The Finnmarksløpet in Norway is the longest and toughest dogsled race in Europe. Among this year’s competitors are Ben Voigt from Germany and 20-year-old native Hanna Lyrek. It’s a race that is always full of surprises and setbacks.
Participants face freezing temperatures, stormy weather and a lack of sleep. The Finnmarksløpet is to the Norwegians what the Tour de France is to the French, and it’s broadcast live on TV. Once they start out, the competitors or "mushers” only have their Alaskan huskies for company, and have to decide when to take breaks. Each team can have up to 14 dogs, with at least six having to make it to the finish. Given the tough conditions, Ben Voigt trains with his pack every day from August through late May. The German started mushing ten years ago after moving to Norway. He and his wife have 35 dogs in total at their home in Langfjordbotn.
Hanna Lyrek is a natural-born musher, having learned the art from her mother. Hanna competed in her first competition at the age of four - on her own. In 2018 she became the youngest ever entrant in the Finnmarksløpet, and this year she was among the favorites. Now 20, she’s among the best in the world - and her talents have also earned her welcome sponsorship.
This report follows the two mushers during training and the big event itself. They tell us about the vital relationships to their trusty animals, and the importance of adapting to their needs. Will they make it to the end of the grueling endurance race? And who will finish first?

I'm unapologetically going to wear my emotions on my forehead today and humbly unlearn the brain washing of my youth believing that because a practice is cultural it's right or just whether towards homo- sapiens or other animals. I'll say this behind a keyboard and in front of any capital city in this very precarious and changing world . NO ONE IS FORCING THESE DOGS TO RUN. They have been bred for this type of thing (double coats, tough cardiovascular systems, endurance) if you actually listened you'd hear them explain that in the beginning of this video. dogs have been used to pull sleds for generations if there were any serious issues with all this it would be stopped by now🙄🙄

Japan has done documentary about it, many dogs are hurt, bleeding on the feet, because they stepped on sharp ice, stone & frozen grass. They are too tried, too cold and feel sick. Many can't even eat after the race because they are too exhausted. Some dogs are too tire to move in the middle of the race, but all the dogs are connected together, they are dragged and forced to complete the race. If you want to win the race, you have to force the dogs to run under extremely bad weather, some dogs suffer from frozen injury on the ear tips, penis & tail.

1)an ethical musher will NOT keep a dog running that is unable to do so. The dogs that are ill or have developed physical problems are unhooked from the team and ride in the sled. 2) Dogs DO NOT cut their paws on rocks, as they wear booties to prevent such injuries. 3) therevare mandatory veterinary exams along the race course. If the vets are cincernedcabout any dog's health or condition, the dig us pulled from the team. 4) the dogs generate so much body heat while running, it is impossible for them to get frostbite on their ears, nose, or tails. Did you not see the amount of fur the sled dogs have? Not only do they have a longer top coat, they also have a thick, dense undercoat. Quite obviously, the Japanese production was NOT filmed at a race such as this one in Norway nor the Iditarod in Alaska.

I can not understand the man that speaks German or a Scandinavian language because you talk right through it. Use English subtitles so I can listen to him. I understand both languages but not at the same time.

Sorry but working the dogs like that for 12 hours is too much. That's abuse as far as I'm concerned. And how come Hannah gets to stay in the camper each night, the commentator said no outside help is allowed.

Those dogs love to run, I don't think that's abuse. If you put normal dogs to run 12h I agree it's abusive.

These dogs live for this.... it's harvesting the essence of their nature.

If the dogs don't want to run, they won't. I remember one of the top competitors from the Iditarod had to stop and take an extended break because his dogs would not run. And they absolutely take breaks within those 12 hours.

You should watch the documentary “Sled dogs”. This is industry is vile-exploiting dogs, keeping them chained for 21-24hrs a day. It’s awful.

They were literally born to run and pull:) Obese huskies with poorly maintained coat sitting on the couch all day are the ones you should feel so sorry for. While yes, you can find some irresponsible racing facilities (just like in ANY OTHER sport), most dogs are taken amazing care, get frequent medical check-ups, proper exercise, nutrition and love from their handlers. To add, you cannot possibly force a dog to run for hours a day if the dog does not absolutely LOVE to run:).

Until you decide to get tougher you will never understand where the actual limits are. Facing challenges and fear is good for any living being and is what makes us tougher. It makes us more resiliant. I bet you run away from all of that to a high degree, and that's why you will only see the world through that narrowminded view. There's no point living in fear, because it hinders us from our full potential. There's risks with everything in life, and it's better to face risk because it makes us all better prepared for future risks. Living by itself is a risk, so it's worse to shy away from challenges in life, because you'll just never feel ready for anything. Back to the dogs... Most people look at dogs as human babies which is so tragic because dogs have dog needs, and most people will therefor never see their true needs. Most people do not know how to communicate with their dogs because they still don't see them as an animal, as a dog. How will you then know how to treat or not to treat it... The dogs that are used for races like this are way tougher than most people will assume. Some may look like some similar dog lying on the couch all day, but looks can be very very deceiving. You need to understand behaviour to fully understand what can live inside these beings. They are pretty badass, I'll tell you that much.
