Rob: Rob here, at etrailer.com, and today you're going to be taking a look at the PTC custom fit charcoal cabin air filter on our 2019 Buick Encore. Now a lot of people don't even realize that their vehicles have a cabin filter, but most new vehicles on the road have one. And what they're going to do is they're going to filter all the air coming into our vehicle, making sure it cleans everything out, all the exhaust fumes, debris on the road, or anything else, and it's going to filter it before it comes through our vents. And again, a lot of people don't even realize they have them, so they do get forgotten about. The manufacturer does recommend that you change, if not check it, at least once a year or every 12,000 miles. Now you do want to double check your owner's manual for a specific time. But if you think about it, our cabin filter's going to do the same thing for your car what a furnace filter does for your house.
To make sure all the air that we're breathing in is nice and clean, because if you think about it, the air inside your car can actually be up to eight times more polluted than the air outside. Because once it's in here, it doesn't have anywhere to go.So if there are any pollutants, it's going to be trapped in here, which can be a big problem for people that had breathing issues like asthma or anything else. And the charcoal design is going to be really good for trapping those really small particles, as well as odors from smoke, pets, or even just exhaust fumes from the outside. But changing it is going to be an extremely easy thing. There's no need to pay anybody in the service center to do a job that you can do in your garage and save yourself a few dollars. In fact, it's so easy, let's go ahead and do it together.
And if we need to change ours, we can, but if not, we can show you how to check it. We'll start out on the passenger side. We want to open up our glove box. Now if we look to the very outside on the passenger side by the door, we're going to have this little arm here and that's actually the shock that prevents the glove box from coming down too far. So we just want to grab the rod on the end.
If you put your thumb behind it, and push towards the outside, should pop off, and we'll be able to move it out of the way. And I want to grab the inner piece of our glove box here just ever so slightly kind of press in, that'll bend it in a little bit, so we can get past the stops. We'll just let our glove box rotate down. Now if we look inside here we'll have this rectangle piece and on each end we're going to have a tab. We'll squeeze in on those tabs, and you want to lift up. The door's not going to fully come off.
It's just going to open up like that. We can reach in and grab our cabin filter, and we can pull it out. And one thing I do want to mention is right here where it's labeled, it is going to have an arrow and that's going to be the direction of airflow, just like the furnace filter in your house. So you want to make sure you put it in the appropriate way.As you can see it, it's trapping a little bit of debris. It's really not all that dirty. You can see on the inside it is getting some, but I wouldn't change it just yet. There's still plenty of life left in this filter. But replacing is going to be just as easy as checking it. So you just slide your new filter in and close the door up. Our factory filter is a little bit dirty. You can see the difference between the new one and the old one, but there's still plenty of life left. With them next to each other, you can see that we're still getting the benefit of the charcoal from the new filter, just like we did with the original one, and it is going to be the same shape and general design of it. So it is going to be a great replacement item so we're not going to have to go to the dealer and spend a ton of money to get a filter for the inside of our Buick. But since it's not that dirty, I'll go ahead and put it back in, making sure the arrow is pointing the correct direction. Just slide it in, close the door, and make sure it latches.I'm going to rotate the glove box back up to where the stops are going to lock back into place, and then make sure to put the dampener back on that rod before we close it up. Getting the rod back on can be a little bit difficult, but if we take a pen, screwdriver, or anything really small and push on the bottom section, it'll slide right back in. But now that you've seen how to change it, you can have the confidence to go out in your driveway and check if it needs to be done. At a bare minimum, you do want to check it because if the filter does get cl
