Speaker 1: Today we're going to be looking at the best wiring options for our 2017 Hyundai Tucson. Here we have our wiring from CURT and here we have our wiring from Tekonsha. They're both going to perform similar functions for your vehicle, and for the most part they're very similar, but there are a few differences between them.The biggest differences between these two harnesses are going to be how it's installed and where your four-pole connector's going to be located. With your Tekonsha it's going to live inside the vehicle, so when you need to use it you'll have to pull it out from your storage compartment, drape it over the back, hook it up to your trailer. When you shut it, you do want to make sure you don't come into contact with the latch here. Otherwise, it's okay.
It's not going to be damaged if it gets squished between your weather stripping.This is nice because when you're not using it, it's going to keep it out of the elements and prevent any corrosion occurring on your connections. A drawback is that you are going to have to open up the vehicle and drape it out the back, so it may hinder the length of wire that you have available to hook up to your trailer, location you can use it, and it's a little bit more work because it's not right there ready to hook up.With our CURT, it's going to live outside the vehicle, so it's going to be located right here behind your bumper. This way it's always ready to use. Since it comes with a dust cap, it will keep out some of that moisture and corrosion. When you're done with it, you can just store it up underneath your bumper or you can attach it to your hitch.The main advantage of it being outside is that it's easily accessible and ready to go whenever you are.
You don't have to fiddle with storing it, wrapping it back up, and it being in the way inside your storage compartment. A drawback is that it is exposed to the elements. Even though it does have a dust cap, if you forget to put it on it may introduce some moisture and corrosion in there, and dirt can make it more difficult to plug in or potentially cause a circuit issue.Along with that, the control unit for your Tekonsha is going to also live inside the vehicle, so it will be protected from the elements, whereas your CURT is going to be exposed to the elements. Now CURT did recently upgrade their boxes so they feature the potting material that's located on your Tekonsha as well. This helps keep out any moisture, corrosion, and prevents vibration from damaging the components on the inside.Now that we've covered some of the advantages of the location that the connectors and boxes will be stored, one of the drawbacks on the Tekonsha is how much more difficult that installation's going to be.
You're going to have to disassemble quite a few components on the inside in order to get that box to live in there. Our CURT's going to be a lot faster and easier since all that has to happen is the taillights have to be removed.The rest of the installation process for them are going to be about the same. You're going to have a power wire that's going to need to be run to the front. This is kind of a good thing because it's going to ensure that you have a separate power supply for your boxes so it'll keep your circuits completely separate from your vehicle. You're just tapping into them to receive a signal, and the rest of it's happening from your control box.
If you do have a fault with your trailer, you don't have to worry about it affecting your vehicle. It's going to happen within your control box and its inline fuse.Now the only other major difference between the two is that our CURT's going to have slightly higher amperage ratings. What this means is that you're going to be able to have a few more lights on your trailer without worrying about an overload.In summary, when it comes to installation I'm going to have to give that to the CURT 'cause it is going to install a lot quicker without having to remove so many components on the inside. When it comes to power output, I'm also going to have to give that to the CURT 'cause it does give you almost an amp more of output on both your taillight and brake lamp circuits.
