On Monday October 9th, 2023, the Koblenz police received a report of a gyrocopter crash around 3 p.m. local time. The gyrocopter was carrying two occupants at the time of the accident. The pilot, aged 58, and his 33-year-old companion had crashed over Lake Laach (Laacher See) on Monday around 3 p.m. Emergency services have been tirelessly searching for the missing pilot.
One of the occupants, a 33-year-old female was successfully rescued, while the pilot was still missing. Authorities were able to interview the rescued woman. She was subsequently transported to a hospital by this helicopter while operated as Air Rescue Nürburgring. Fortunately, her injuries were not life-threatening.
The journey of the ill fadet gyrocopter had begun in Mainz for both the man and woman. It's worth noting that this gyrocopter is a two-seat light helicopter. Gyrocopters are aircraft resembling helicopters that operate using a rotor system.
Initially, the search for the missing pilot was briefly halted in the evening hours.
Following the gyrocopter crash over Lake Laacher, search and rescue operations continued on Tuesday (today). However, today's search efforts are notably scaled back compared to yesterday, according to a member of the Niederzissen volunteer fire department. Some resources are being retained for potential future use, and both the police and the public order office are present at the scene.
Since Monday afternoon, approximately 170 emergency service personnel, including the fire brigade, the DLRG (German Life Saving Association), the rescue service, and the police, have been actively involved in the operation. Diving teams from Lahnstein and Koblenz have also been deployed.
Helicopters scrambled to the scene were at first the Police of Rheinland-Pfalz EC135 registered D-HRPA. Then this AS365N D-HJOH came to the scene. Later, ADAC EC135 operated as Christoph 23 also atended the scene.
Update 10.10.2023; The wreckage was lockated and salvaged out of the lake on next day. The missing pilot was found still strapped in it.
