There are plenty of global cuisines that I have not had the pleasure to sample. Ethiopian food has been near the top of the list for awhile. I went to Lucy Ethiopian Restaurant and this video is the result of that journey.
How is Ethiopian cuisine? Watch and you'll find out.

I grew up eating excellent Ethiopian in Washington D.C., but then we moved to Tampa, FL and for years no restaurants. Finally we got some Ethiopian cuisine again. I introduced my hubby to it back in 1996, he fell in love. Real injera is made with teff flour which is super healthy, but lots of restaurants have hard time getting teff. I love the veggie dishes. This is one of the most under appreciated but best tasting cuisines out in the world!

Indians and Ethiopians have a lot In similarities due to our food having similar spices and the food being “ spicy “ for outsiders we do have spicy sauces that you can get with certain foods but you didn’t get any of them in this video so it’s fine . Yes we eat the salad with the Injera as well but if you like you can eat it with a fork. When we’re eating with others on a big plate we eat on whatever side is towards us and everybody can portion whatever amount they want. Yes I’m Ethiopian culture we are taught to only eat with our right hands and leave the left hand for cleaning purposes. Thank you for trying 😅

A lot of research is going on because of its unique health & nutritional value. Bier is already. One very amazing; it fails when try to prepare injera out of Ethiopia😥😥😥

I am Ethiopian and I love seeing people trying Ethiopian food. Sir, yes you are doing well with the size of the injera piece. You also did a great job explaining the different flavours of the plater. I love what you said about the flavour is awakened every time you try a different one, as my partner is Canadian who absolutely love my cooking, he always says there is a party in your mouth when you eat Ethiopian food 😅 I love Indian food as well but we do use similar spices but different combinations that make it taste different. We have a very slight similarities I will say but, definitely not the same because of how we combine our spices but mostly the same spices. We also have our number one ingredient in every spicy Ethiopia dishes that is called Berbere which is hot chilli pepper powder that contains over 12 different spices in it that is only found in Ethiopian dishes. You can add Berbere virtually in everything you cook and you will never be disappointed. In regards to which hand to use in our culture we only use our right hand to eat because our left hand is used to clean not so pleasant things even though you wash it thoroughly, You simply don’t use the same hand for both ends if you know what I mean lol 😅 Kudos to you go out your comfort zone and try different food from every culture enjoy life!

This is calm and nice to watch; lovely seeing someone who is new or neutral to the whole "injera & wot" cuisine and how its approached from the words to describe taste and flavours. All legit questions were asked and good assumptions were made here. The piece you showed is a good portion for one gursha/bite. The yellow saus was a split pea saus. I think its easier to eat the salade with fork for many reasons. A one bite/scope can be rolled or folded to cover all the scooped item in it like gift wrapping for a swift bite... so that nothing lingers around your lips when feeding yourself or someone else (giving a gursha). You can have a bit bigger piece to scope two saus. About the butter, in Ethiopia butter is made from raw milk and processing it for food means that it gets clarified with some spices and dried herbs on a heat until its cooked. Then setteled and filterd and stored in a dark cold place if there is no refrigerator. Maybe it's like the indian ghee). In short about injera: normally made of just only with Teff flour and leftover batch yeasting batter fermented for few days before baked on a clay round plate. The honeycomb cells on it are to suck-up and grip the sauses/ wot.

that is one out of mass. You saw one of many! Taste the others and make sure. In practice, prove that "in wisdom, in faith, in culture, in heritage, in geography, in its alphabet, and in history Ethiopia is different from the world, and its people are like leopards; and its works are wonderful."

Liked the video. The salad is served on the same plate normally. They separate it for to-go orders because it will wilt. Ethiopian cheese(ricotta like) is missing on your plate. Never seen kitfo served without it before. Mixing each bite produces an endless amount of flavor. The issue with the hands is out of tradition, but has two practical purposes. 1. When you eat in a round table and share foods, your hands will not collide. (My brother used to sometimes use his left hand and our hands would collide.) 2. Some cultures use the left hand in the rest room. That is the main reason for the rule. Also, once people wash their hands they close the right hand and only use the left for opening doors, etc. until they get to the table. Left hand can be used to tear injera at times, but each person has their own roll.
@HanniZenu
@HanniZenu Год назад
Great video and yes, it’s the right size. You’re also very considerate in thinking that because it’s a shared platter/meal, you’re supposed to be mindful in how you use your fingers and the enjera. When eating with others..you ought not to overreach everywhere and use etiquette so as to not turn off others that are sharing the meal with you. By the way, if you don’t want the enjera to give you a very stuffed feeling when you’re done eating, ask for a ‘pure teff’ enjera. It’s the real deal free of any mixing with other forms of flour. It might cost more but worth it bc it’s organic, gluten free, tasty and much healthier. Thanks again for sharing your experience.

First you wash your hand and mouth very clearly (No need to pick a lot because of the dirty fingers. The dirty fingers must be washed before start eating) 2. Gather with people and wait for everyone to come around 3. Start eating 4. Enjoy P.S. Usually It is recommended to eat with your right hand Great work my friend. Thumbs up

@Very Nice. Yes, your cut of the injera pieces is a tad/bit too big for an Ethiopian. Start with smaller cuts of injera & gradually determine the size of injera piece you are comfortable with. Also, in take-out containers, the lid of the container is used as "an extra plate" on which to put the spare injera rolls provided. All in all, it looks fantastic & appetizing.

You're right about trying to keep your hands less messy because you're sharing, but as long as you've washed them before and don't lick them, don't worry about getting some of the stuff on you! And there isn't a perfect size of injera to use. It's just supposed to be a vessel for the different items on the plate, so you don't want to tear off so much that the injera flavor is standing out.

From what I see the main dish in your case is the beef/chicken. However, all other ones are side dish and yes the salad also to be eaten with injera.

Tip; if You combine from the different foods when you take a bite, you will get more burst of flavors. In fact, if you use the Injera at the bottom, soaked with all the flavors , it will give you amazing sensation.
