Excellent. clear concise and to the point. trust a Brit to not mess about and get right to the point and no stupid adverts on the screen. Thanks, i got exactly what i needed from this. There are alot of so called RU-vidrs' that could learn from this guy. Thanks again.

This guy is indeed so talented in his presentation. If only all teachers and lecturers were like this. Thank God he didn't film this in vertical like so many of these pea-brained millennial nerds are doing here on RU-vid. We, those with a brain, should be downvoting and not watching anything filmed in vertical. I routinely downvote anything filmed in vertical, leave a derogatory comment, skip it and request no more recommendations from the channel. "Say no to vertical video and ban it from RU-vid!" Back to topic: The Etrex is a superb device and no serious outdoor person should be without one.

Excellent primer on using these things. One of the best I've seen. Clear and concise. Only improvement might be screenshot pop ups of GPS on the side as you are explaining things. I remember being blown away at what GPS tech can do years ago. It was a Magellan 2000 that could barely get a sat lock. I did as you said, dropped a waypoint in Google Earth and saw the spot I'd marked. I always have a compass when out, but now a Garmin of some sort is always my main nav tool.

Thanks from someone who is old school and not tech savvy but getting a bit of a hold on it now. People should understand that no matter who and what we are and what age we are, we are all beginners on different subjects and always will be. We come here to learn and so should be taken as novices. I certainly am. Thanks for the simple language.

Excellent video. You are a very natural and effective teacher. I would like to point out a common misconception that is related in the video at 3:25. A GPS receiver does not get azimuth (direction) information from a satellite. It only gets one thing: it's distance from the satellite. Given distance from a single satellite, all we can deduce is that we're somewhere on a sphere around that satellite. With distance from a second satellite, we know we're somewhere on the circle that forms the intersection of two spheres. With a third satellite (and sphere) we know we're at one of only two points where the three spheres intersect, and only one of those two points will be on the surface of the earth (which forms a fourth sphere).

Most people simply call it GPS (Global Positioning System) As an airline guy we often fly "GPS" approaches. Kind of like heading to your CB1, but with an alignment to a runway with multiple waypoints along the way, and also most can calculate a "descent" profile typically a 3 agree slope. This gentleman has a great presentation style, and is obviously an excellent teacher.

It needs to connect to at least 4 satellites (last is for time reference) and I'm pretty sure the GPS in the video don't necessarily use 12, but can connect to a maximum of 12 (which would improve accuracy).

GPS pioneer Dr. Neil Ashby (ref. Univ of Colo and NIST Research Director states that the GPS system determinations must be corrected by both general and special relativistic calculations and the requirement is that FOUR satellites anr needed for minimal accuracy for any waypoint location. He says this is caused by the enormous distances involved in the process. Not only is the range of each satellite measured along the transmission path of its signals, enormous, but so is the separation distance between the participating satellites. Happily, these corrections are now built into modern GPS receivers.

..anyone that's used a Garmin 600 or 700 series knows why cell phones don't cut it for remote navigation..if you're hiking, driving, whatever in the city or outskirts, fine...I have Verizon which is currently the best service for coverage area here in Arizona and the gps in my S7 often fails where I am trekking/camping/4 wheeling in the mountains, while the Garmin is not only having no problems but is often accurate to within 10 feet...cell phones don't have access to the Russian GLONASS system of satellites which give you incredible precision w/your device...

I was given a Garmin etrex 10 many years ago and i periodically take it out, frustratedly look at videos, realise that i cannot get it to do what i need it wo do, and return it to its box. All i want to do is to enter some coordinates from a walking book to follow a trail. Unfortunately, all the videos i have seen including this one seem to assume that i want to take coordinates (and create a route) based on where i currently am, rather than entering coordinates (and creating a route) in advance, driving to start and letting the device show me where to go . It does seem to be the most unintuitive device i have ever owned, but i would be really grateful if someone could please point me the way.

Well, so it shows you the way in a straight line, but it doesn't account for any obstacles in the field. So, in the case of the mountain rescue team, how can they say "We'll be there in x minutes" when they don't know what's in the field. If they come across some major obstacle or some sort of precipice if they are in a mountain area, what then? Otherwise, I like the video, it's well explained.
