I did that same exact job on a 1960 Corvair about two weeks ago. It was hard to find really good information on how to pull that trim off. I came across several different methods on RU-vid but none of them really ended up being all that successful, especially for the rain gutter trim. The thing that finally worked for me was just a basic claw hammer and using the body of the car as a fulcrum point, putting the claw of the hammer right at the edge of the rain gutter from the inside and I just worked my way down the side of the car from front to back. it worked perfect. As far as the trim around the rear window I basically used the same method that you did but some of the clips just didn’t want to release enough to pop the trim off so I found that if I had most of the clips free I could just slide the trim Out of the clip that was left. Nothing I did bent or damaged any of the trim.
Any time you strip the paint from an old Corvair it is an archeological dig and I have stripped more than a few. Ya never know what you will find. Good work, keep it up.
I have restored several old cars ( 3 of them Corvairs) The windshield glass HAS to come out. The rust beneath the rubber gasket is the achilles heel of these cars!. Even with new glass and a new rubber seal water will still get in through rust holes around the windshield and ruin the dash instruments and the floors
If you enable closed captions I think it will make it easier for some of us to watch your videos in bed at night with someone next to us who wants to sleep. Also we hearing aids wearers (and there are lots of us) will have a better experience.
When you re-install those taillamps be certain you grind all the rust off your contact points. Corvairs have an issue with taillamps not working well due to corrosion at their ground -points
Corvairs do not have bolted-on fenders. The entire car is welded into one piece. Because of that when there are collisions, the impact force travels sometimes far away form the impact,...you will find creases and dents in places not even close to the impact zone. Keep at it!
Thanks for putting up the content giving details of what to and not to do in the time-consuming rebuild. Just curious, why are you not taking some of your smaller parts and using a light media sandblaster to clean such as the cowl… Keep up the Work!!!
Blast cabinet is small, crappy, and inaccessible at the moment. Plus, it runs off the same limited air supply I was using for some sanding operations. Overall just not worth digging it out.
RU-vid has cc enabled on this vid just fine. Don't know why people ask for something that works already. I don't use it for most stuff but at least it works. Where I live it is in our best interest to keep the license plate difficult to remove. Lots of plate stealers around. Your idea for the fender is the way to go. That repair someone else did is crap. I like those rims:) Your voltage was too high and the wire feed was a bit slow, but you got it done ok.
Hey would a little bead/media blaster help for that rolled edge on the cowl piece AND from the back side above the headlight buckets?? Also, have you ever used evaporust? I've gotten good results from it. Additionally, Edd China from Wheeler dealer fame dipped a whole range Rover chassis in a pool of evaporust, it's on RU-vid. Impressed with the Eastwood surface prepper, that thing got 'er looking good. Good work on the fender patxh🏁🏁🏁
I've seen him often use some SunnySide brand liquid rust remover very similar to Evaporust that's widely available at hardware stores up here. He recommended it to me for our Supra restoration, and it works great, just as good as any Evaporust results I've ever seen, and much more affordable. Give it a shot some time
Yeah, I use "Rust Remover" from Menards. I've found it seems to work slightly better than Evaporust, for my applications. I could media blast, but with that body damage I'm up against diminishing labor returns instead of just replacing the entire fender. The time invested for blaster setup and cleaning is not inconsequential either. Additionally, as I found out the hard way, blasting blows BIG holes in thin metal!
