You want the grease to come out the bottom when repacking bearings. Doing this will push the old grease out of the bearing and allow for proper lubrication. We use this bearing packer all the time in our shop. www.etrailer.com/Tools/Performance-Tool/PTW1218.html
So that handy little tool is really fine and dandy and all that, and I like this one better than the other common bearing grease packer tool thingy, but, I mean, the hand packing method is just so simple. And easy. And if you wear rubber gloves it's actually less messy and less cleanup. Not to mention cheaper. AND it's faster. Hand pack your bearings, boys and girls, it's a piece of cake!
Forces the old grease out??? Why would you repack a bearing that hasn't been completely cleaned, dried and inspected? These are almost useful if you pack a lot of bearings in your shop each day, but then you would use a good pump driven one. I have used both but, for my own work in the shop, it's not frequent enough anymore to stop hand packing them. Hand packing is faster, more consistent and gets a more even pack than these cheap packers.
Probably should have mentioned that it’s not good to mix grease types. If the bearings are new then no problem BUT if you’re reusing your bearings mixing grease types can cause problems. Rather than trying to push out the old grease, completely remove and clean the old grease. Remember to make a note on the type of bearing grease you used.
We have several options that will work great for you. Check them out in the following link. www.etrailer.com/dept-pg-Tools-sz-Grease_Gun.aspx www.etrailer.com/Tools/Performance-Tool/PTW1218.html
We have had very good luck with this bearing packer and have had reviews of people really liking it. I would say it does a really good job of getting grease in a majority of the spots and the few that it doesn't can be packed with your hands. www.etrailer.com/Tools/Performance-Tool/PTW1218.html
Waste £10-£20 on this "special" tool or you can do it the old fashioned method. Put a load of grease in your palm and rub the bearing in the palm of your hand and when it comes out the rollers all around, it's ready.
@@lengerer Yup, and you don't need a grease gun. :-) If I had this tool, I'd use it so rarely it'd take me an hour or two to dig it out of my tool box.
You guys are morons. The "Sepcial tool" is $7 on amazon, it lasts you a life time and if you don't already have such a basic tool as a grease gun, I really don't think you should be doing this job in the first place. It doesn't waste any grease, the grease the comes out can be used to pack the hub. Don't "force old grease out" clean the bearing in some gas properly then blow it out with air, brake clean, air and repack. This tool is great, gets a way better pack than your hand can give you, its fast as hell, easy..
