Euro Trash Comparison: BMW 3.0 Bavaria VS Jaguar XJ6 1972

In this episode I'm going to check out two of my project cars, a 1972 Bmw Bavaria 3.0 and a 1973 Jaguar XJ6 4.2.
Both of these luxury sedans debuted to the public in 1968, and are historically significant for different reasons. They share a drivetrain layout, # of cylinders, braking and suspension technologies, and they were direct competitors in the global luxury car market. I'll go over the engines, their development, the chassis technology of the car, and the interior at a high level, and show you the unique quirks and features of each of them.
Which one would you sell? Which one would you keep? Leave a comment!

Keep BOTH. I daily drove a '76 XJ6L from 1988-1994 and a '72 Bavaria (exact same colors as yours: Malaga/Tan Interior!) from '94-''96. These are both AMAZING daily drivers if you can get them sorted (And you CAN! Nothing on those engines is plastic, VANOS clap-trap, parts pretty easy to come by...). The Jag is more like a 4-door GT car, will highway cruise at 85 mph all day, so comfortable (and with a manual transmission and triple SU carbs?!?! Lucky you! The floats in those SUs are made of BRASS...). Bavaria: the first four-door sports car, predecessor to the e28 M5, I'd bark the tires shifting from 2nd to 3rd AND 3rd to 4th. Such good times in both those cars, keep 'em both; love 'em both, you won't be disappointed!

M5 ,no but 735i ,the 5 series is a shorter car ,i also have a 520, 523i and a 535i being the last from 1980 the first from 74 with the same body and not forget the 645i from 75/6 that only in the 2000´s reapeared or the huge coupé from BMW ,don´t have much money but most of the cars i own were ofered ,because no one wanted them and bought one or two for less than 500€ runing and with perfect body ,also have or had 8 02 ,the 5 2002 ,one 1602 and a 1502 the more recent exactelly like my 2002tii(for free) sold it for 50.000€ ,5 years ago

I'm biased because I drove the Bavaria in high school. Amazing tank of German engineering. Smooth engine and very comfortable ride. The seats are like driving in a nice armchair. Vote for the BMW.

@@sundown798 i have a four door 3.0CSi from 74 or 75 but if we go back in time BMW was making litle cars like the other model from VW sold with the beetle in three volume shape in the 60´s that design in a smaller body was BVMW with 32 h.p.but i´ve colected all powerfull cars since late 60´s from BMW being a 68 coupé like in the 70´s the 2800 cs coupé i also own but with older finishings and already with some power like the BMW 2000 both my fathers cars

not more rare but being a bmw they trew them to the junkyard, the Jaguar was already reconised as one of the best brands in the world and the BMW this was the first with this level of luxury and power being their objective be like Mercedes but they never did ,after the end of rolls royce in the 80´s, Mercedes become the best brand of cars in the world@@addvancedgarage

for those who think , Jaguar ,Rolls Royce, Bentley ,Mini still exist they are nothing more than glorified BMW´s and for those who think Rover stoped existing ,maybe because there aren´t Land-Rover´s(now called Defender) or Range-Rover´s where they live but again nothing but glorified BMW´s , had a Defender 110 to work with 2.5 turbo-diesel bmw engine, as the 618 from actual Rover that i send it to BMW garage because it as the 1.8 turbo-diesel engine from BMW as in 525TDS or 318TDS ,in some countries they could have diferent engines like the gasoline 620 had the 2.0 Vtec from Honda . Rover did was a mess between honda and BMW in court of law discussing to whom it belonged ,like the MG 75 had the diesel engine available on the Honda Accord diesel who had not disel engine´s till the 2000´s ,than apeared the 2.0 CDTi

The BMW is called the E3 New Class...which many future BMW's were based on, early 5 and 6 series come to mind. Way ahead of it's time and well made....it had less toys than the Jag because it was techincally far better and when that happens, it gets expensive, but you could add the toys if you wanted. The indicators were considered quite at the time, until the EU standardised that all cars have the indicator stalk on the left. you'll notice BMW's after 75'76, the stalk is on the other side. Japanese cars kept it on the right as not in EU

Keep the BMW. As a Brit, I’ve owned British and German classic cars. As much as I love the British cars, you’d have a much easier life with the BMW. I own a 2002 and they’re just so well engineered. British cars at the time always had very creative designs; only to be let down by poor funding and management of the car companies that eventually killed our car industry. They’re lovely but not as reliable. Without wanting to jinx it, my 2002 has never broken down in 10 years of ownership. Both lovely cars though!

I love old BMW's but really don't like the new ones. From everything I hear they are not very good. I'd love to have a mid 80s 5 series that is totally restored. As far as the Bavaria being a luxury car, not sure they considered that luxury or not back on those days...esp in Europe. Maybe here in the US.

The turn signals are on the right side because it's where they should be. You use your left hand to steer the car and your right hand to operate the shifter and the turn signals. No swapping hands.

Super cool! I’m looking at a ‘73 Jaguar xj6 to daily to drive. I’m curious you thoughts on maintenance? I’m young and learning and one thing that steered me away from old Mercedes is they are incredibly expensive to fix since not many people specialize with them. Thoughts on the jag?
@addvancedgarage
@addvancedgarage Год назад
It seems like a nice car and mechanically sound, but mine isn't running yet so I can't give much advice. So far the parts have been not that expensive; the one thing you need to watch out for is that the resale value is fairly low on jaguars, so you need to be careful you don't wind up underwater.

I owned a E3 for many years late in the 80s and early 90s. Drove it also from Stavanger, Norway to Berlin a summer. Flat out on the Autobahn. I can say 110% sure it will outhandle ANY Jag from the same era with ease. It did also perform way better in roadhandling in the countryside twisties that the then current Mercedes models. Hugged the tarmac like a street h###er. The only minor gripe I had about her was that I did wish she had a pinon & rack steering and not the "snail". A at that time a better handling and chassis than the more famous CS. BRILLIANT car. A real car.
