Set to launch in 2024, Europa Clipper is one of the biggest, most-complex craft NASA has ever designed. Larger than a basketball court, and equipped with nine cutting-edge instruments, it’s going to try to answer one of the most-profound questions of all - Are we alone in the universe?

Simon, I work on Europa Clipper at JPL, helping Southwest Research Institute with their MASPEX instrument. Thanks for the exciting (and creepy) plug! NASA doesn't market itself nearly well enough to engage the public, and it's left to people like you to relate complicated things like this to the people who pay for it. All of the instruments on Clipper are astonishing examples of engineering that will enable cutting edge science, and your production does a great job of communicating that to those that value knowledge. For that, I thank you.

Do you know why it isn't powered by RTGs but gargantuan PV arrays?
@drdcon1152
@drdcon1152 Год назад
@@PBeringer That decision was made before I began working on the mission, so I have no insider information on that. I can say that the plutonium needed for an RTG powering a Stirling engine of the type that is qualified for the Jovian radiation environment is more expensive per watt than today's solar arrays.

@@drdcon1152 While you're here, can I ask you a laymen question that's probably a bit ignorant? Why haven't they engineered some sort of device with sensors and a cable that could melt down into the oceans below? Is it too expensive or just not practical because of the radiation problem, or something else? I've wondered most of my life about the possibilities of life below Europa's icy crust, and I really hope we can find out in my lifetime! Thank you.

It's me again; the father with the 11 year old son who is fascinated by outer space, and wants to work for NASA in its mission control. I'm excited to, once again, share Simon's space video with him. It's exciting to think my son may actually be involved towards the end of the Clipper's mission. I hope he will follow his dreams. And, yes we would like six or seven more videos about the Clipper.

I have literally been measuring this entire space craft since the prop module was a piece of sheetmetal laying on a table back in 2019. We were just at NASA Langley Research Center this summer to do the high gain antenna characterization. I've touched literally every single hole on the prop module a dozen times over throughout the build. Now go to DART which crashes into an asteroid in a couple days to see if we can knock it off course... I have all kinds of projects I've worked on that you guys should cover! Like Dragonfly - an SUV sized rover that will FLY around Titan - a moon of Saturn. Or do one on the Louvoir mission that will make the James Webb Space Telescope's images look like it was taken with a disposable camera. Or for the super sciency people do one on PACE which will use UV through IR wavelengths to scan the entire earth every 3 days to track what micro organisms are living in the oceans by analyzing the color of the water. I'm not the coolest kid on the block, but I do have the coolest job!

Great video! I actually loved it! As I have a solid background in sciences, I tend to heavily dislike when non-scientists make videos where they attempt to talk about a subject, going into the science, when it is obvious that the host doesn't have a clue what he's talking about and is just reading the script. And even with the best, most scientifically accurate script out there that does a great job at simplifying the more hardcore aspects of the subject, when the host isn't a scientist specialized in the field he's talking about, the result can never be good... I loved this video because, contrary to a few earlier ones, it knows it's limitations and doesn't try to go in depth into dense subject matter (such as talking about laws of physics, explaining how some measurement instruments function, etc.). and instead focuses on all the right aspects that the host can present while playing on his strengths: it's more a Science/Space News Video where the scientific project is explained in layman's terms, focusing on the what this mission/probe is, why it's being built and sent, what the mission hopes to achieve, when or giving a timeframe, and touching a bit on the how, without going into too much details.

What annoys me today are the silly faux-documentaries on the history channel and travel channel that try to pass off the supernatural as real. This does nothing but confuse people and convince the naive to believe megalodon is still hunting the oceans. It’s absurd. I was done when they aired a show about mermaids being real.
