Had the scores been presented from end to beginning of the running order (yugoslavia to italy) it would’ve made a much more spectacular voting sequence, with Sweden and the UK battling it out for most of it, until Yugoslavia and Denmark comes up out of nowhere at the end and Yugoslavia snatches victory at the last second
The Spanish song deserved a better position. A song by maestro Juan Carlos Calderon and the great voice of NINA. Whichever country came behind Yugoslavia deserved to win. It's a shame to say that the only time Yugoslavia won Eurovision was with this song, remembered as one of the worst winning songs of the Festival.
I think that their songs from 1983 and 1987 would have been better winners. They should in fact have won in 1983, if you ask me! However I think that there would be worse winners both in 1989 and before and after that year too. However tastes are different, though! I wonder who would have won if there was a televoting in 1989.....
During my spare time (read: procrastination), I tried to conduct this voting in reverse order. It is first a Sweden vs Austria contest, then it transitions into a Sweden vs United Kingdom contest. Italy also seem to do extremely well in the first half. After a particular round of voting, three points separate the top 5 (Austria, United Kingdom, Spain, Italy, Sweden). Denmark and Yugoslavia come out of nowhere (at somewhere around the halfway mark).
It's bizarre how some songs seem like yesterday while others feel like they're from Jurassic Park. Here's an alternate top 10 12 - Spain 10 - UK 8 - Iceland (so under-rated!: and winner of best trousers 7 - Greece 6 - Yugoslavia 5 - Cyprus 4 - Turkey and after that it's anybody… 3 - Belgium 2 - Austria (winner of best hair) 1 - Sweden
Yes I agree, although Wogan's commentary largely misses it out...mainly because of the lack of a reordering scoreboard! I almost wondered whether it would be worth showing a 'what you'd need to win' element, like in Darts lol :-) Before Yugoslavia got that 1 point, the UK could have taken it, but only if Yugoslavia got nothing from Germany at all (which was close, they only got 1 point), and Yugoslavia gave the UK 12....perhaps less likely, but it could say 'requires 24 from two juries'. No where to fit in in anyway! Overall, I didn't think the UK deserved to be second, but the singing in English thing gave us an unfair advantage I think.
@@thereorderboard is there a case when the purple light appears in any country that gets points that the country does not appear in other languages? Is there a case to change it?
When the points are indicated, the receiving country's name is indicated in German and Italian, which along with French (the board's "mother tongue", so to speak), are the three main official languages of Switzerland.
Not a great year by many means, but my top 5 are great. My personal points for 1989 (EDITED) 1p 🇨🇾 Cyprus 2p 🇹🇷 Turkey 3p 🇭🇷 Yugoslavia 4p 🇵🇹 Portugal 5p 🇬🇧 United Kingdom 6p 🇫🇷 France 7p 🇪🇸 Spain 8p 🇩🇰 Denmark 10p 🇸🇪 Sweden 12p 🇫🇮 Finland
AGAIN Italy had the best song but did not win (I am not Italian) ... and this one is an absolute classic ... one of the best songs EVER ... and in my top ten of all time Avrei voluto is really a gem ...
How I miss these days, every song sung in native language. To me this is what ESC is - and should be - about. An absolutely wonderful mixture of what the contest should sound and look like.
Great job there once again. I really love the purple light appearing across countries when they got their points, it looks amazing! Nice idea wit the waving flags too, but there's something I noticed about them, you never use rectangular ones! Is there a reason behind that?
Thank you! Yes there is a reason - there's a great resource called countryflags.com and they have free downloadable images of flags and you can get them square or circular or rectangular etc...however, the rectangular ones aren't standardised in shape. The Belgian flag is practically square, the Luxembourg one is different to the French one and so on...not to mention Switzerland! So I'd have to artwork them up to work in a grid - to make them a similar size, otherwise it'd be really noticeable that they are all different shapes. That's why I've largely stuck with squares or circles so far.
Sweden and Spain were the best of the evening. However, wonderful entries from Greece and Cyprus which brought small delicate songs that aged very well. Portugal yet again underrated, Finland showing they can be top 10 if they want and an Israeli kid who hit puberty while performing :)
@@stefan4997 a well deserved 0 points. It's sad that Thomas Forstner , who did amazingly well for Austria in 89, gained another 0 for Austria in 91. Here's a fun fact. The 2 closest finishes since 1975, in 88 and 91, Austria got nul points both times.
Cities where the points were awarded from and languages this year Italy: Rome (French) Israel: Jerusalem (English) Ireland: Dublin (English) Netherlands: Hilversum (English) Turkey: Ankara (English) Belgium: Brussels (English) United Kingdom: London (English) Norway: Oslo (English) Portugal: Lisbon (English) Sweden: Stockholm (English) Luxembourg: Luxembourg (French) Denmark: Copenhagen (English) Austria: Vienna (English) Finland: Helsinki (English) France: Paris (French) Spain: Madrid (English) Cyprus: Nicosia (English) Switzerland: Bern (French) Greece: Athens (English) Iceland: Reykjavík (French) Germany: Munich (French) Yugoslavia: Novi Sad (French) Lolita Morena dealt with the odd-numbered juries, while Jacques Deschenaux dealt with the even-numbered juries.
EDIT : for some reason, I have warmed to 'Rock Me' in recent months. I still wouldn't rank it as the winner but I no longer feel hostility to it (I mean, we did get the wonderful Helga and Oliver the following year after all). I have long felt that the fact it was an upbeat song closing a generally dull selection of songs that helped it to win. I have changed my points below accordingly but, as I said, it is not my winner. My points: 1pt United Kingdom 2pt Germany 3pt Austria 4pt Sweden 5pt Yugoslavia 6pt Spain 7pt Finland 8pt Portugal 10pt Italy and Denmark 12 points
The voting would have been much more exciting if the order of voting countries was opposite. Yugoslavia scored 85% of their total points after first 14 juries (117 of 137).
It would have, absolutely. at one point in reverse order, five countries at the top of the board would be within three points of each other. Yugoslavia and Denmark would be nowhere in the voting until past the halfway stage.
tbh I totally forgot how awful most of these songs were...I wasn't born then, but as Croatian we watched this few times...and to this day UK and Riva were the best for me...sorry not sorry
Loads of good songs in 1989. I like all of them but l LOVE the likes of Sweden, Finland, Spain, Portugal, Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Italy, Belgium, Greece….well… I can mention all of them, basically.😊
Cheers! Love your concept with doing them in under an hour! I did struggle with whether to speed it up....the old viewer habits of wanting something snappy and all that!
Its a nice score board, but I keep mistaking these for the real ones and then realize the computer generated score boards were still much more primitive that year. As someone who is interested in the evolution of computers and broadcasting technologies, I prefer to see the scoreboards presented as authentically as possible.
Thanks for taking the time to comment, and thanks for the comment before the comma lol. Otherwise there's plenty of videos around on RU-vid with the actual scoreboards, as you know. I do make an effort to state the aim of the channel on both the video description (which is a useful read, sometimes) and the channel 'about' page. I even talk a little about the evolution of the technology and how design has been applied to it, so although I am replacing the original design, I'm not ignoring it.
@@thereorderboard I must take this opportunity to praise your scoreboards, they seem based on the 1998 design principles and that year had one of the best (it not the best) score boards ever. Would your software extend to emulating an electo-mechanical scoreboard?
This was my first ESC I saw live on TV ... I'm getting old 😉 Austria had the best song, one of the best in ESC history and should have won instead of Yugoslavia (what a shit song - one of the worst ever)
