George, thanks for sharing another tip and it was very well explained. You mentioned the gray Mojo Mud. I’ve been using a very small dab of tungsten putty for many years both for Nymphing and sight fishing with tiny midge pupae in low clear water. Use just enough to get the fly to break the surface tension and drift into the holding or feeding lane. Really miss the formula from Ligas Fly Shop called Shape a Wate and been searching for years for a replacement. I find the gray Mojo Mud works well in the winter but it’s too soft for me in hot weather. The closest formula I’ve found that suits my purpose for warmer weather is the formula sold by George Anderson at Yellowstone Angler’s. It stays on rather well and slides right through a Ketchum release tool without coming off. When the temp dips below freezing I find the gray Mojo Mud works well. Keep the tips coming and congratulations on your book, “Nymph Fishing”. You always seem to address issues in a pretty unique way and not follow the the standard methods. I like that.

Very useful tip. As a relative newcomer to fly fishing, and a tight-line fisher, I hadn't heard about this putty. Just ordered some. Thanks!

George, great suggestion ! Seems perfect for baetis rigs I was wondering when when you place weight on the line rather than on the fly itself, like a normal Euro fly, how close to the point fly do you place your weight, and are you trying to have the weight make contact with the bottom? Also, what are your feelings about using a drop-shot system, with all the weight below the point fly? Thanks very much, I have really enjoyed you videos and "Dynamic Nymphing".

It might seem weird, but I'm also interested in the gear (gloves, hoodie, etc) that you wear...

great idea with the putty, i'll have to try it. i hate using shot though...seems to tangle and spin so easily. i started tying all my subsurface flies with tungsten and leadfree wire whenever possible. any tips on preventing the "spin" tangles with the shot?

Hey George. At least for me taking split shot is extremely easy using the gremlin reusable shot with the wings to push together to take off. Sounds like you may not be aware of this. Thanks

Thanks for the tip, George. Could you tell me if you would do the same when you're drop shotting? In other words, would you put one split shot below your nymphs and then adjust the weight by adding or subtracting putty?
@Waty8413
@Waty8413 5 лет назад
Why not? It's just a method of quickly adjusting weight. No different than adding and removing split shot aside from the ease in which it is done.

Why not use a small tag in the tippet with something lighter than your flies are tied on? Then if you want to remove it just cut the tag off.

How much strike detection do we lose when we move the weight from the fly to a separate split shot/putty?
@Waty8413
@Waty8413 5 лет назад
It depends. On a drop shot rig, not so much. On a conventional straight-through rig, the farther you put the weight up the tippet from the fly, the worse it gets.

Right. It didn't look like he was rigging as a drop shot (although his idea still applies).

Question. Why the gloves, you don't look to be in an area that sunburning your hands would be an issue.

He is also a firm believer in being as camouflaged as possible fro the competitive days. Muted colors or camo for small stream fishing to avoid sticking out. I’ve seen many comp anglers doing this when steep foliage is their backdrop behind them.

George you are brilliant but using that putty it gets under your fingernails and if you deal with the public this is not a good look.
