Etsy is speaking out of both sides of their mouth. They officially announce that using AI in product creation is allowed, yet they removed my Star Seller badge and threatened to close my account because I’m using AI for my product creation. Their automated bots are flagging my legitimate custom designs as commercial products I’m reselling. It’s been two months and no one from Etsy has even replied to my tickets requesting to resolve this issue. This is how Etsy is treating their sellers, and it’s incredibly frustrating. If Etsy continues to alienate their sellers like this, they are going to put themselves out of business.😔

Once I heard that notating your listing that was made using AI was a requirement, I added a note line at the bottom of my description stating, “This design was made in part using AI”. That way I feel that I’m covered and doing what was asked of us by Etsy, since there isn’t currently a “Check” option or them clarifying exactly what we’re supposed to be stating.

Now when you list it does ask you if you made it by AI and this is required. You cannot state you made it yourself. You have to state it is made by AI.

The prompt bundles are still up for sale. I asked about it to their AI bot customer service, which is a joke, and still no response 2 weeks later. Tragic service!

Worth noting Canva requires you to disclose the design is AI if generated by them

Those prompt bundles that have flooded Etsy are not guaranteed to be tested before selling. Who knows if the sellers just asked ChatGPT to spit out 1,000 10,000 prompts, then bundled them and made Etsy listings without testing whether they can generate quality images. On the other hand, images generated with AI tools still need a touch-up and sometimes require a lot of work to make them saleable. Buyers can see the images and know what to expect before buying, unlike with prompts. Often, we can't get a perfect image from AI tools in one go if we aren't good at prompting. Crafting AI prompts requires skill too. Trash input = trash output still applies even with AI tools. So, I kinda understand Etsy's stance on this. By the way, I'm not selling AI images. I'm bad at prompting and just buy images for my assets, regardless of whether they are hand-drawn, digitally-drawn, or generated with AI. The most important thing is that they are beautiful.

I wonder how this works for people selling single image prompts and then including a bunch of example images they got from the prompt. There are WHOLE stores doing this and making bank (and thus making Etsy bank)

Using an AI image generator is not essentially different from using clip art. I’m not happy that one has to be disclosed but not the other.

@@1StopToyShop why would that make a difference? We’re talking about how much creative effort the seller put in. I’ve done both. Using clip art or designing with an AI tool. As of right now, AI takes more effort although that may change. In either case, you’re not hand drawing. In both cases you still need to put in significant creative and crafting effort. So why would one require disclosure but not the other? Edit: Some people think AI somehow magically does all your work. It usually takes me several days to make a modest clip art bundle starting with generative AI. And sometimes, after all that I’m not satisfied with the results and I junk it.

@@1StopToyShop That isn't the question though. The seller didn't create the clip art, that's the point. As much as they didn't make the design with AI. Moreover, with AI, the seller was more creative than the act of buying a design is

AI is a tool, I don't have time to use a paint brush to paint my design on a canvas and then use a picture taking tool to record it for my computing tool so that I can send it on the communication tool to a company that can use their tools to put it on a piece of textile that another company used their tools to produce. Selling AI prompts is the same as using all the design clipart that I have to pay for...

Three questions. 1.) How would Etsy know (and prove) that part of your POD design included AI generated elements? It seems unprovable without the print file that is only provided to the production partner, not Etsy. I know there are things that have an "A.I. look" but there are images that I would swear are photos and you would have to have the print file to prove AI creation. Then if you use graphic elements for vector designs, can Etsy say "we know you created the puppy but the little flower next to him was AI generated." Unlikely to impossible. 2.) Do buyers care? I can't imagine a buyer saying "I was so happy to get my mug until I hyper analyzed the design and seen a hint of A.I." I don't think the vast majority of buyers have standards that high for POD products. 3.) Is this Etsy virtue signaling to the handmade sellers buy writing a policy that is largely unprovable (thus unenforceable) in hopes that people will just stop talking about it and move on to the next Etsy self-inflicted drama?

Etsy can't prove that everything listed as handmade is 100% handmade by people either... there's a bit of an honor system involved for sure...but that doesn't mean we shouldn't follow the rules 😉

Mmmm, even with this clarification, this is kind of hard for me. I produce references with AI instead of using paid libraries, but the designs I make myself. Does it count as made with assistance of AI. The asset I make are impossible to do with AI. With any other reference pictures, we don't really disclose our references... "I used an atomical dummy to create that painting" would be kind of weird. Do I say AI assist when I actually draw it all myself. I guess disclose as AI assist then say that in my description. IDK how to proceed.
