I've joined several Etsy seller courses (Gold City Ventures, Printables by Number, and others) and this video is by far the best explanation of Etsy SEO I've ever come across. No hate or shade to the course creators but I think the fact that you work for eRank really helps. Thanks for breaking everything down so clearly!

Etsy SEO is a really difficult topic so I don't think many people know how to approach teaching it. I was a preschool teacher before I became an Etsy coach, so I've found that it helps to break down Etsy SEO the same way I taught my kiddos. We all learn in a similar way, no matter how old we are. 🙂

So the SSAR swipe files work, and fast. The first day using them, it opened a dialog between a customer and I. He mentioned that he saw an item he would have put on his order, and that he might make a second order for that item. I casually mentioned I have several items of a similar theme. Instead of buying the one item, he bought it along with 6 other items. I had inspired him to dig deeper into my listings (I have 90+) and he found lots more. Had I not used the swipe messages he wouldn't have responded and I wouldn't have had the chance to upsell. Chain reaction. 😁 Thank you for that file, it's invaluable!

Hi Starla, this video is a little golden nugget. So well explained. I’m much more clear now on how to work on my SEO. What about Etsy search to complement Erank data?
@StarlaMoore
@StarlaMoore 2 года назад
Hey Claudia! You can use Etsy search for the purpose of gathering initial ideas, but keep in mind that the results generated by the Etsy search bar are not based on what shoppers are searching for or buying. They are shopper-catered, but not shopper generated, which basically means that the results that pop up are basically Etsy's way of suggesting what they think you may be interested in looking at, as a buyer. And this is all based on categories used when sellers list their items. It's important to always check these keywords in eRank before using them, because even if Etsy is suggesting these terms to you, it doesn't mean shoppers are searching for these terms specifically.

Hi Starla, I am trying to understand your definition of 'low hanging fruit'. For instance you picked out 'social worker gift' and 'matron of honor gift'as examples. Both had around 1200 searches, but I'm a little confused about the 'competition' for these. One had 'greyed out' 10,000 and the other had 'greyed out' around 12,000 searches - with a little sliver of 'green' in the grey part. What does the 'sliver of green' mean? Was the competition 10,000 and 12,000 - or was it less? And what made you define these as good choices or 'low hanging' fruit? thanks Starla!

OK so wouldn't the addition of social worker deter buyers who aren't looking for a social worker gift? Just interested in hearing your thoughts on this...
@StarlaMoore
@StarlaMoore Год назад
Not at all! Nothing about the blanket says "social worker" on the item itself. And with that keyword being more toward the back of the title, it won't display in the title preview on a search page. They wouldn't even see that term until after they've already taken an interest in the listing and clicked it, at which point, they likely aren't spending much time looking at the keywords in the title. I see it no different from a woman buying a "mens" shirt. Nothing really makes a "mens" shirt exclusively for men. The shirt is just labeled that way so that those who may be looking exclusively for a mens shirt can find it in search. Seeing a tee shirt labeled in the "mens" section likely wouldn't stop a women from buying it if she liked the design because nothing about the shirt is "only for men". 😀 Random example but it was the first that came to mind because I prefer "mens" shirts. lol!

I love you Starla, you are an awesome teacher! One question - you didn't fill up your Title - is it bad to stuff your Title with the words you put in your tags? I always fill up my title with as many words that fit- am I doing it wrong?
@StarlaMoore
@StarlaMoore 2 года назад
So, there are two sides to this. On one hand, Etsy tells us that keyword stuffing is not a shopper-friendly way to structure your titles because the titles to not "read" well for the shoppers looking at them. On the other hand, Etsy's algorithm will still rank you for lots of keywords if you're using that large variety in your titles. There's really no right or wrong answer here. My suggestion would be to do what works for you. Like I mentioned in my video, it isn't necessary to totally keyword stuff a bunch of repeat words in your title (beige blanket, wool blanket, knit blanket, etc), because Etsy will broad match the word "blanket" in every possible combination anyway. It makes your titles look a bit cleaner and more reader-friendly. However, if you have keyword stuffed listings that are already doing well, don't change them. You're likely ranking for those keyword-stuffed titles and have already built a listing quality score for them, so changing them could result in more damage than good. Etsy SEO is all about experimenting, then studying your experiment over a period of 60-90 days. So next time you list something new in your shop, feel free to give my strategy from the video a try! No two shops will see the same results when testing different SEO strategies due to past listing qualities, their customer and market experience scores, and the length of time they've been on the platform. So the best metric to measure when it comes to Etsy SEO success if YOUR personal results. Test, test, test - then repeat what works! I hope this helps!!!

Hello and thank you for your content. I mostly understand the concept of exact vs broad match. However, I am still debating the best way to do tags. Would it be Wife Gift, Father Gift, Mother Gift, etc, or Wife Father Mother and free up two more Tags for other descriptive words?
@StarlaMoore
@StarlaMoore Год назад
There unfortunately is no black and white answer to this, as "wife gift", "father gift", "mother gift" would give you an exact match, whereas "wife father mother" and then "gift" would only broad match. Both work. Both will be recognized. But as the seller, you have to make the hard decision of which terms you want to exact match for and which you want to broad match for. And trust me. The choice is never easy. But experimenting is the only way to know which will work best for YOU. 🙂 So test Both strategies across a few listings and keep an eye on your stats.

hello Carla, really good material, how I know which one is my exact match keyword?
@StarlaMoore
@StarlaMoore 10 месяцев назад
Exact matching simply means that you've entered in a keyword (within your title or tags) in the exact order that shoppers are searching for that same combination of words. For example, if you wanted to exact match for "sterling silver necklace", you'd need to have the phrase "sterling silver necklace" completely in tact in your title/tags. If you used the phrase "starling silver gemstone necklace", you would not exact match for "sterling silver necklace" because the word "gemstone" would interrupt your exact match. Love your videos starla, i'm going to be purchasing the pro erank using your link soon, just learning and watching through you guides at the moment, i'm just wondering you mentioned on the pro version you check to see if your keywords are still good or not, let's say a keyword is not doing so well, but your listing is however doing well and selling overall, it wouldn't be wise to remove that keyword from the listing right? as it might mess up the seo of the current listing since it takes time for etsy to give you a score as you mentioned. I'm assuming it's only worth removing a keyword if it's doing bad if the listing isn't not selling at all/or has a few sales?
@StarlaMoore

That's correct. Never change keywords, title, etc for a listing that is selling.
@fdl3692

Hello, I have been adding a lot of new stock recently. So they are from a few days old to max 4 weeks old. I guess I should leave them be for a while then? However, I have upped my etsy ad budget for about 40 products (a lot of them new) and have seen that some are costing me a lot of money in clicks without getting a sale. Looking at the search terms they were clicked with, I have seen some to be rather irrelevant with the broad matches that etsy put together. Eg I wrote shell stud tops, and Hippie earrings so etsy pulled me up in a search for "Hippie Tops". etc etc... In some cases I have deleted or changed these tags or parts of the title already to try and salvage my ads budget on useless clicks. Thus, as you say I have interrrupted the etsy algorithm work prior to the 60-90 days (which seems a long time to sit on unsold listings without reacting). Do you have advice on etsy ads and optimising listings using the ads search data? Or should I just be studing the general etsy stats? Thanks Matt
@StarlaMoore
@StarlaMoore Год назад
Hey Matt. Don't adjust your listing keywords in order to try to influence the keywords that Etsy is recognizing you for in your Etsy ads! For one, Etsy search and Etsy ads use a COMPLETELY different algorithm. For two, Etsy ads are known to show products for irrelevant keywords - even keywords unrelated to terms if your tags. So you may be fiddling with your listings for nothing, which is both a waste of time AND it's not helping you to rank in search because you're not giving Etsy enough time to figure out what you want to be known for. Instead, you should have an option in your ads manager to TURN OFF those irrelevant keywords.
@fdl3692
@fdl3692 Год назад
@@StarlaMoore thanks for replying so quickly. I've been watching some of your videos this evening. I have turned them off. Wasn't sure this actually did remove them or if it was just insight for Etsy of which keywords I believe aren't relevant. I'll just turn these off then. @StarlaMoore
@StarlaMoore 2 года назад
@@mertcty do not edit your titles multiple times in a week. It takes Etsy 60-90 days collect enough data about your listing in order to build a listing quality score and position it in search. So by editing it further in this 60-90 day window, you aren't giving the listing enough time to grow. The same applies with your tags. Once you make changes, walk away and analyze your results while focusing on other things.
@StarlaMoore
@StarlaMoore 2 года назад
@@mertcty So yes, editing your tags or titles nonstop likely would negatively affects your traffic, as you are likely not ranking high in search. I strongly suggest working on your SEO a bit more slowly and spending more time analyzing results. After that 60-day window, use your Etsy search analytics (located in your Etsy dashboard) to see what words your listings were being found for. You can also use the eRank "Track changes" tool to see how changes you made to your SEO affected your views, favorites, and sales of those listings. You can do this by going to your "Listings" menu on eRank and clicking the "Active Listings" tab from the menu. From there, you'll have the option to turn on tracking for listings that you are working on. Check on those listings once a week to see how your edits have affected your views, favorites, and sales - and then, after 60-90 days, repeat what worked. Remove keywords that didn't work. Lastly, I recommend watching my video about search ranking: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rLf9gPPsO4Y.html It should help clarify some things. :)

Hey Rebecca. @@StarlaMoore Thanks for reply! I will check that video out! I read so much about social media not really being the one to convert into sales but it's better to write a blog and also email marketing. As you get more return for your efforts. What is your opinion on this? Also I think things like Insta is very difficult for introverts etc I would find reels/tik tok vids really stressful and probably would not do them. Also alot of crafters are actually introverts so the whole "hey its me look at me" thing doesn't work for them! 😬❤️

@StarlaMoore 2 года назад
@@rebeccapearson2155 eh. I don't agree about the social media comment. I have 1,000s of Alphas who make over 100,000k yearly from their social media marketing alone. Social media is the most powerful tool a business can use, so usually when you hear people say that "social doesn't work", it means they have consistently executed one form of marketing, haven't analyzed their results and pivoted based on those reults, and therefore have not grown. As with anything in business, there's no black and white guide for social marketing. You have to understand the mechanics of each social media platform (they all work differently and content performs differently on them), you have to understand the demographics of the platform for each of them (for example, Wendy's has a very professional facebook page, but on Twitter, they hold "roasting" competitions where they insult people who request it - and the fans love it!), and you have to be willing to adapt when things don't work. The issue is, most people post a pretty photo then get discouraged when they don't see results. That's not how growth on social works. You have to make 100s of posts, analyze the results, then repeat what works. It takes time. And most people aren't willing to put in that time. As for blogs - do you read blogs? I don't. How many people do you know who shop based on blogs? I'm sure there are some businesses who see results from blogs.... but I'm willing to bet money on the fact that way more people see results with social media marketing. As for email lists - YES. Email lists are amazing and the #1 bringer of traffic for most large businesses... BUT you have to be able to get people on that email list. And you typically need social media to do that. So social media marketing and email lists go hand in hand, rather than competing against wach other. I'm extremely introverted. I do not leave my house. I do not talk on the phone. I do not have friends. I'm the definition of a socially anxious hermit in the woods. Being active on social doesn't mean doing silly dances on TikTok though. For me, I have up days and down days. Days when I am enthusiastic about working, and days when I want to live in a little hole. Every time I wake up feeling great, I make the most of that time. I plan out and schedule my marketing so it's totally done. I record a few Reels/TikToks (no dancing, lol!) and keep them saved in my Reels drafts on Instagram so I can batch them out, as you cannot schedule Reels yet. I record RU-vid videos and schedule them out a week at a time. And sometimes it sucks. My dog passed away Monday night. Today is the first day I've felt even remotely like a human. I have a live stream at noon though, so I plan to watch a few RU-vid videos from creators I admire in order to siphon some of their energy, and put on a happy face for a little while. I've live streamed every week for 4ish years, and there are totally days when I show up at only 50%. The key is consistency. After a while, it doesn't feel as draining. It's just what you know you need to do, just like brushing your hair or your teeth. It becomes a part of the routein. And after a while, you even start to look forward to it on some days. I hope this helps!

I'm just wondering how well this listing has done? I often get told to include as much info in the title and I've seen many others who do great do so as well. Would a listing with more variations and words in the title get seen more as etsy can match it with more searched words? yaz xoxo
@StarlaMoore
@StarlaMoore Год назад
Both methods work in terms of the algorithm. Etsy tells us that shoppers prefer short descriptive titles. But yes, longer titles allow you to use more keywords. Since both work, the best thing to do as a seller is test both methods and stick with what specifically works for you. Everyone will see different results based on past quality scores so experimenting is really the only way to tell what will work best in your shop specifically.

@StarlaMoore
@StarlaMoore Год назад
While you can use all of those characters, Etsy specifically states in their Ultimate Guide to Search that sellers should utilize short and descriptive sentences. So its best to find balance between being descriptive and the overall length of your titles. I've had listings perform both with long titles and short titles, depending in the keywords used. 🙂

This was a great video Starla. I opened my eRank account and went through the steps with one of my keywords. One thing I noticed was that there were no stars appearing next to the list of keywords suggested in the keyword tool for building a list. So I wasn't able to do that. I wrote them all down by hand instead. Any idea why that should be? I've got the free version. But there's so much in there to get me going. Thanks for the help.

Unfortunately bad reviews can take a major hit on your listing quality score, which takes a lot of time to recover. This video was actually included in a much larger SEO toolbox I created. You can select Canada specifically, but the data will always be more plentiful for the US because a majority of Etsy shoppers are in the US. And most search trends will be exactly the same in Canada and the US, so though the Canadian data is available, I'd personally still look at the US data too. 🙂

There's no way to really answer this without knowing the exact keywords associated with your products, unfortunately. If listing expire after 90 days how do our items even have time to rank if it takes etsy that long to determine that info???
@StarlaMoore
@StarlaMoore 2 года назад
It's not that it takes 60-90 days to rank. 60-90 days is the time frame it can take Etsy to collect enough data in order to assign a listing quality score to your listing, which remains assigned to that listing, even after a listing renews. This is an average timeframe that Etsy gives us, not an exact "90 days on the dot". The listing quality score is one of the primary factors that contributes to rank. Think of it like a cake with ingredients. The listing quality score is like the flour. It's one of the MOST important ranking factors, just like flour is the most important cake ingredient but it isn't the only factor. Next week, I'll actually be releasing a free 24 minute workshop that will cover the mechanics of how Etsy's search ranking criteria works. Definitely keep an eye out for the details because it will go into the specifics of all ranking factors Etsy publicly shares with sellers, as well as how to optimize for each of them.

Thanks Starla, what do the green/red/ amber colours mean in the key search?
@StarlaMoore
@StarlaMoore 2 года назад
Hey Denise! I like to view them as a bit of a temperature gauge. For monthly searches, clicks, and CTRs, I typically scan for shades of green and yellow. For competition, I search for greens, yellows, and oranges when hunting for those "low hanging fruit" keywords, though it's totally okay to use terms in the red. In short, the colors are just there to accompany the numbers in a way that helps you to sift and glance through the information more easily. Reds don't necessarily mean "avoid", but they do usually indicate keywords that will be a bit harder to rank for with competition, or that aren't being shopped for as much in the "Search" column. Use them as a "compass", but not as a full GPS system on your journey, if that makes sense. 🙂

@@denise723 This is what most people assume. We have actually considered removing the colors, but we feel that people would be l;ost without the visual guide. Like I said, you don't need to avoid the red words. Just use them with the understanding that they will be a bit more challenging to rank for, and it may take time... which is why in my video, I recommend using one or two "high hanging fruits", then use a bunch of "low hanging fruits" that are easier to rank for.
@vickieclark5931
@vickieclark5931 Год назад
@@StarlaMoore The colors are a great visual, but sometimes I've noticed that they don't always mean a whole lot. Like I have seen search volumes of 30,000 with competition of 50,000. Now 50,000 is definitely red cause that is a lot of competition, but when you compare it to the 30,000 being searched, it's a pretty good keyword because the search is so high that 50,000 isn't too bad. That to me is usually when those colors can really throw us off cause when you have almost the same amount of search than competition then whether it's green or red, that's still a golden keyword. So if your not careful, you can easily just disregard a search term because of the color when in reality it's a pure gold keyword that would probably get you some good sales. That's the the negative I find with the colors is we depend on them too much that we can lose some good opportunities to ranking really well because of them.

@StarlaMoore
@StarlaMoore 2 года назад
eRank works the same as all other SEO services. We utilize data from the previous month and update our data at the start of each month. There is absolutely no possible way for any service to provide real-time keyword data. It just isn't possible. Nor does etsy release data like this. You CAN see the most popular items yesterday while logged into eRank by clicking the little flame button in the Trend report. But rule of thumb for Etsy SEO. Anyone who says they have real time Etsy keyword data is being dishonest. We provide data as fast as what can be provided, which is monthly for general keyword data and 24 hour for trend data. 🙂

Does E-rank work for German market and German language?
@StarlaMoore
@StarlaMoore 2 года назад
eRank data it primarily sourced from US shoppers, as US shoppers make up the majority of shoppers on Etsy. But you CAN search deutsch terms, though you may not see as many results. This doesn't mean that people aren't searching for these terms. It just means that German shoppers didn't make up the majority of those in the data panel. The best way to check is to hop into the keyword tool and check a few terms. You could also compare with english translations and synonyms to see which countries are searching for those terms more, as we currently have a pie chart that displays searched from the US, the UK, Canada, Italy, and Australia. We have a dataset titled "other" which is where Germany would likely fall in.

@StarlaMoore

Honestly, SEO for mugs isn't any different from any other product research. I wouldn't focus so much on "mug" related search terms when researching, as there really aren't that many ways to describe what a "mug" is. Instead, focus on the type of mug. What is on the mug? What color is the mug? What type of person would buy the mug? Is it a mug for a holiday? A certain person? Is it meant to be a gift? While having a few mug related keywords in your listing is extremely important, it's also important to focus on targeting the type of person who might want to buy your specific type of mug. 😉
