EUROPEAN RAILWAYS in the 1990s
A journey on the Zugspitze Railway (Germany) on the 16th May 1997
Ascent, Summit and descent from Eibsee
The Bavarian Zugspitze Railway (German: Bayerische Zugspitzbahn) is one of four rack railways still working in Germany. We visited this wonderful piece of engineering on 16th May 1997. We ascended to the plateau by means of the metre gauge line from Eibsee to approximately 300 metres below Zugspitzeon the plateau. We then ascended to the summit on the cable car for the remaining 300 metres. The line culminates at 2,650 metres above sea level, which makes it the highest railway in Germany and the third highest in Europe. The summit is at 2,984 metres.
The line is operated by the Bayerische Zugspitzbahn Bergbahn AG (BZB), whose majority owner is the Garmisch-Partenkirchen Municipal Works. In 2007 the Zugspitze Railway was nominated for a Historic landmarks of civil engineering in Germany [de] award.
We then descended back to Eibsee on the "Not so for the faint hearted" Seilbahn Zugspitze or Tyrolean Zugspitze Cable Car. An express cable car which gave magnificent views of Lake Eibsee and the Bavarian Mountains. The section that we travelled on from Eibsee is operated as rack only using the Riggenbach system.
