Today’s digital transformation continues to have a profound and transformative effect on networks, products, and services, offering great opportunities and posing significant challenges to society and the environment. The current phase of the transformation, fueled by a confluence of technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), 5G, the Internet of Things (IoT), cloud computing, virtual reality, and other immersive technologies, is crucial to responding to current global challenges and to help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. However, environmental sustainability considerations and standards must be included in the development and design of new and emerging technologies to ensure the sustainable exploration of natural resources, promote energy efficiency and sustainable consumption, reduce e-waste, and prevent environmental degradation. This session will explore the environmental impact of emerging technologies and discuss how a green digital transformation in Europe - rooted in multistakeholder collaboration, can lead the way in harnessing the full potential of emerging technologies to address pressing environmental challenges and promote global sustainability.
