The Class 373 was truly ahead of its time. It looked like something from the future back then in the 90's, and still does over 25 years later. It's one of my all-time favourite class of locomotive. Thanks for this great footage - I was only a few years old when this was filmed.
Amazing to think these ran along side slam door 4VEP, CIG and CEP units when they were introduced, like you say up they looked like some kind of concept film for the future of rail travel.
So these are to be scrapped, am I right in thinking that they are standard UK gauge? If so, they shouldn't be scrapped at all should they! Run them between London and Norwich or on the West / East coast mainlines for goodness sake!
they can't the engine take so much power that no other locos can run on the same section on ohle as these it was a issue they had when some ran on the eastcoast main line
i agree but they have been run at high speed for over 20 years through the tunnel and its caused bad rusting issues on a lot of the fleet & there is power and gauging issues for running on WCML or ECML plus there to long to fit a normal station
Mechanically and electrically, they are well and truly shot. Running through salt water environments and then being shoved into an effective air ram several times every day while they make the 500-600 mile round trip doesn't do them any favours. The cost of completely re-engineering and refurbishing the entire fleet doesn't quite stack up against getting brand new, faster, less complex and more reliable units which would be cheaper in the long run, hence why only a small portion of the class are being retained for service.
0:00 POV: u have a condition call not being scared bc the train will not fall on u at speed at the corner also THE SOOUND IS AMAZING I COULD LISEN ALL DAY
