I'm so happy that there are people in the world that find a very specific thing they love, because it helps others for when they need to search for something very specific. Thank you, this is great. This short vid will get me on my way instead of spending a day learning it. All I need is the points. Thanks :)

Hi, Firstly, thanks for this informative video. I'm planning to go on a trekk of approximately 28km. Now the etrex-10 specification says it can store 1000 waypoints & 50 routes. So, if I turn-ON the auto track-recording at an interval of 0.01Km, will this device be able to record the complete track of 28km, or it will fail due to its restriction of limited storage capacity? I'm not sure, but in the auto track-recording mode, with the interval set as 0.01Km, will it use one of its 1000 waypoints at an interval of every 0.01Km & will run-out after recording (1000*0.01)=10Km?

Hi Sourav, you will not run out of internal storage capacity as the is 17 miles. A good habit before you start your journey is to always clear your track, that way you do not have any previous tracks. The internal storage is on 6mb. What I would suggest is upgrade to a Etrex 2x. The screen is color and you can add maps via an SD card and also your internal memory is 8GB, that is a substantial difference from the Etrex 10. The models with an 'x' are touch screen and alot more user friendly and they have more features that may be of use to you. I hope this helps.

@@outdoorrecreationusinggps Hi, your reply helps a lot. But then too, it would be of great help if there was any way to understand if the auto-recording of any track depends on the specified way-points of the device. Like how the auto recording of track actually works. Whether it takes the 1000 way-points in consideration or not etc... Is there any way I can dig into those technicalities a bit?

@@Sourav_Sadhukhan Unfortunately I could not find information to answer your question. It has been asked before and i have contacted Garmin and they could not answer the question either....sorry. If I do find the info, I will post it.

@@Sourav_Sadhukhan I think I can get you closer to what you are looking for. The Etrex 10 has the ability to store 10,000 track points or 100 tracks. The recording interval can be set to auto, distance or time. I have always suggested auto. Once you set the recording method, then look at Interval. Basically if you choose Most Often you will fill up your memory quicker. If you go into the Owner's Manual and go to Recording Track Logs it will give you more information. Hope this gets you close to what you are looking for.

@@outdoorrecreationusinggps Just got an idea. This surely can be tested practically, if we can turn-ON the track recording feature with the parameter set as 0.01Km for distance & move the device for a little bit more than 10km. If the feature actually depends on it's 1000 available way-points, then it should stop recording the track right after crossing 10km, that is after exhausting its 1000 in-built way-points. But unfortunately I don't have the device yet. Hence can't do the test. :(

I'm thinking about buying 1 but I don't need a computer to download longitude and latitude do I? Because I'm planning to stay out for about 2 months and I will have zero access to a computer a phone or any service so I need it to be able to put longitude and latitude on the fly

Once you purchase a handheld gps, you only need the computer to ensure the software is updated (usually once a quarter do a check). These devices use satellites to determine you location - long and lat.

So far so good. The biggest problem for me is that if you have 100 waypoints at the end of the day, how do you enter all this information in the route planner ? It will take a long time to enter 100 waypoints !!
@outdoorrecreationusinggps
@outdoorrecreationusinggps 3 года назад
Lucien - go to Garmin.com, search for 'basecamp' and install it on your computer. Then use the data cord that came with the gps and connect it to your computer. Launch Basecamp and you can enter waypoints in Basecamp and they will be saved on your GPS. Let me know if you need more assistance - glad to help out

Thanks for your comments. The problem is that I created the waypoints when I was in the forest. In the forest I have no access to a computer. When I try to go back home, it is a pain to enter 100 waypoints that I have created the same day in the forest. Any other solutions ? Thanks. :)

@@lucienr Question - when you are in the forest - are you marking the waypoints on your GPS? Or are you writing them down and then you enter them when you get home?

@@lucienr this is exactly what I am trying to learn..Garmin is useless..no one has clearly taught this yet....do you use tracks ,route or way points or can you turn way points into a saved track ..its so confusing and no one has explained it.

Hi guys Can I record as I hike and then ask the gps to return to the start point ?
@outdoorrecreationusinggps
@outdoorrecreationusinggps 4 года назад
Yes, all GPS's have a tracking feature. As long as the GPS is on its tracking you where ever you go. So, for example you are at a trail heat, you then go into your Track Manager and clear your track. This will clear all previous tracks up to the point you clear it. Now when you proceed to hike, it creates a new track - the one you are on. If you get to a point you want to return, then go to your Track Manager, then Current Track, click map or view on map and the near the bottom it will say Tracback. A map will appear and show your complete track, now you follow the track (purple line) back to your destination. As you follow the track back, the blue triangle shows where you are in relationship to the track. So, if you stray from the line, you will see it on the screen. When you finally reach your destination, you can save this track for later. Hope this helps - stay safe.

@outdoorrecreationusinggps

@@drbrighton6539 I would suggest starting with an Etrex 20 or 30, 22x or 32x and the primary reasons would be, the screen is color and it has a slot for a micro SD card so you can add maps to your device.

@outdoorrecreationusinggps
@outdoorrecreationusinggps 4 года назад
Zee, have you watched the video - Etrex 10 Creating a Route? Instead of using waypoints you are going to use the map. Move the map around with the toggle button. Once you have determined the first point, then press enter. Now the first map point has been selected, then hit the back button and you will be prompted to enter the next point. Once you have selected all the points, hit the back button and your route will be created. The default name is Route 001 - you can change this to something more recognizable. Hope this helps...

How to calculate area with this in acres
@outdoorrecreationusinggps
@outdoorrecreationusinggps 4 года назад
Go into your settings and look for Units, then go into Distance/Speed and see if acre is available to choose from. If not, you may need to calculate based on yards or meters.

I have used earlier etrec GPS for years up in Northern Canadian Rivers (Back/Dubwant/Kazan/Thlewiaza etc) as a supplement for my 4 dollar Silva compass. The etrec10 is such a dismal Rube Goldberg machine, that I would pack it away and forget it.

Hi Todd - when you select the Route Planner and you come to the screen 'Create Route' and the press enter you are presented with 4 options - Use Map, Recent Finds, Waypoints and Cities. For example, if you use 'Use Map', you will use your toggle and the panning buttons to find the point on the map. Then you will press enter and then hit the back button. The screen will ask you for your second point and so on and so forth. Hope this helps...
