The whole idea of a backpacking trip to Europe is to get lost, decide on the spot, watch people, see places, absorb the environment. You can't "make mistakes".

One very comfortable pair of shoes is essential, and two very comfortable pair of shoes are even better. When I go to Europe, I bring one pair of sneakers or sport/running shoes and one pair of shoes like Sketchers goga mat that can look ok with a dress. Thongs, sandals and hiking shoes or booths are other options.

For those who want to party, it is better going to countries cheaper than Europe, for e.g., travel to Latin America or Southeast Asia. You can party for cheap and enjoy beaches. Or otherwise, the best option is to go to a place in Europe where people go specifically to party (for e.g. Ibiza).

I go to Turkey in europe every few months and use all inclusive holidays plus backpack around other places. It's cheaper than going out for meals and clubbing in my city.
