Hi everyone, it's Evangeline here at etrailer. Today, we have the Thule TracRac TracONE ladder rack. This is going to be a fixed height ladder rack, and we're gonna take a look at how it fits, and I'll also show you how to get this installed on your 2024 Ram 1500. If you are looking for a very high weight capacity, but also simple to install ladder rack, that's where the Thule TracONE is really popular. I see this a lot on the highway, carrying ladders and lumber. Basically longer items where the height giving you clearance over the cab comes in handy.
Now this is gonna be a fixed height tower, which means that you are fixed to a certain point. So the downside to that too is for some people, it may be too high for certain applications. Here on the Ram 1500, the tower post height of your ladder rack is gonna be 26 inches and a quarter of an inch. So measuring for over the cab clearance, you have it at 5 1/2 inches of height. That measurement will help you figure out how much clearance you have for items that you are carrying on your ladder rack.
Also, a lot of accessories give you some extra height too. So the way your accessories clamp is you have two options. With this being a very large bar, you can get things that clamp around. Double check the measurements on our site to make sure that your clamps match. You also have the option of securing into these channels up top, so your T-track mounted accessories will fit in right here.
For those accessories and that cargo, you have an 800-pound weight capacity, which is pretty impressive and is on the higher end for ladder racks that are available for your Ram 1500. You get that high weight capacity because of its fixed height as well as the construction of the ladder rack. Most of what you see is gonna be made of aluminum from the bars to the towers to the bases. You also have a black powder coat finish as well as an e-coat to help prevent scratches from the cargo that you are carrying. Now when you are installing it though, you do have to be very mindful of installing it properly just because of that high weight capacity.
You wanna make sure you have enough support. So all in all with the Thule TracONE, this is gonna be great for high weight capacity as well as high clearance. For some people, they think it's a little too tall. Sitting over the cab, it kind of looks like crossbars on the cab when you're on the highway, and some prefer a more custom fit, which you will find with the Yakima OverHaul HD ladder rack instead. That one will not give you the same weight capacity that the Thule TracONE will though. So it does depend on what you're carrying and what you're looking for. So I mentioned the installation process. Let's go take a look at that to see if this is the right fit for you and what you want to do with your ladder rack. For installation, all of your hardware and pieces are going to be included. What's not included though is the tools to secure it. So at the very minimum, you're gonna need some Allen keys, specifically a 7/32" Allen key and a 3/16". Now because you need a very high torque though, I do highly recommend using a torque wrench as well as the socket bits of those sizes just to get that proper tightness for that high weight capacity of this ladder rack. What I like to do is start with getting the crossbars attached to the ladder rack before I even put it on the truck. So we're gonna start by loosening the bolts and the crossbar using our smaller Allen key. (torque wrench clicking) Once that bolt is loose, you can then remove the end caps. Do this for both sides. Now being mindful of the orientation of your towers, figuring out which side's drivers and passenger side, a good tidbit is you want the towers facing the outside of the ladder, and then the longer bracket facing the inside of your truck bed. Now that you know which side goes where, you can then slide the appropriate base into the crossbar. Keeping your channel nuts loose will allow you to slide the nut through the track of the bar. You don't have to worry about the positioning yet of the towers. We're gonna tighten them down later. This is also a good time to put your load stops on the top channels. We're not gonna do those today since we're gonna have a different use for the top channels later on today. So we're gonna go ahead and put the end caps on and secure them again with the bolts we took out. (torque wrench clicking) Now I already have my shim set up on the side of the truck bed rails. So now we're just going to gently s
