What happens if you crank up attrition to the max, remove the attrition cap (so the AI can't cheat) and build a level 8 fort in EVERY province? HUGE ATTRITION! In this video, I win ENTIRE coalition wars in EU4 by not even fighting ANY battles! I just tried this after I saw the video, but on Ironman. I had a rebel outbreak that wasnt big enough to take out a fort, and just died by itself due to attrition. Also Mercs combined with Forts become OP. AI used up its man power, I had no problem hiring mercs, assualting, and then finding a fresh unit once they ran out. This actually might be a viable meta

Imagine having to explain to the French public how 200k+ soldiers died without one single battle fought. How all of those casualities were during a siege against 12k defenders, and how they still didn't capture that one fort. And then that it's the sole reason Paris belongs to Switzerland now.

@@Cecilia-ky3uw Tried it against a Germany player as a diplomatically isolated Italy. Unfortunately he had by coincidence chosen ideas which make storming forts much easier. It's definitely not foolproof.

Just to let you know, rather than counting all of your provinces you can see the number of provinces in the Budget screen. Hover over the development icon on the budget page and the tooltip will tell you how many provinces you have. I think you can get that information from the ledger too, but its faster going through the budget.

If there's no battle or occupation after 5 years of "war" it automatically white peaces! That's what caused the game peacing you out toward the end.

i wouldnt count on it too hard, defensive idea's has an edict for 25% atrition reduction + quantity you can get up to 60% attrition reduction. Against AI feel free to try out.

Just as a point, attrition doesn't just count the troops who died, it also counts deserters and people who were sent back home due to injuries.

Those troops lost to battle in the totals were probably the troops that died fighting your rebels, I would doubt the counting system is that sophisticated as to segregate those out.

This is basically what I did in my Romania campaign a few updates back, and unless you fight a coalition of literally all of Europe, no one will spend the time to conquer your lands it’s great

Back in the day attrition was uncapped. Using scorched earth could actually win you wars, but that was long ago.

Now I'm actually thinking about a full -fort maintenance% build so I can have as many forts as possible. I thought a monastic order at first and sure you can get an extra -5% but Monastic Order locks you to a duchy. If you form Bukhara then form Mughals and keep Bukhara's ideas you can get -25% from Bukhara's ideas, -10% from loyal Rajputs, -10% of Sidhi government reform, -10% from Defensive, -30% from policies for -85% fort maintenance total + you get all the other benefits from being Mughals. If you conquer all the way to the Great Wall of China, you can fully upgrade it for a global +2 Attrition to Enemies; also 2 monuments in Europe with global garrison modifiers... I wonder if any Missions give any permanent fort defense/fort maintenance/attrition/garrison buffs.

I now wanna do a playthrough as Dai Viet, who has +1 attrition and +20% fort defence as national ideas, conquer all of south east asia and place level 8 forts in tropical mountain tiles. Tropical increases attrition by +2. Obviously take all ideas and policies that give extra attrition, fort defence and garrison size and then just ensure that you have a big navy and a high quality army to kick the enemy stacks off your forts. To fund your massive forts, go economic+quantity and develop, also move your capital to the best protected part of south east asia and pillage enemy capitals as much as possible. When I reach year 1750, I'll declare war on literally everyone and watch the world descend upon the ultimate graveyard of empires!

The attrition losses only counts losses to attrition in enemy territory. The other losses will include losses to attrition in their own land or as they march massive deathstacks over all of asia because they can't pathfind.

You should've used ramparts, they give +15 fort defense and +1 attrition for enemies, plus you could use scorched earth to increase attrition even more
