Great video! I teach taking the oboe apart to swab but I definitely see the merits of having a one piece swab especially if you need to get water out fast. I am torn about usin feathers (I use a turkey feather). I know swabs do a better job removing moisture overall, but I think a feather can help get water out of toneholes better. In the winter I have a harder time with getting water in my tone holes and for me a feather helps. Outside of winter I use a silk swab.

Thank you Ron Oboeron for this demonstration and comparison of swabs. I'm a brand new oboe student, using a rental oboe that comes in a case labeled "SELMER", and two silk swabs. One of the silk swabs came from the "GIARDINELLI OBOE CARE KIT", and has a very small diameter cylindrical weight. The other silk swab came in the oboe case, and has an even smaller cylindrical weight. Both of these cylinders appear to be smaller than all the cylinders of the swabs that you demonstrated in this video. However, neither of these cylinders are narrow enough to pass through the upper joint of my oboe. They appear to get blocked close to the place where the reed fits. Do you have any idea what's going on with this? Thank you for your thoughts.

I actually use an oboe swab for my one piece soprano sax.

Thank you for this video. I would have appreciated it, if you had included turkey feathers in the comparison. After having a swab get stuck like a very tight cork, I will NEVER use a swab again.
