The Kingdom and later Empire of Aksum (also spelled Axum) was one of late antiquity's most influential, wealthiest and powerful states. The Aksumites built incredible monuments, minted their own gold coins, traded with lands as far away as India and China, and were influential in spreading Christianity throughout eastern Africa. They are also arguably the people from whom the inhabitants of modern Ethiopia and Eritrea draw their cultural and religious identity from. Check out the video to see what the Empire of Aksum was and why it's so important to the history of Africa and the world.

I can tell immediately, you did a lot of research on this ancient African empire. Axum was such a powerful Kingdom, that gets hardly mentioned at all. It's going to take Independent historians like yourself to bring these type of civilizations to the for front. Thanks.

The Kingdom of Aksum is notable for a number of achievements, such as its own alphabet, the Ge'ez alphabet. Under Emperor Ezana, Aksum adopted Christianity, which gave rise to the present-day Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church and Eritrean Orthodox Tewahdo Church. wealthy African civilization thrived for centuries, controlling a large territorial state and access to vast trade routes linking the Roman Empire to the Middle East and India. People are really stepping up thier history game. As a kid in the 80s, it was exhausting having to explain being Ethiopian to my American friends/classmates/random annoying people on Holloween when my mom insisted I dress as an Ethiopan princess... yes we do celebrate Christmas, but not like you, a little different, a more ancient version, aha...no my grandmother didn't serve yours... we weren't even here, and so on. All that to say I've seen a lot of progress, it's almost like people are looking for accurate history now. Thanks content creator for your efforts.

@@HistorywithCy My last name is Exum here is some history The name Exum originated in Axum, Ethiopia, and was carried to England by traders called Axumites, was shortened to Axum and was eventually transliterated into Exum. It is a historical rareness where whites got their name from Africa. The first Exum indentured servants arrived in Jamestown, Virginia in 1666. They were eventually forced into slavery and most ended up with white slave owners with the same name. My line, that has it's roots in Edgecombe County, North Carolina, in a round about way, descended from that group. The rest is a muddled history. In my years of research and meeting Exums, I've notice a common resemblance among many us and some character traits. One thing I think might link us Exums by DNA is the prevalence of skin moles, especially on the face and neck. For almost forty years now I've been writing a book about us, but every time I'm about to put down the last period to the last sentence something else comes up and I have to back up and rewrite. One of my more notable relatives is Michael Jordan, whose mother is a descendent of my great uncle Charles, brother of Methuselah, my great grandfather. His brother Dan carried the name to California right after Emancipation. Another went to Texas, one to Tennessee, one to Ohio, and the youngest somewhere out west, maybe, Colorado.

@@HistorywithCy Thank you. My father is stuck in another city, unfortunately. But thanks goodness, he is safe. He is stationed in an hotel alongside other coworkers. We are receaving masks directly from the governament. They are not great, but it's better than having none, I guess. The Pope made a sermon yesterday It was nice of him, I suppose. He blessed the nations of the world, and stated that this benediction is not limited to christians only, but to everyone who is suffering. I do not like how the other European nations are treating us. Even our politicians openly expressed anger on the whole european situation. Our governament is also giving money back to the cities around the country, so that it is given to the families in need. But to be completely blunt. It's not enough. It's like, 34€ or something for family, it's useless. My family is fine. But I know of others who are pretty much screwed. Some people even begun to rob markets to get food. But at least I have hope for our doctors. They are very good, and they are giving their best to help The same goes for our policemen, they are trying to keep tresspassers at bay as much as they can. The governament also gave money to the workers who left their jobs. Wich is good. But they like, gave the same ammount of money bolph to those who worked legaly and those who worked illegaly. And that is not fair I am not against giving money to those who worked illegaly. But those who worked legaly deserve more, by default. I mean. Comeone... You can't reward those who worked hard and payed their taxes, in the same way as those who are literal tax evaders. It's dumb. And some politicians are actualy starting to fear a revolt of the people. That's right. A REVOLT That is how bad their decisions were. Thank goodness, the leader of my region is a competent man and is working hard to fix the situation. But it all depends on the citizens. They are the ones who need to think about their neighbours and keep themselves at bay. In times like these we should think about others, and be less selfcentered. I have heard of people stealing mask supplies from others. And that is just wrong. Again I hope that, werever you live, the situation will never get this bad. I hope you are fine, your family is fine, and everyone you know is fine Sorry if the comment is long.

Yeah I understand... here in the US it also depends on the area. Right now New York City is the worst hit - about 40% of all cases in the US are in the NYC metropolitan area. Other areas are catching up... New Orleans per capita may be even worse in a few weeks - it seems to have spread a lot there after their annual Mardi gras celebration. Oh course the numbers are going up now because we've just started to get more testing kits, though it's still not enough. The good news is that the president here is finally starting to take this whole thing seriously. The bad news of course is that his response is a bit late and he probably could and should have done more a couple of weeks ago. Stay safe my friend! It'll all get better... I know it's bad in Italy but hopefully the worst of it will be over soon. God bless!

Well. The religions of Africa still stand strong. Bolph in the shamanistic faiths of the rural lands of the continent, and also thanks to more organised religions like the beliefs of the Yoruba people. There are also african intellectuals who are openly against the missionaries who are still coming to convert the small comunities, since that would cause the destruction of local cultures and traditions, since they are mostly oral traditions. Now that their belief sistems evolved into coesive powers, they have a stronger chance to fight back and resist.

So basically the came from southern Yemen whom they invaded later. is it true?
@HistorywithCy
@HistorywithCy 4 года назад
Hi, thanks for stopping by and your question. Yeah, I had read something like that, and the early history is murky, but from what understand is that it wasn't Aksum that was founded by Sabeans as much as there was a great Sabean influence in that region. There have been inscriptions in Sabean found in both modern Ethiopia and Eritrea, which were both part of the Aksumite empire, so the influence was definitely there. The relationship with Yemen and the western Arabian coast though was close since the two had been trading with each other for centuries. That's at least what I gather from my studies on the subject. Hope that this helps and if there's anything else that I can do, please let me know. Also, if there's anyone reading this who's really knowledgeable on the subject, please feel free to comment. Your viewers might be interested in knowing that based on my research, much of the Korean vocabulary is based on Akkadian, Ge'ez, Tigrinya and Hebrew along with some words from Gafat. Even the letters of the Korean alphabetic system created in the mid 15th century by King Sejong are probably derived from early Hebrew along with the Sabean script of Ge'ez, based on my own independent research. The first European to give an account of the Korean language, Joseph Hager, noted how the syllabaries of Korean are the same as those found in "Aksumite" and Amharic; yet this topic has been so understudied. Yet, we know that languages such as Tamil and other Dravidian languages have probably been heavily influenced by Ge'ez; and it is also a fact that several important published papers have shown similarities between Dravidian languages and Korean, although it has traditionally been believed that Korean has primarily been influenced by Turkic and Tungusic languages - yet, I believe that Turkic languages have also been influenced heavily by the same Akkadian, Hebrew, and Ge'ez languages, especially as we know from the Bible that the Messianic Jewish communities mentioned in Revelation (for instance Smyrna, where Polycarp was overseer) were residing in western part of modern day Turkey, which was then called "Asia". Speaking of "Asia", it was the Aksumites who coined the name "Hatsia" which means "rulers/kings", because they sent many of their Judaic royalty to parts of Asia. Apparently, when the leaders of Aksum saw how Rome was oppressing and seeking to eradicate Jewish religion in Palestine, they decided to start empires in Southern India, where the ancestors of the Dravidian people such as Tamil-speakers lived - as well as the kingdom of Goguryo. Yes, this is one of those things that almost no history book will mention, but based on my own research, it is very likely that the founders of Goguryo were from Aksum, especially because "Goguryo" is a very frequently used phrase even today among speakers of Tigrinya, who are the heirs of the Aksumite heritage and the ones whose ancestors spoke Ge'ez. "Goguryo" means "Dig it up" or "Look it up"; and it appears to be meant to promote an ethic and governance system based on examination of the scriptures. The name of kingdom that would come to succeed Goguryo, Balhae, is probably derived from the Ge'ez word meaning "enlightened", which is Berhe. There are also many cultural similarities between Tigrayan and traditional Korean culture, many of which persist to this day. Traditionally, the commoners nearly always wore white clothing. The traditional musical styles, are very similar. The mannerisms, standards of respect, bowing culture, and many customs are very similar. I believe even Dangun, who is said to be the founder of ancient Korea, probably had a Danite mother, since Greek "gune" means "wife". During the Assyrian invasions of the 8th century, many of the Danites, along with members of the tribes of Asher, Naphtali, and Gad migrated to what is now Ethiopia, where they joined the descendants of Moses, Levites and those of the tribe of Judah who had already migrated there. I believe there will eventually be found lots of links with the tribes of Levi and Dan in particular in Korean history upon thorough examination. Another interesting factor is that if one views the official map produced in 1402 called Gangnido, it is rather obvious that Lake Tana is drawn disproportionately large while the rest of the continent of Africa pales in comparison. For me, this confirms my belief that many of those who migrated to Korea had come from the region where they spoke Ge'ez, Hebrew, Tigrinya and Gafat, all of which were spoken in ancient Aksum.

Actually it was eritrean and Tigray. It doesn’t apply to the rest of ethiopia. That’s why the kings name was in Tigrinya which is eritrean language and also Tigray’s too.

3:22 Look where the Aksum empire was located it is in modern day Tigray but at the time Tigray and Eritrea were the same people that’s why we have same culture and language. Until the Amharic people came and they took our land with Tigray. So yeah

How is it that there are over 2000 languages in the continent of Africa I tried learning the history it’s intimidating there were to many different groups and events that it was hard keeping up and not knowing the importance of each kingdom would be difficult they need to ask people in Africa the older generations are only going to be around for so long why wouldn’t they ask important questions like who was known for what not all conquerors were the most important or significant and we focus to much on who the winners were we need to focus on who was completely destroyed or wiped out there memory won’t last forever .

@@leykunbirhanu6135Wrong. Adulis the port is in current day Eritrea. Geez is still used in Eritrean Orthodox Church which is the major religion. The official language of Eritrea Tigringya originated from Geez. So saying the kings don’t come from there is false narrative.

Can you please reply to my doubt... why dont we have much info about ancient Aksum as we have of ancient Egypt?
@HistorywithCy
@HistorywithCy 4 года назад
Good question...my opinion is that there is more written history available on ancient Egypt, both from the Egyptians themselves and in Greek and Roman sources... both of those peoples ruled over Egypt for centuries so their histories are somewhat intertwined. That's just my opinion. Thanks so much for stopping by and stay safe!

Actually from the end of the 3rd century AD the kings of Himyar took control of the whole ancient Yemen as shown by their title that became "King of Saba, Dhu Raydan [land of Himyar], Hadramaout (eastern Yemen), and Yamnat". During the 5th century they even added "and the Arabs of Thaoud [today's Najd] and Tihamah", showing that Himyar controlled even central Arabia and the Red Sea shore. So when Kaleb invaded the land of Himyar he took control of this vast land. There are even some inscriptions in today's Saudi Arabia written by Abraha telling he submitted most tribes of Arabia until Iraq

@@salyoutube7023 first of all he(abraha) wasn't under axum he was a rebel and kaleb literally told him he is going to kill him the moment he gets his hands on him second he didn't lose a single war ,according to the quran he was punished by God and some say he and his whole army died because of a plague when he was going to mecca ,only a few arabs tried to stop him and they were defeated easily the rest of the population of mecca fled to the mountains they were simply no match to him Third Ethiopia has never been fully conquered in history especially not by the arabs they are light skinned because they are descendants of pre-arab semites who mixed with hamites of the horn. fourth dhu nawas lost in a single all out battle committed suicide after that plus probably Axum hated Rome , they went as far as conquering southern Egypt to stop them from stretching south to try to control the red sea in the other hand abraha was a fan of Rome and they loved him too but remember he didn't conquer yemen he just took over after axum conquered it he is no more than a rebel

Wheof the Axumite empire is now in independentn the Italians invaded Abyssinia(aka Ethiopia) in 1936 they took one of the Axumite obelisks to Rome -in the same way the ancient Romans had taken Egyptian obelisks to the cities of Rome and Constantinople.The Axumite obelisk was erected next to the Termini main railway station in Rome but I believe the Italians have now returned it (in segments) to Ethiopia as a gesture of good will.Not quite sure where the site has ended up now as I think the centre of Axum is now in Eritrea.

Nah there is a place called axum in ethiopia thats where it was taken from and it's standing there along with other oblisks and they didn't return it as a gesture of good will they were forced to because a lighting hit the oblisk and damaged it forcing them to return it because they weren't capable of protecting it like they claimed they would
