In this extra long episode I’ll take you along a whole day on the EDT, the ins and outs of my daily routines, all the way from packing down my tent in the morning to finding a campsite in the evening. During the day I encounter wild animals along the way, both large and small. And of course a little bit of a mosquito dance at the end as well. So, will you be my riding partner for this fourth day along the EDT here in the Arctic?

Mike, your fork is fitted backwards! Rigid fork might work okay like that, but the head tube angle and overall bike geometry gets worse. Fit it the right way and you get a lot more stable, smoother ride quality and steering + less toe over-lap (if any). edit: it must've been a mistake since it's fitted the right way in your earlier videos :)

I was actually one of the volunteers who helped putting up the signs for Sverigeleden, although in my case just in the southern outskirts of Stockholm. Yes, the people who charted it really cycled every meter of it, to verify that it was OK. The organisation behind that was SCS (Svenska Cykelsällskapet) but I think that, sadly, it's gone into a bit of a decline. The Eurovelo people have not, as far as I know, visited here and they just based most of their routes in Sweden on the Cykelspåret routes by CF (Cykelfrämjandet) who also don't seem to do much riding along their own routes. As far as I know, they have simply asked the local tourist boards along their rough plans for recommendations and these in turn tend to be more interested in leading travellers to the businesses in their area than in actually finding good cycling routes.

@@BikeTouringMikeAs a child (growing up in Jämtland) I had a really bad time with the mosquitoes, but somewhere in my early teens I developed a high tolerance to them so nowadays I just get one or two itchy bumps in the beginning of the season and then they don't bother me. They still bite me, though, but I usually don't care.

6:46...interesting...when I was in Sweden (hiking) I felt very boxed in on the asfalt since everywhere else the roads eider led "nowhere" or were private. I havent done enough research tho and assumed the landscape to be same as home (CZ) with more forest and field roads that you can ever walk and that my map was simply incomplete since i was using a Czech app. I planned to see the carvings at Tanumshede and then walk to Ed taking some scenic road but in the end, only on the 4th day I arrived at a road that wasn't for regular traffic. I hope to bring a bike next time :)
@TorstenLif
@TorstenLif 17 дней назад
The Swedish west coast (where Tanumshede is) is quite populated with vacation cabins so finding a spot to wild camp can be tricky until you get more inland. And even then the woods are often too dense. Allemansrätten, "every man's right" means you can walk or cycle anywhere that isn't too close to where somebody lives, or fields where crops are grown or cattle are grazing. But it doesn't mean the landowners have to make it easy for you.

Late August-early September is great. The days aren't as hot and the nights can be a bit cold, but that makes the mosquitoes disappear. If you don't mind bringing a little bit of extra clothes and maybe a warmer sleeping pad, you're gold. And the colors in autumn are hard to beat as well.

I bikepack mostly in Belgium and a littlebit acros the border. We mostly don't have snow here but instead we have a massive amounts of rain so a good raingear is a must. I see that you don't use any shoe covers, are your socks and feet not getting wet when you cycle through the rain? Or you use water reppelent socks? I also noticed that the fork on your bike is backwards (or maybe i didn't see wel), is there a particular reason for it like lowered trail to achieve more nible the ride? As always super video and i wait impatient for the next episode! PS: I don't envy the mosquitos 😃
@BikeTouringMike
@BikeTouringMike Месяц назад
I sometimes wear shoe covers commuting to work in the rain. But the times I've brought them along on bikepacking trips, once they've gotten wet they have become totally useless for me. I never seem to get them dry. I've come to learn that my shoes dries pretty quickly when riding in the wind, and the socks I can always change.

Still water on a bottle isn't really a thing here in Sweden and Finland. They might have it in cities down south, but not up here in the north. Only carbonated water. I guess its due to the fact that we probably have the cleanest water in the world and plenty of it.

That is what we in Sweden call "Kalhygge". It's when the forest industry basically cut down all the trees (except for a few) in a single area. They plant new ones later on, but it takes a while for the trees to grow up. I'm not a big fan of that way to maintain a forest, there are way better methods to cut down trees, but unfortunatley not everyone agrees with me.
