I agree with people not knowing to cook in the US and loosely regulated, highly convenient fast food is a big reason for that. Also work life balance has gone to shit in the past decade or so. The adaption the US eats as Mac&Cheese probably has nothing to do with the original recipes as the most recipes don't call for strong tasting cheeses, but the concept, cheese casserole was quite surely brought to America by British and Italian immigrants. Even many US folks call stuff like Mac&Cheese and pizza "Italian" food, even if it has no European ingredients, and it being basically fusion kitchen food made from locally available stuff.
