TV crews were quick to visit the areas in western Europe devastated by flooding in July. As they talked to victims and helpers, the shocking scale of the tragedy became clear to viewers. At least 170 people lost their lives.
The deluge swept away entire communities in Germany. Now, residents are gradually returning to their homes - or what is left of them. After parts of Rhineland-Palatinate and North Rhine-Westphalia were inundated, subsequent rainfall also left a trail of destruction in Bavaria. Locals have been joined in the clear-up effort by experts and personnel from the police, fire brigade and other emergency services and even the German army - again called in to help out as it has been with the coronavirus pandemic. Meanwhile, the Nürburgring motor-racing circuit has been turned into a makeshift aid center. The floods were the worst in living memory. Picturesque villages have been reduced to mud and rubble. Many residents have lost not just their homes and possessions but also friends and family. The cleanup operation has only just begun and is likely to take years to complete. This disaster of record proportions is one that requires state intervention - and the nation as a whole to also reflect on what mistakes have been made, and what preparations can be taken to deal with future catastrophes of this nature.

When I was a teenager we were coming back to the UK from Switzerland and we pulled off the Autobahn to look for a hotel in Bad Neuenahr, we couldn't find one and asked someone to point us in the right direction, and a lovely family offered that we stay in their house, and we did. We saw them a few times afterwards too. The Strattmann family on Mittelstrasse. I and the Pritchard family do hope they're OK and send them our best wishes because we saw that the street was very badly affected.

I'm from a city that gets flooded almost every year in the rainy season. Its called Mumbai. For years I had an apartment on the ground floor and during the floods, we had to secure the furniture and prised personal belongings to a friend's flat on the 1st or 2nd floor. Around 2007 we switched to a minimalist lifestyle. Best decision ever. Just 2 sofas that convert to beds, washing machine, dish washer, cleaning supplies, a little bit of crockery and utensils and 2 wardrobes for a family of 4. It go so much easier from then on. And looking at the way things are going out of hand all over the world, its best everyone moves to a minimalist life. Its just more practical and living quarters become more spacious and airy at the same time.

I was impressed by how quickly the Germans organized themselves to clear the rubble, standing in a line from a ruined house and passing the rubble from hand to hand to a waiting lorry. We Brits would not have got organized so quickly, or have co-operated with one another so well.
@elvenkind6072
@elvenkind6072 2 года назад
@@sheilanixon4479 That's sad to hear actually. Perhaps the result of urbanization. Where I live I know there's always a neighbor to ask somewhere if I need a hand in lifting something, for example if I've bought some new furniture. And if someone had lost their home, it's no doubt that people would've come together and done what they could to help. If people in a large area had lost their homes and lots of people had died, then, like the landslide we had, people will work and hardly sleep if there's hope in saving anyone. Nobody expect being called a hero for it either. A good name is, as written in the sagas, the only thing that last beyond death. BTW, I do doubt a bit that Brits wouldn't have come together, if things really demanded it. Just remember the bombing in the beginning of WW2.

When that much water falls in a hilly region, streams will simply grow too large to be controlled. Either one gives up the low ground near the rivers entirely, puts everything on stilts or accepts that from time to time the cities and roads have to be rebuilt.
@johnadams5245
@johnadams5245 2 года назад
Imo, This is the way. we must make all low lying areas next to rivers into parks and recreation areas, so even if theres a flood, only parks and sports places/recreational places that gets flooded instead of houses
@Arcaryon
@Arcaryon 2 года назад
This much water hasn’t fallen in hundreds of years in most of the affected regions regions. More importantly, a lot of water reservoirs, also build as safety nets against floods, were almost completely full before the events took place out of concerns for drinking water. Streams can be controlled if one is actually prepared in advance and experts had warned extensively of this particular disasters. The problem wasn’t just the water, it was that significant parts of the respective administration failed spectacularly, be it in warning systems and actual disaster prevention.
@lacdirk
@lacdirk 2 года назад
@@Arcaryon Additional warning systems might have helped, or might have caused people to evacuate and get caught in the torrents on roads and bridges that got swept away. Or it might not have done anything: as many said in this video, the people in these areas would not have left anyway. In theory the German taxpayer could have spent billions on fortifying river boundaries in cities, turning tourist areas into marshes (to absorb more water) etc. But that would have been fought by both the taxpayers and the people in these valleys, who would have been inconvenienced without "good" reason. And sure, the water reservoirs could have been emptied over the previous weeks. But why would they have? As you said, this kind of event has not happened for centuries, while droughts happen regularly. So the administration acted correctly. That's how life is: you can do everything "right", and still end up with a calamity.

One of the first things you notice when you explore German countryside is that all villages are built in the bottom of the valleys, in the most moist, damp and shady place you can find. With such flash floods becoming more common, I guess we'll be seeing more stories like this in the future. Until Germans wake up and start building villages on the top of the hills. I guess this habit comes from history, mainly the 30 year war, but we now live in different times and we have to adapt again. The sooner the better.

Yeeah, right. Move a few hundreds year old village just up the hill. Do you even understand how settlements worked? People settled close to the river because they needed it. Yes, those places are more likely to flood. But they were also necessary to live. And what you wrote is quite ignorant of the geography of the country. Those 'hills' are quite steep in some places. That's why there are already a lot of castles on them - because they are not that easy to reach. Do you want to make the daily deliveries to those places?

Most of the Northern Terrain in Germany is flat
@Arcaryon
@Arcaryon 2 года назад
Something to note: settlements are build in valleys and not hills or mountains because the maintenance and accessibility/ initial cost of building in hilly terrain is abysmal. The hills are also not entirely safe as landslides are even more frequent to occur if human settlement removes the plant life that strengthens the earth. A much more practical approach is river management. Water can usually not be stopped without extensive costs but it can very easily be guided. For instance, just like many major roads lead around more minor towns, rivers can be guided around the main settlements at a relatively low cost, certainly when compared to moving entire cities.
@Cau_No
@Cau_No 2 года назад
@@MitsukiHashiba Yes, and that area was devastated by the north sea storm flood of 1962. Also, the southern terrain is part of the Alps. Which also got flooded before, when the rivulets became streams from meltwater. (e.g. 1999) Even when after the Tohoku 2011 tsunami people in Germany were told "That can't happen here" - You cannot escape the water anywhere.

As a California floods survivor they need to remove all buildings and start over. The river water has gone into all homes and the water damage in the walls is still there. Remove all homes build higher away from all rivers and dams. Don't save the buildings they are highly contaminated with human feces oil and dead bodies before they were removed.

Yeah, I agree. We are already seeing outbreaks of deadly and drug resistant strains of fungus popping up everywhere...and these floods are not going to help that situation at all. Toxic mold, too, is no joke.
@Arcaryon
@Arcaryon 2 года назад
These floods are extremely rare so it’s not worth to move entire regions. Germany like most of Europe is also densely settled. Flood prevention can actually take care of events like this with relative ease, but not if the political landscape ignores the issue. It was a lot of water but not a tsunami. This kind of stuff happens a lot more in other parts of the world, the local governments just need to get better at the management and actually prepare in advance. It’s called a century flood for a reason, this much rain hasn’t happened in centuries. And even now, with some measure, it could have been handled. But sadly, as often, people only act when they have no other options left.
