The contest was held almost half a century ago. People‘s taste changes over time. Let‘s just say that this song was ahead of its time back then. As a young kid watching the show back then, I didn‘t like this song at all. To me then, it was not catchy like the Dutch or the UK entry. Visually, I didn‘t find the performance appealing either, she didn‘t grab my attention like the beautiful blond Agnetha Fälksog of Abba did. ( I know it was a different year but I trust that you understand what I meant). At that time, I thought it deserved its 17th out of 19 placement. It wasn‘t until sometime much later in my life that I started appreciating this song. I‘m sure that if the contest were held again now, this song would have done a lot better.

Joy had the last laugh. The song became very popular and is still loved by ESC fans now. I believe this was at a time when the juries actually marked the dress rehearsal, not the show itself and they only heard the song in their studios , without seeing the artist. That meant they didn't get the physical presence of Joy's performance which counted for a lot. Also at this time I think you could only sing in the language of the country you represented or English , but not both. Here in the final lines the singers switch to English from German. The rules of the contest have changed a lot over the decades. If there had been a public vote too I am sure the song would have done so much better.
In 1975, just as in 1974, the native language rule had been suspended and artists could sing in any language(s) they wished to. If my memory is correct the native language rule was reimposed in 1976 until it was scrapped again for the 1999 contest.
@@madabbafan Not quite - the language rule was reestablished one year later (1977), with exceptions for Germany and Belgium who had already chosen their song in English when the decision was made. 1976 was still free choice of language, with songs in English from Switzerland, Austria, the Netherlands, Norway and - partly - even Italy.
Wait a minute.....i heard this some where.. Gerard Joling sang this with Dutch lyrics not so long ago. It's called 'Zing met me mee'... He must have thought , no one will notice. Got ye! This is waaaaay better.
I think true Eurovision fans are the ones who immerse themselves in this song from the first moment they hear this song and come periodically and get the dose they need from this song. Pure drama, Pure Eurovision! Love from Turkey.

The Netherlands was catchy and fun, but this was a next-level performance that deserved to win! Instead 17th place in a field of 19... What were you thinking, juries???
I’m glad i came across this watching a compilation dvd back in the day. Still cant understand how such a kick-@ss song didnt come in top 3. An all time favourite and classic. Also, it makes me think of car commercials 😀

Tolle Frau mit zutiefst humaner Einstellung. Immer wenn ich diesen und andere tolle Songs dieser Zeit höre, fühle ich mich zurückversetzt in die 1970er; eine Zeit, die ich, als Heranwachsender, noch miterleben durfte. Die Autos waren alle herrlich bunt, nie schmeckte das Eis besser und vieles war so unendlich freier und im direkten Umgang der Menschen/der Gesellschaft unverkrampfter als heute. Traurig und schade, dass wir vieles, zuviel(!) davon verloren haben. Wer diese Zeit noch erlebt hat wird dies sicherlich nachvollziehen können!
