple years. . .

Guns came into use in the 15th /16th century after the War with the Adal (who were backed by the Ottoman Empire) but they were muskets and of low quality
Videos on the medieval horn are certainly of interest to me, but it will probably be a while until I get to that region. As of now, I'm considering moving either west or farther south for my next big set of videos, before returning later.
Ethiopia used chainmail and leather, more light materials cause they live in a climate that can be 30 degrees and on hilly terrain so they needed light defense
Yes, I did skip over a few ranks in this video; I did so because this is, in the end, an overview of a complex subject (If I had enough time, this video would be atleast 20 minutes long so that I can jam in more details). The ranks I skipped over are not as commonly referenced in sources, and therefore won't really be mentioned in the series that this video was made to accompany. As I said when I introduced the ranks at 6:38 , I was discussing the most important ranks; the basic framework of the army, and since I didn't want to over complicate things, I left out more specialized leaders like flank commanders and advanced guard commanders.
