Eucalyptus as an Annual

Host Casey Hentges explains how even though eucalyptus is a tropical plant, it can thrive in the Oklahoma landscape as an annual. In colder climates, above cold hardiness zone 9, eucalyptus will grow as an annual. The further south it is, the more eucalyptus is a perennial.

Hello, here's some friendly knowledge from an Aussie :) -We have an alpine species Eucalyptus pauciflora that lives in snowy conditions in the Australian alpine regions (yes Australia has areas filled with snow in winter!), and is probably the most cold tolerant eucalyptus species. I wonder if that could handle your colder northern hemisphere winters?? It would be your best bet for a eucalyptus species surviving colder winters in Oklahoma. People can just google 'snow gum' and several different cold tolerant species will come up for them. :) -Your 'Lemon Gum' is actually a species of the Corymbia genus, not the Eucalyptus genus. Both corymbia and eucalyptus genus are apart of the same family 'myrtaceae'. It is easily mistaken as a eucalyptus, especially by those outside of Aus as they have many similar characteristics, as well as that amazing aroma. But we are getting into technical classification and botany at this point. Lots of people would still argue that they are a 'gum tree'. -A fun fact: most eucalyptus species are not tropical. The genuine tropical areas of Aus have the least amount of eucalyptus (but they definitely have them there!), as many other dominant tree species flourish in easier living climates and provide healthy competition for space. Eucalyptus often dominates in climates/regions that have much harsher conditions. This is a large portion of Australia's climate. Aus has very different regions including arid, temperate (most eucalyptus are arid or temperate species), temperate rainforest, woodlands, grass plains, coastal, sub topical, tropical and alpine alpines!!! Your lemon gum is definitely a sub-toprical to tropical species and I have seen them very old and tall. The trunk is amazing as old growths. Hope this info is helpful to you all! Happy gardening!!! :D

Here in CA, there's a lot of eucalyptus. I make tea from the leaves when I have a cold, it helps a little.
