This version of Czech Republic is one the most dynamic teams I've seen in my life It was pure joy watching them play and handle the ball so easily with their mixture of talent, shrewdness, speed, and power Under the tutelage of the old fox Karel Bruckner Their match against Netherlands is still my favorite Euros match ever And Milan Baros's volley is still the goal of my dreams
Coming from Latvia. I do remember this Euro, I was 10 years old, and was watching matches with my grandpa. Qualifying to EURO knockou stage is so far the biggest achievement for our country. I do remember the emotions when Verpakovskis scored vs incredibly strong Chezh Republic, and the battle our guys gave to Germany, that lead us to historical 0-0 tie with the grands of football.
Greece Baby 🇬🇷🇬🇷🇬🇷🇬🇷 Wow 2004 was amazing. Panathinaikos does the double. Greece wins the Euro. Then hosts the Olympics. That Euro 2004 tournament was insane. That semi final golden goal was so insane. Jumped up, celebrated the goal, and immediately ran out to head downtown to celebrate 😂😂😂😂😂
Five biggest shocks/miracles in the history of modern football (no particular order): 1. Iraq winning the Asian cup in 2007 - only a few years after an illegal invasion, and death of hundreds of thousands. 2. Denmark winning Euro 1992 - didn't even initially qualify for the competition. 3. Hellas Verona winning Serie A 1984-85 - lost only 2 games and conceded only 19 goals in 30 games. 4. Leicester city winning the Premier league 2015/16 - odds of 5000-1 at the start of the season. 5. Greece winning Euro 2004 - deservedly won, beat the heavily favoured hosts twice, as well as knocking out France along the way.
Of course, Ivory Coast's last AFCON triumph should be mentioned here. They lost 0-4 to Equatorial Guinea, almost got grouped, had a manager getting sacked midway through the tournament, but still won the entire thing at home soil!
they were playing on home soil with players like kessie, haller, fofana etc. hardly a shock. they might've had issues during the tournaments but they'd have been amongst the favourites when the tournament started. @@ezraezra2928
@@ezraezra2928 Ivory Coast winning AFCON was not a shock at all based on the calibre of the players they had. The only thing that was surprising was their underwhelming group stage performance They were the favourites to win the tournament
Hello from Brazil🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷! 2004 was the year of surprises on football. Here in South America: Once Caldas from Colombia🇨🇴🇨🇴🇨🇴 won the Copa Libertadores over Boca Juniors. In Europe: Deportivo La Coruña reached the semifinals of Champions League even beating Milan. Porto won the Champions League over Monaco, another surprise. In national teams: Greece🇬🇷🇬🇷🇬🇷 won the Euro 2004. Brazil🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷 out of Athens 2004 Olympics, Argentina🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷 and Paraguay🇵🇾🇵🇾🇵🇾 reaching the Final in birthplace of the Olympics and Argentina🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷 won the gold medal🥇🥇🥇. And in women's football, Brazil🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷 reached the Final knocking out Sweden🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪 on semifinals (One year before, in the Women's World Cup, the Swedes knocked out Brazil🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷) and won the silver medal🥈🥈🥈 losing the Final for the USA🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸.
There were more: Valencia won the Liga and the UEFA cup, Arsenal won the Premier League without losing a single game and Werder Bremen won the Bundesliga and the Cup - actually, with Charisteas in their roster. The guy that was the Greek euro in the final. What a season for him and for a lot of people.
The surprise elimination of former winners like Inter Milan, Ajax, Juventus, and Manchester United in earlier rounds of the Champions League also completed this strange season of UCL. Also: 1.Asian Cup: Bahrain reached the semifinal (probably the greatest underdog for any kind of Middle East teams along with Jordan's run on the last Asian Cup). 2.AFCON: Tunisia won their first (and only) major silverware, with big teams like Cameroon, Nigeria, among the others, disappointed a lot.
@@serhiymashkovskyi4702 Also, another South American underdog, Cienciano, won the Copa Sudamericana a year before, then proceeded to beat Boca Juniors in the Recopa Sudamericana (CONMEBOL version of the Super Cup). That was the only Peruvian club to ever win the South American club competitions.
“That time” must have been in a parallel universe. In my universe in 2004 they somehow managed to make it to the semis, 4 years earlier and 4 years later only group stage. World cups: qualified only in 2006, lost in the group, did not qualify before, have not since. Great power😂
Football in 2004: - Porto win UCL - Valencia and Werder Bremen do the double - Arsenal Invincibles - Birth of The Special One - Kid from Rosario makes his pro debut Tragedies/scandals: - Miklós Fehér dies on the pitch due to cardiac arrest - Thierry Henry Ballon d'Or Injustice - 04-10 Caso Plusvalenze, scandal over alleged false accounting at Italian football clubs
I remember watching the final with a friend. After the final whistle we just started to laugh like crazy. For me it's the biggest football upset ever, matched only by Leicester in 2016.
@@TucBroder yeah, Denmark head coach had to literally go get his players off of the beaches where they were on vacation 😂😂😂😂 I wonder if they even had a chance for a warm up friendly before the 92' tournament 🤔
@@TucBroder True, they qualified by luck, having Yugoslavia dissolved. But once there, they still had more than decent roster, with some big names like Schmeichel and Brian Laudrup. It was an upset, sure, but that Greece was something else.
@@zigababnik8780 yes. Denmark were not that big surprised to me. People forget back in the day the EURO only had 12 qouta for qualified. Not like 16 or 24 qouta like right now, cause denmark easiky will be qualify back then. They had decent squad who played in big club. Even in 2020 they deserve to be in the final. Such tiny country with solid team all around..
This style of showing only the moment after the ball flies into the gates is awesome. Just amazing to see this esthetic goal of Morientes (0:50) and come through those memories of old good days...
Czech were best team in euro 2004, Portugal were fantastic and entertaining, Duth were briliant, France were defending champion who had better squad than euro 2000 And somehow Greece became the winner. Footbal is crazy, sometimes you need a little bit luck cause aint no way greece had a chance before the tournament begin 🎉❤
Greece were by a mile the best team in the tournament. They beat the hosts not once but twice, didn't lose to Spain, knocked out France and beat the Czechia in the semi finals. How you came to the conclusion that they were inferior to a team they beat is beyond comprehension, logic and common sense.
@@recruitmentch ofc greek fans. Biased and pathetic. By mile ? You mean like Spain won in 2012. Thats definition the best team by mile ! Greece were solid but there not the best team of the tournament. Lost to Russia in GS !! And in SF Czech were dominated the match. Stop lying to yourself. The Dutch were better team in 2000 and whos the winner. France. Id be like that. Or Portugal in 2016 who were struggle in GS with 3 draw. Doesnt mean they dont deserve the trophy in the end.
I think portugal will win euro in 2024 The golden generation of luis figo was great. But this generation of Portugal is stronger. Portugal 2024 > Portugal 2004. Portugal was always considered the dark horses in tournaments.. now you have to admit that portugal are now favorites to win it 🔥🔥🔥 France, England, Portugal. One of these 3 will win
I wish Netherlands could be favorite. They deserve it and this country deserves more titles.. But Netherlands for me are the dark horses.. they are always dangerous and anything can happen .. but they are not favorites... like I said.. portugal england and france are the big favs to win it in 2024.. but i am really excited about portugal . For the first time they are in the big favorites to win it!!!
Portugal and Czech republic were the best teams on that Euro. They should have played in the final. Greece's victory is the biggest mistake of the football gods.)
Denmark and Sweden did the "Disgrace of Gijon" thing to eliminate Italy by the virtue of H2H goals, but UEFA didn't disqualify both! That's embarrassing.
