One of the BIGGEST tips I could give new euro anglers is to avoid going TOO heavy TOO early. Although you want to get down quickLy, you also don’t want to be under all the fish on the first drift. Your point fly can be tight and taught but your tag fly can be lighter and higher in the column. Not ALL fish hug bottom all the time and are used to looking up to eat. Hope this helps!

Thank You to all who have enabled Us to further enjoy the sport of fishing by using these methods. I caught the largest trout of my life this season from these tips. Only a 20 inch brown, but had the hooked jaw and dark body. Old Boy. TYVM again, Dan and George! (no indicator though/ I use it now)

There is some really great information in this video. And Tom asks all the right questions, some I didn't even think of asking, but would wonder about when I was on the river.

My favorite way to catch fish when not in front of the camera! Super fun and the connection/feel is great. Tight lines everyone! 🤙

This is my second time watching this video, like Keith. I have fished my local tailrace using this technique and have had success. I haven't seen anyone else Euro Nymphing this tailrace. As for detecting a hit, I found that the trout hit my nymphs aggressively to the point I know it's a take by the pull. At times there is a lighter hit, meaning I have to really watch my sighter to detect the take. Euro Nymphing is an excellent technique to use on pressure waters such as the tailrace I fished. Thanks for sharing a great video with a ton of information!!

Great video. I am seriously considering getting a spare cartridge with this type of line to give it a try. The “fly fishing only” regulations in some streams where I live (BC, Canada) means that there are no indicators or external weight allowed and only a single fly is allowed. So I can see this technique being ideal for here.

You read my mind! A guy at the fly shop mentioned this last time I was In and I was hoping g for a resource on it! Thanks!

Second time watching this. Very interesting both times. Going up to Manchester first week of October with a generous birthday gift card from my son. Gonna try the Battenkill for a few days. Just may stop in Orvis and pick up a new setup for this style. Farmington is my home waters. Excellent for this practice I think. Thanks.

Landed my first trout on a euro rig today, 16 inch brown on a sow bug, with 6x, on a 10.5ft 3wt.. I was partially wrong with my last comment a month ago. I can catch fish, but I still catch more fish when they don’t see me.

I've never properly euro nymphed but in pocket water and smaller streams with aggressive trout I can stand on on a boulder, cast upstream and just peel in the slack and watch closely for the fly line to twitch or hesitate. In remote streams that don't get much pressure trout are not very hard to catch with some exceptions. I remember in the Sierra Nevada foothills I saw this brown chillin along with some rainbows and I could see my copper John drift right past his face and didn't even bat an eye. I did get a bite from him but wasn't ready and blew my opportunity but that happens can't win em all

Is there any fly line going out of the rod tip during casting or just the leader ?

What is the large high vis tag material you added to the last section of sighter?

So they have a thin Euro nymph line on the reel? Can the Rio Euro Shorty replace the need for a full Euro lione reel? It's 20 feet long.

What Orvis rods are you using? Those appear to have down-locking reel seats, but the ones I am seeing on Orvis site currently are all up-locking.

i fished for trout on a spinning rod my whole life and had mastered creek fishing with lead shot by the time i was a teenager. i remember seeing someone nymphing with a fly rod and was like whoa! he was fishing the nymphs with lead shot and tight lining it through the current. i had thought fly fishing was dry flies. i bought a fly rod and never looked back. its funny they call it euro nymphing now as i saw that guy doing it in the high sierra nevadas in california in in the 1970's.

Why release the same video 2 or 3 times? When I saw it I was excited that it would be new stuff.

so I'm not sure what the "sighter" is for if you're going to feel the strike anyway... seams like you could just tie a small piece of colored string or yarn onto a 4ft butt section of your leader with a tippet ring to your lower fly leader and that would do the same thing...

GD “I call it ‘contact nymphing’ because I hate how Europeans beat us at every WFFC”

Where I live this doesn’t work. If the trout can see you at all they will not eat. Like at all! Unless you can ‘euro nymph’ from 30 feet behind the fish you’re sol. :(
