European Foul Brood in My Bees | Checking Their Health

I have ventured back to the bee yard in town to check on the colonies that were infected with European Foul Brood. I need to see if they have cleared out or are still sick. I have a couple out here that are actually healthy colonies that might produce honey, but all the others have new queens and we need to see if they got mated and if they are getting healthy. Hope you'll come along and I also hope if you do that you enjoy this trip to the yard in town.

Thanks for joining me in my bee yard here in Louisiana as I share how I maintain my beehives. My videos are not meant to be 'How To' videos, but simply me sharing my experiences in beekeeping as I learned it from my mentors, teachers, and studies.

Bob Binnie showed an essential oil based recipe that had a good effect on riding his hives of EFB.
@MikeBarryBees
@MikeBarryBees 2 месяца назад
Yes, I saw that. It was camphor and tea-tree. I have some I want to make up to install come late winter as a preventative measure. I didn’t put it on when I realized it had gotten bad early in the spring because I just needed to work the proven method and his, while seemed to produce good results, just was still something he said he was going to play around with based on his talk with that PhD.. His interview on EFB with the PhD at UG was awesome. I was encouraged to hear that he recommended the essential oils in controlled doses as found in HiveAlive. That’ll be the fall feeding regiment for sure.

I had EFB last year and that first hive had the signs I saw when they were crashing. Good egg pattern but spotty capped brood. Not as much capped brood as you would expect in a colony. The older larva lokked dry and a few others twisted in the cells. Bees were pissy and runny on the combs. It might be time for medications. I've done a shook swarm, but they were slow to recover.
@MikeBarryBees
@MikeBarryBees 2 месяца назад
This is actually a follow-up to earlier videos where we determined they did have EFB. Meds are already finished and the bees are recovering. These were new queens installed to help with the EFB and as I said in the video, the new table of genetics helps with clearing it up. These last two colonies need to show us some larvae and we’ll know what we’re dealing with. The capped brood is from the old queen. I should know next time I’m in them and for now all but 2 out of 9 have cleared up.

I’m trying something new this year. Double deep with one honey soup then leaving a 3/8 gap on the end for ventilation and then another super on top of that with no top vent.

Hi normal with EFB to see lots of eggs and young larvae. Then spotty capped brood. It’s because the bacteria kills the larvae normally a couple days before it’s capped. The older larvae will be kinda twisted looking as it’s dying. The bees remove the dead ones and leave the healthy ones leaving a spotty pattern. Often times the very young larvae will still look healthy. It’s pretty common for spotty capped brood to not be the queens fault. Any time you are seeing full frames of eggs and spotty capped brood you will likely have some sort of brood issues be it EFB pms sack brood or any other issue like viruses. Queen takes the fall for all issues between her bees and keepers it’s a tough life

I don’t have the supers nor the height and strength to go up higher then 3-4 boxes including brood so I’ve started popping capped honey frames to extract and give back. Yesterday and today made 21 frames and filled a 5 gal bucket plus what I’ve got to strain off the cappings! So excited my Mac has been 5 buckets I know I’ll get more then that this year! That whole bucket looks to be VERY clear. Wonder what mine was. The privet is just blooming here in East TN.

@MikeBarryBees Месяц назад
Yep, I did that way for a few years. A frame here and a frame there. I actually did it last week to an extent. Whatever it takes to be sure we don’t hurt ourselves with the weight. Good deal on the honey!! I saw your Facebook post. It looks a lot like our privet honey. Hope you get a great harvest!!!

@@MikeBarryBees the crazy thing is privet is just now in bloom here so I wonder what it was before to get all full and capped. I know the neighbors apple tree didn’t bloom much at all and several other flower trees were lacking this spring. I have one of those cherry type trees that has the pom pom type flowers and others around have them but they all were poor in flowers this year. I believe in it was my first or second year that I got honey I had maybe 3-4 quarts of a clearish very sweet honey but I never have had a whole 5 gallon bucket of it. Plus more coming. Still so much to learn I’m quite curious what I’m my area would make it. 🥰

Condense down that colony to no more than two deeps or one deep until the population comes up or give them a healthy frame of capped brood. Give them a frame of capped brood two weeks later . This will bring them out of this issue .
@MikeBarryBees
@MikeBarryBees 2 месяца назад
I’m leaving them alone at this point. If they’re not doing well yet, then that could be a waste of resources on a bad colony. I think they’re recovered, and once I see the larvae I’ll know. Earlier on if I were at this point of health, I might, but not this late. Kind of a sink or swim deal I suppose. Thanks for watching!

Hey Mike. Looks like everything is humming now, or is that buzzing. Enjoy the video. As bad as your year was last year, ours was good. Seems just the reverse this year. Our bees are great, but the spring has been cold and wet. Not many swarms (a blessing for my hives) and now not seeing as many wild flowers, mesquite not blooming much, and as a result not much honey. But it is agriculture and we are thankful for any blessings that come to us. God bless. Hope to see you again soon.

@@MikeBarryBees Some of the old guys (hear me talk about them at 73 myself) The old guys used to add a few drops of tea tree oil to their sugar water and it had various effects like reducing the effects of nosema and the in hive bugs don't seem to like it either, it also has a positive effect on EFB, You can notice within days the improvement in hives treated thus, some oldies used to place an old hankie or rag with a few drops of both tea tree oil and eucalyptus oil and apparently this used to work as a treatment for EFB as well.

Great video like always Mike, glad to see the EFB clearing up and your teaching style of talking about it. Liked that that Bob Ross Chia Pet also.🙂 Do you plan on moving over to horizontal hives at some point as you get older, so you don't have to deal with the weight of the boxes? (May have already asked, I just don't remember) Once again, it's your hands on style that seems like a diamond in the rough to me. I'm thankful for every video you put out! Looks like your area is in for a bumper crop if storms don't cause issues.

Hello Mike I really think you have got it wipppped . Just maybe the one that may be a drone layer or she just needs to get wound up with her laying . I have a question do you know if it is ok to use DFM with supers on ??. It does not say on the package or I have never heard anyone say yes or no . I was thinking it would be ok but just don’t know. Our privet is in the flow now but we are having rain so I hope that doesn’t screwup my flow . We had a little over two inches over the last two days an more today an Thursday an Sunday coming more rain . But the good thing is I am just about out of supers now an I added twenty more last year so between rain today I guess I will be pulling full supers an extracting them an putting back on . I Am so glad you are on the up hill side . Thanks for the update. Thanks
@MikeBarryBees
@MikeBarryBees 2 месяца назад
I hope it’s whipped. As far as the Super DFM, I asked the makers and they said that the studies have shown that the probiotic does not show up in the honey. Personally I am not using it once supers are on. Just to be on the safe side.
