Hey, everybody, Ryan here at etrailer. Today we're gonna be checking out the Curt Echo in-line wireless trailer brake controller. Whenever you plan on pulling a trailer that has brakes, you're gonna need a way to apply 'em, you know That way you can slow down everything as a whole unit and not just rely on your vehicle to do all the braking. And so, when that situation occurs, that's where a brake controller, like the Curt one here, is gonna come into play. So the way it's gonna work, whenever you hit the brakes in your vehicle, it's gonna send a signal back and apply the brakes on your trailer helping to bring you to that safe and controlled stop. There are a ton of different brake controllers available, and this particular one's really unique, I think it's pretty cool and, personally, I've yet to see one similar to it.
But the way it's gonna work is it's going to, essentially, just tee into your factory 7-way, so if your vehicle has a factory 7-way like this one, everything should work out. It's gonna plug into the back of it and then plug directly into the brake controller, which stays mounted underneath the vehicle here, and then everything else is done using Bluetooth, so with your phone or your mobile device, and it's super cool, you know It literally takes no time to set up. Curt does have one kind of similar, if you will, in a sense, it's a Curt Echo, and it actually plugs in to the 7-way here, and then you would plug your trailer cable into it and it works wirelessly as well. And that one's really cool, we've had a lot of good luck with it, it seems like a lot of people like it. But, you know, the thing is with that, you're gonna be able to pull it out and keep it in your, you know, your glove box or whatever, this one stays permanently attached.
So if you do a lot more towing, this is probably a better option for you because you're not gonna have to deal with that every time, or if you just don't really like the thought of having, you know, one extra thing, or link if you will, in between your trailer connector and your towing vehicle. I do just wanna touch base real quick on what this is gonna be compatible with, and as long as your vehicle has the 7-way type connector, chances are really, really good this is gonna work. So it'll work with the USCAR style connector, which is just the standard round one, it's really common, rarely do you come across other types of 'em, you know So if you have a factory one, you'll be in really good shape, like ours here today has a factory connector but no brake controller, so we we're able to plug right into that and now we're squared away. If you happen to have an aftermarket type 7-way connector, so, a lot of vehicles, especially late model ones, will have just a connector plug in the back somewhere where the factory ran those wires but don't actually give you a trailer connector, well there's kits that you can plug right into those and end up with a 7-way. And as far as it working with those, I don't see any reason why it wouldn't, as long as you're getting, you know, all your signals back here to your 7-way, this should be able to tee right in and work how it's designed to.
I talked about this thing being wireless and just figured we show you how it works. So, one of the really cool things that being wireless, at least in my opinion, is now, on these late model cars, there's a lot of stuff going on the dashboard, you know, you got screens, and buttons, and all this stuff everywhere and you really don't want to have to drill into your dash and mount up a traditional style brake controller, or at least I don't, you know And so something like this, you know, is really beneficial to be able to use to avoid having to drill into the dash. And so the way this is gonna work, once you're all set up and everything back there, and hooked up to your trailer, you're gonna download an app onto your mobile device, I'm using this tablet here, the majority of you are probably gonna use your cell phone, right 'Cause that's always gonna be in your pocket, but I just grab this, that way it's a little bit bigger, kind of see a little bit better and what's going on with it but, again, it'll connect with all those late model mobile devices, you know, all the typical stuff out there. From there, it's really straightforward, you know You can make your adjustments and everything else like that, and do a whole bunch of different things. Once you download that app, you'll connect to your brake controller using Bluetooth, and it's just like anything else, I feel like the majority of us have probably gone through that.
It prompts you to

Good morning guys and thank you for these extremely helpful videos! I just have one question but let me give you a little backstory first so you have the whole picture… My girlfriend bought a camper that has a 7 prong plug. She hired uhaul to run her trailer wiring but they ran a 4 prong instead of a 7 prong.. luckily when we picked the camper up from the dealer they were able to sell us the 4 to 7 prong adapter so we could at least get the camper home that day. When we got the trailer home I was able to route the 4 prong plug down through the frame of her car and into the mounted 7 prong adapter. Trailer lights work and everything’s good! Job complete for Jesse.. Then she buys your Bluetooth brake controller….. My questions are 1- Does the brake controller require 12vdc from the battery to work? I believe it does but I’m having trouble finding it online. 2. If the trailer requires 12vdc can I just run wires from the positive and negative on the cars battery right to the 4-7 prong adapter(as long as I land the battery wires onto the correct adapter wires)? 3- If this is the correct way to wire it then does the positive wire going from cars battery to the trailer adapter need to be fused? And if so what size fuse?? Thank you for taking the time to read all of that and I hope you get back to me asap! My girlfriend has 4 hours of trailer driving experience and leaves to travel literally across the country with the camper this weekend….. so if I can get some brakes hooked up for her we would both feel much better. Thankyou guys!

1. Yes it needs 12v. The trailer brakes will not work without them nor will the controller. The trailer brakes are not powered through the brake light line. 2. You only need a 12v +. You ground to the vehicle frame or body, not the vehicle battery negative. There are kits for this on eTrailer. Yes the + from the battery needs to be fused, 40A. Because you went from a 4 to a 7, my opinion is her buying the Curt in line wireless brake controller actually created more work for you. The easiest and more efficient method would have been to upgrade the 4 pin to 7 pin using the eTrailer ETBC7 kit which includes everything you need, and buying the Curt 51180 controller which plugs into the 7 way outside and then your trailer to the controller directly. Hope that helps.

So if you close the app will they still function? Assuming they will as if the phone died etc... The only reason to have the app up is to adjust if needed and to have the manual stopping???

Also! Do you need to still get relays or fuses?

If your phone shuts down or loses connection, the Echo Brake Controller will function at its last known setting. You won't be able to activate the manual braking or adjust anything if the bluetooth connection is lost. As long as the vehicle is equipped with a 7-way trailer connector with an active 12-V pin in the 1:00 position, the controller will work just fine for you. www.etrailer.com/Trailer-Brake-Controller/CURT/C51180.html
