i think one way to stop ai going random places is to add a supply to each army. when the army runs out of supplies it will take massive attrittion. supplies can be gathered by occupying high dev provinces. attrition will be calculated based on how many provinces a unit has traveled without supplies.
Nah fam, that's the Austrian Schlieffen Plan: 1. Go around the Danish defences in the Danish Strait (All the way around the Baltic, in fact) 2. Quickly knock the Scandinavians out of the war by taking over their castles in Eastern Finland. 3. Finally, turn your attention to France before they've had the chance to properly mobilise their forces. It's actually genius, you just don't have the intellect to comprehend.
To be fair that is what I would personally want Austria to do. You can fend of the French because of the mountain fort and earlygame combat width, and Austria helps you white peace the 40k Scandinavians you don't know where are.
In my game in Mallorca, allied Spain lost to Aragon, they just decided to go to the other end of the map to capture his ally, and btw even their fleet was destroyed
As a Denmark player i just laugh as the AI rushes towards my capital with ever single troop they have, only to get blockaded and left there to rot on an island.

i was trying to play a game as Austria and to stop the ottomans from becoming an empire i guaranteed Byzantium and almost won the war but Athens and Byzantium would sit next to a battle as it went on and wouldn't help they just sat in Morea the entire war not moving just waiting to die as I exhausted all my money and manpower
it wouldn't be EU4 if you weren't in a massive war and you get peace treaties from OPMs the AI immediately targeted day 1 while the great powers stack wipe all your armies
If you can't 1v1 France ignore them and knock all the other allies out as quickly as possible. RIP war exhaustion but then your AI allies will jump on France. I had to do this with Granada + Ottomans vs Castile+France PU. I naval invaded/shattered retreat forced march all the italian forts then knocked out HRE minors quickly. Then Ottobros could stomp France and un-siege all my spanish provinces. If you move the capital to NA and control the straight your WE won't be that bad. You only need one decisive war in this game to snowball.
I love how france decided normandy and the rest of its cores can wait, but castlle that they don't have any damn mission claims on yet, WE NEED IT PRONTO.

Me : cant call my ally to offensive war because they are in debt and near bankruptcy. Also my ally months later : dragging me in global scale offensive war with major superpowers that seems will not be end in 10 years.
Ever since he was the 8th great power. Always the same! Couldn't keep his men from dying of starvation. "Oh but not our Austria! Couldn't be precious Austria!" Attritioning them blind! And HE gets to be a super power? What a sick joke!
Having something simliar in my current England game. Got Austria, Spain, Brittany, and my two French vassals all going to war against France and it's various Italian allies. 3 wars in a row won, but almost everytime, Austria gets peaced out in a white peace because France seems to just beeline for Vienna and ignore all of us mass occupying France. The Italians have defended Paris at this point more than the actual French have!
The French AI does that when at war with Austria. Most times they go for the fort above Switzerland first and then go straight for Vienna. Unless they are also fighting Bohemia, where they go for Prague before Vienna.

The AI Austria-Hungary did the same thing against me, because one of my vassals got mil access through the Ottomans and they sent their entire army to my beloved Maghrebi Empire.
Literally just raged out of a game as Serbia, as we had triple the amount of combined manpower as the Ottomans, but Austria did this EXACT MANEUVER towards Ottoman Crimea

The AI loves Scandinavia, I was playing as France and was allied to Sweden, every time I declared war on Prussia which outnumbered us 2:1. The AI Prussia would send its entire army into Sweden which resulted in me fully occupying them.
But seriously, this game came out nearly a decade ago. They really can't fix the AI to make it competent at actually doing useful things? Even after a decade it's still this bad?
PDX has gone with a quanitity over quality approach. As many games and dlcs as possible, even if they all feel half-finished. And it's only gonna get worse since they're slowly going mainstream (especially CK3 but also HOI4 somewhat. Non-strategy players are their new targets, it seems)
