Eurostar Class 373 8000hp AC electric traction motor sound, powering to full speed from a stand

From the front of the train you can hear 8000hp (another 8000hp at the rear) being applied to take 800+ tons of train up to 186mph from a standing start.
The Class 373's 'lack' of power can be felt more on LGV lines south of Paris with steeper gradients. The Original Eurostar sets have circa 30% less power than their TGV equivalents, the worst power to weight ratio of all TGV family trains. Still a lovely fast train though, just takes a bit longer to get up to speed! I prefer these to the newer units that are taking over.

Damn, I was on a un refurbished one both ways. however the traction for this one sounds like the 373 I got on when coming back to england. I have no idea why it has that out of sync when they are on innerconnection est(name of the high speed line that links TGV nord with TGV SudEst

Out of sync has to do with 3-phase motor. It is same motor that sounds out of sync. There are 2 parts of the motor that make sound: rotor and stator. In older DC motors there were 4 poles www.electronics-tutorials.ws/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/io31.gif, thus stator pulled and repelled rotor coils x number of times, while rotor was pushing and attracting itself 2x number of times at given rpm. 2x frequency difference is an octave apart pitch, notice low and high hum simultaneously here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-iO4y0Ej29D8.html another good DC motor acceleration ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-75_tL2kWSoc.html With 3 phase AC motors 3 phase stator has 6 coils qph.fs.quoracdn.net/main-qimg-79cb962d35d28849446c2fb11821a2ef-lq, while central magnet remains 2-sided, north and south. Thus the same magnet has to repell and attract itself to stator 3x times, while stator still pushes and pulls rotor magnet x number of times. 3x frequency difference makes this "out of sync" perfect fifth dissonance upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/transcoded/5/5c/Just_perfect_fifth_on_C.mid/Just_perfect_fifth_on_C.mid.ogg but when it is stationary it sounds fine but when these 2 pitches slide - it sounds awful. Thus I like more the 4-pole DC motor sounds like this (another example is Thames link 317) once PWM inverter fades at 20mph ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TGSQd0411Ik.html To be honest for the sake of comfort for ears I would go with 4 phase motors, not only hearing pleasure but practical efficiency too: one wire can carry 2 phases provided they are 180 degrees apart. With three phases there is no 180* pair, so 3 wires needed. With 4 phases there are 2 pairs of phases 180* apart, so only 2 wires needed, each being 90* displacement. If I had more money I would love to experiment with this idea and check if my theory of 2 phases per wire works, trying to custom-build 4-phase motor running off 2-phase generator.

@@masteristscalerailroadmodels I do love traction motor sounds but I guess these ones at first are a bit too loud. Like electrostars have a nice sound..465s have nice sound 458s etc.etc. this is nice too but can leave tinnitus In the ears lol.
@bb-3653
@bb-3653 2 года назад
@@masteristscalerailroadmodels with what your saying it would make sense as to why it seems like AC three phase motors seem to have a dualistic sound to them. Like a higher pitch noise at the earlier speeds and the lower pitched sounds getting higher pitched as they hit around 70mph and upwards.

It just shows how fast technology moves on really. There just isn't a sound business case for anyone to buy them. Thankfully Eurostar have retained some.
@SansPareil
@SansPareil 7 лет назад
Tech does move on but in car terms would it be viable to say scrap your mid life car because a more advanced model was out and the only option for the old was peanuts scrap price, it must be viable but is surprising (given Eurostars delicate finances)? I can see many reasons why they did it and would have happened one day of course, just surprised its so viable now. I passed the scrap yard today, a real sad sight seeing such trains being torn apart (just power cars visible). I was also told (rightly or wrongly) that Eurostar did not make them available for sale to anyone else other than scrap merchants with the proviso that they must only be cut up and not resold on. A cynic might suggest Eurostar would be concerned if they got in to the hands of another new operator at cheap price who then might wish to start a competing channel tunnel service, given how complex a chunnel train is. It also seems odd (but not disappointing I add) that Eurostar wants to keep such a small thus non-standard fleet by retaining just 8 and sees no better solution at this stage. Non-standard driver/fitter/staff competence for example will become complex and expensive to maintain. I would sadly wager an amount that this small fleet wont be around for many years more and some other cheaper solution will be found. The refurbished sets are very very nice and feel like a new train internally. What could have been if the whole fleet was such treated....

The new trains 374s are usles and one broke down on the lgv oh and the 373s that are refurbished reach 300kph faster than the e320s un restced thay can easily beet the e320s gnc Alstom class 373s are the mother of all trains
@believereality7968
@believereality7968 5 лет назад
I think eurostar should of picked the Alstom AGV to replace the TMST the AGV is also faster than the velaro and has a maximum speed of 360kph then the new eurostar would of been called E360. In regards Alstom trains are always better than Siemens trains
@duncanbhaltaireanraigwilso9627
Wrong on all counts. Class 374 has a higher top speed (wher lines allow) , more power, a higher tractive effort, accelerates faster, and handles gradients better than the Class 373. 374 looks slower in passing due to it's longer but fewer coaches compared to a 373. If 374 wasn't faster that 373 it wouldn't have being able to reduce journey times which, it did. Class 374 should take over the Marseille run. It would handle the gradients better than 373, and be able to reach 200mph on LGV Rhine Rhône, and LGV Meditereanee.
@TheAmir259
@TheAmir259 5 лет назад
@@duncanbhaltaireanraigwilso9627 I agree, stop spewing nonsense when clearly, the 373 has the worst power-to-weight ratio amongst the TGV family and between the locomotive-based E300 & a fullset E320, the latter is far superior. Even max speed is only 334km/h (E300) vs 352km/h (E320). If you're just a TGV fan trashing on the Velaros then I'd love to trash both and say the APT is much better! Sure both are competitive but E300 specifically isn't better than E320!
