Hello oboists and oboe fans! This week I am joined by extra special guest Natalia Mielnik! She is a fellow "oboe influencer" and super star from Poland. In this series I'm going to show Natalia how to make a "North American" oboe reed from shaped cane to playable reed!
In Part 1 we do the tying. Stay tuned for Part 2 where we scrape and play test our reeds!

Hi Ron, Thank you for the video! Exactly where below the tip does one scrape to improve the response of high notes in both Euro and North American style reeds?

Hello Garren! I believe that the area you are referencing is the "blend" between the tip and the heart. If the transition is too sharp, response and depth of tone suffers, if there is not enough definition and "scoop" where the tip begins, there is a lack of clarity in the articulation sound. Hope this helps!

I saw you scraping the tip, and dude, where’s your placard? I don’t know how you do it in what I assume is the West Coast, but you gotta scrape tone windows about 3-4 mm behind the part where the tip meets the body of the reed, going back of your reed to where the scrape meets the bark. With how thick you have that part of the reed, that sound is gonna die far too quickly.

Hello Gold 440! Thanks for watching my video. Glad you enjoyed! I think we have an endemic of thinking that one's own way of making reeds is correct and there's no other correct way and I hate to break it to you, but that's a total myth. The best thing to do to succeed at anything is to open your mind, experiment and find what works best for you. I mention in this video I came to my measurements through years of trial and error, but I'm still learning and improving my reeds. By the way, I'm in Toronto (not west coast) so feel free to drop me a note if you would like an online reed lesson! Good luck on your oboe journey!
