Eurosong 1996, aka, the one that pissed everyone off. I love how you flipped the VR idea on its head and created a VR Studio instead of integrating it with the blue room. I know that NRK was showing off, but I give them credit they did a great presentation. Although, using all those graphics used so much power from those Silicon Graphics workstations that it made them forget how to add and the scoreboard lagged a bit sometimes. Also, the fonts & colors they used made the scores hard to see. I also agree with you on the juries completely missing the boat with Gina G. I mean, it was one of the few ESC songs to become a hit in the United States and I heard it growing up! For it to only get 8th (7th at the night), would be a slap in the face to the Brits. I would understand not winning, but being like top 3. Personally, this was the year that Portugal should have won. Scraping by the pre-qualification round (it placed 18th) to winning the whole thing would have been the best underdog wins in ESC history, and possibly would have brought more viewers the following year. Ireland was an alright winner, but Europe had enough of Ireland winning (and winning by a mile) almost every year and the juries in general that ratings were going down fast. Also, having one of the largest contributors to the EBU & the contest and the EBU telling the Germans to f off didn't really help with rating either. Hence, the reason they introduced televoting in 97 for several countries...and the big 4 in 2000. Anyway, amazing job with the scoreboard this year, and I can't wait for 1997! I'm pretty sure you'll figure out how to draw countries by the time you make the scoreboard for 1998.
@thereorderboard

Great comments! I felt the Silicon Graphics effort was undoubtedly impressive, although some odd choices were made. The chains and bolts were occasionally right in the foreground and were of quite low res quality for something so large and prominent, yet the flooring had intricate tile detailing on it. Conceptually it shows the tech is still new and people are unsure how to implement it - the whole idea is a little bit disconnected from the rest of the branding or the stage. But such a great idea to have maps, floating heads for the spokespeople (and this is only the third year we've seen them in vision), and shots of the green room all the way through at the back (Olso 2010 would spend a lot of money doing that in actual stage rigging form, of course!). The design of the scoreboard almost feels like a second thought, but it's size was important to show off the trick of walking in front of one panel and behind the other - technically very skilful, but probably a bit 'all the gear and no idea' on that one. Half the audience probably didn't notice it's significance.

I can totally understand as to why you created a brand new studio as opposed to integrating the scoreboard with the live show. But by goodness you did an outstanding job. Full marks! general consensus from everybody here on the comments is eurosong 96 was the year in everything (for want of a better word) f***ed up! And I for one totally agree looking back on it. For starters, if televoting had been introduced many years earlier for certainly most countries, the majority of the European public would no doubt have gone for UK to win. Argue all you like about how Gina was off key and we we're in a unwinnable starting position (no one has won from being second up). But this definitely miffed a lot of Europe that the scoring was all over the place. More so in recent years. Be you any money Germany would have done far better if they had qualified. Not a winner, but certainly top 10. I would go on about everything else involved, but there are others on here that speak it better than I could. Honestly can't wait for 97 now. Top job as always man! P.S. The UK entry was the first record I ever bought 😂

Another great board you have there! I appreciate the hard work you put into making another room; I also like how you indicated songs that could potentially get relegated (though under the 1997-2000 system, it looks a bit messy). 1996 is pretty much an acquired taste in terms of songs, not unlike that in 1995. If one likes the ethereal, ethnic-influenced songs that permeated the 1990s (especially with the top three), it's a good year! If one is looking for something like "Ooh, Aah, Just a Little Bit", then they will have to wait a few more years when the televote is instituted to get more modern songs. With that, I'd imagine that this represented the nadir of Eurovision in terms of popularity, especially with the image of the fans leaving when they realized Ireland had won it again. When the eighth place song does better commercially than the winner, something has gone awry. The production, on the other hand was solid--the oil money was put to good use! I like Ingvild as a host; she was bubbly and it made for some good viewing. The postcard concept was good too! 1 pt - FRA: I was torn between this, Belgium, and Finland for the final spot in my top ten. I also grew to like Croatia and Austria's entries since watching it. I was put off by how slow it is (which is one reason why it bombed), but the serenity and the use of the Breton language grew on me enough to give it a place in my top ten (along with my Francophilia, haha). 2 pt - POL: My third favorite Polish entry ever! Kasia puts a lot of heart in this dramatic ballad, and i could feel her pain with the music. But the best is still yet to come for Poland...:) 3 pt - NOR: I thought this was the weakest of the top three, because it felt kind of linear in progression. But it's so pure and heavenly. 4 pt - GRE: A bit weaker than their songs from 1992, 1993, and 1995, but still pretty good! It does remind me of springtime a bit. 5 pt - EST: This was originally a spot ahead, but then I kept forgetting that it exists within the top five. I do enjoy it, though--good build and the duo's voices work really well. 6 pt - PRT: Portugal's highest placing until 2017, and it was well-earned! Very welcoming and fun, and it certainly reminds me of summer. If I remember clearly, this came in 18th in the audio-only pre-qualifying round, so its sixth place on the televised show could be attributed by Lucia's and the orchestra's talent! 7 pt - GBR: The very modern bop that we all needed. It deserved all its commercial success and its Grammy nomination. Critics would go for how Gina's vocals weren't the best, but I didn't notice them at all--I was too busy dancing, that's all. :) 8 pt - TUR: Sebnem Paker's first appearance, and Turkey's highest point total to date (thought they placed 9th in 1986). It reminds me of a quiet fall day, filled with melancholy and introspection. At one point, it looked like Turkey's average would be too low to participate in 1997, which piqued me. Imagine a world without Dinle...that would be a shame. My top two are very much even in terms of my liking for them; they are both ethereal with some really good vocals! No matter what, they are my favorite entries from their respective countries. I keep going back and forth on them, but here we go... 10 pt - SWE: When I listened to this for the first time, it felt like I was plopped into a folk legend! The lyrics told a story, and the instrumentation created a winter wonderland. In addition, Nanne and Maria's vocals work well together, adding to the enchantment of the song. It was curious to see how despite winning the pre-qualifying round by a lot, it took a while before they got into third place. But... 12 pt - IRE: I felt like The Voice was more grounded in the country, both in the lyrics and the sound. A bit repetitive with "I am the voice..." yes, but it conveys a story of beauty and suffering all at once. Very much a spring song, it wouldn't be what it is without Eimear's angelic vocals. Breathy, but conveys the story well. P.S. If I had to switch out any of the songs here for any of the NQs, I would switch out Spain and Iceland for Germany and North Macedonia. Planet of Blue is a total bop and Samo ti is super melancholic, and Kaliopi adds some really good vocals there.

Another stellar job indeed, with your write-up being massively insightful as always. Really liking the VR-ception of this concept: a VR stage in a VR stage! And being true to form with the orange and grey (sans golden yellow) colour scheme of 1996. Interesting noting the power and finances NRK had for this undoubtedly groundbreaking idea back in 96, and of course the familar 'Playstation-esque' graphics with the nut and bolt flying through at random. Not including what must have been a significant amount of time setting up the design, did this take much longer to do and create vs your other boards? It seems/feels it'd have been on the same range as your Eurovision 1991 scoreboard which had other 3D elements in there but just expanded, but this - as is the case with each of your fantastic iterations - has raised the bar with all the little pleasant details. Fab work! And yes, Gina G also takes me back to school discos and the glorious sound of the 90s (bar Britpop coming through)... good times 😄 Great upscaled footage too. 2020 has been a year of the emergence of restored quality to these pre 2000s contests (not entirely from EurovisionAgain though they've been a great movement and distraction this year!) Looking forward to the dark and moody / X-Files-esque / younger (Boyzone!) vibes of 1997!

I can’t imagine how much work this must have involved. I really love how the top 5 is done. A few thoughts on this contest from me: - What’s a Ceefax? 0.29 ;) - Terry refers to it the 44th contest 0.33 - That tree at 0.46 is an interesting shape - Terry seems as shocked as anyone Germany was relegated 1:10 - Despite her grumpy face here, I met Queen Sonja when she visited Ireland in 2006 and she was very nice! - I don’t think the pre-selection did its job so well, there’s quite a few really poor songs here - I liked the song captions, with the artist name not appearing until well into the song - The success of Gina G in the charts compared with her Eurovision performance shows how out of touch Eurovision can be. She was terribly out of tune though - At the time I thought Ingvild was so rude and abrupt to the spokespersons, so different from the presenters who went before her. Now we could use her to keep the attention-seekers we’re stuck with these days in line! - Amazing how Cyprus was in 2nd place at the halfway stage, then saw its vote collapse - Funny how many things tried out this year didn’t last: the rebranding as “Eurosong”, the good luck wishes from politicians and the VR voting - I fear this is a stupid question, but was the stunt with the Norwegian spokesperson planned? I guess so...but back then there were really strict EBU rules that a country couldn’t know how the vote was going until they’d voted. I wonder how they got comfortable

Queen Sonja gets around doesn't she?! I felt she might have been thinking 'why am I here for ANOTHER one of these?' just as the cameras settled on her face :-) Great points here too, and yes, this board is so interesting for it's climbers and fallers! The spokesperson thing is such a good point - I've noticed that it's not every year that they emphasise the rules around spokespeople not hearing how the voting is going. The stunt was almost certainly planned, a production like this doesn't allow for many surprises and the camera angle on the chair was far too low to frame a person sitting on it. At least with the VR, she could have been kept away from the scoreboard itself and wouldn't have seen anything when she walked into the blue room without peering into a monitor (Especially with the design of the board being so small).

A lovely recap and genius idea to create your own virtual studio - well done! The only improvement I would make is to indicate which songs are the favourites with a larger text, as it was rather small for my liking. On the subject of favourites, for 1997 Terry mentions how the favourites were Ireland and the United Kingdom, followed by Italy, Estonia and Germany. I’m not sure if your research will bring up different findings though?
@thereorderboard
@thereorderboard 3 года назад
Agreed about the text size - I was at the end of my tether with how complex the studio was and somethings slipped a bit. There wasn't really clear data for 96 and 97 from my usual source, which in part explains the smaller text for this one.

@@thereorderboard No worries about it, it was a marvellous production overall! From the favourites I’ve gathered: year - source - favourites 1997 - Terry Wogan (BBC) - Ireland and UK, Italy and Estonia, Germany 1998 - Pat Kenny (RTÉ) - UK, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Poland

A few other things I couldn’t fit in the description: - Corrections: Yes yes, we all heard it. Holland is not Poland. Only English spoken in a European accent would cause that confusion of course! Not sure why Belén Fernández de Henestrosa (cool name) wanted to award a Dutch province those points, or that Czechoslovakia were on the stage! Anyway, it means the Dutch finished 7th, the UK 8th and Cyprus 9th. I may have to revisit whether the boards should be corrected another time, but for now, I’m sticking to the broadcast. - If you're really enjoying this channel, consider following it on ko-fi.com/thereorderboard for the price of a coffee! Design updates and some behind the scenes vids available! - I think we see the best and worst of Wogan this year. He was great commentating on the interval, and the breaks, keeping his sharp wit aimed at the slightly awkward green room exchanges. Haven’t seen anything as slick as Hans Van Willigenburg in the 1980 green room, yet. I think this is the first time we’ve seen one half of the presenting duo head to do that role? The worst of Wogan? Well there was probably some clumsiness in referring to the Dutch entrants as ‘Ruby Wax and OJ Simpson’. Simpson was acquitted the previous October and was probably the most famous black male on the planet at this time - he would have been on people’s minds but not in a positive light at all. Maybe it’s not an issue but it didn’t feel right to let it hang in the video without comment. As with most things like this with Wogan, the truth lies nearer to ignorance than malice. - The first time we’ve seen maps involved in the scoring sequence. This will become and increasingly difficult issue for me in the years to come! - Although the same name does appear in the credits, associated with the VR studio…I was 9 at the time and not in Oslo. No, I’m not going to say this studio could’ve been designed by a 9-year-old - that would be mean. - Absolutely loved a new selection of countries being near the top of the board (at least for the first half)! I haven’t gone through all the stats, but this was Portugal’s best year so far, the same for newbies Croatia & Estonia and a second best placing for Turkey (1991 was also 12th, and 1986 was 9th…the best was yet to come for them). Although Cyprus spent a lot of time at the top of the board at the beginning, it ended up holding it’s 1995 position. - That fact about Lúcia Moniz (POR) being in Love Actually film! - Ooh Aah remains a big childhood song for me. Junior School discos and all that. I think Gina G coming 8th helped to solidify in the UK’s public consciousness that Europe and the UK are operating on slightly different levels. This was only the second UK Eurovision non-winner to get a UK number 1. I think the first was in 1961! I think you can read that several ways, but I think the juries missed the boat on it, but I understand that some of the vocals weren’t amazing. Of course, the small number of UK entries that even get a Top 10 in the UK charts probably says more about the UK’s attitude than it does the Europeans’. - Gina G raises Australian participation too. She joins a couple of members of the New Seekers, Olivia Newton-John, and a member of the Shadows (1975) as a small bunch from Down Under who’ve trodden the Euro-stage. - It looks like France, Spain and possibly Switzerland were the big regulars that got the most out of the new relegation system - they would have been dropped under the old system. Of course, Bosnia got a reprieve with Israel pulling out in 97.

@@giannis93FUL Hi, I know you regularly comment on this :-) I'm doing the boards in their host languages to do something different. I don't know if you want the names to animate to English, or whether you think they should be in English when I build them. For now I'll be continuing with the language thing, as I think a lot of viewers enjoy it. Of course, I know that after 1991 English became the default language for graphical elements of the show. I've always thought that was a shame - it doesn't help us English speakers pick up new skills!

Thanks for the explanation! Although, I don't understand how she said Czechoslovakia instead of Slovakia even though that country broke up 4 years before by that point. Most likely she was just nervous. As for those who avoiding relegation by switching from lowest placing to 5 year averages definitely saved France, Spain & Switzerland's butts from relegation. It was their high scores in 1993 (France & Switzerland), and 1995 (Spain) that got them to participate the following year. Although, I wouldn't be surprised the if the EBU floated the idea of using the 1994 relegation system, but it would have been a PR and ratings disaster to have France & Spain (and possibly Germany) be relegated for ESC 1997.

Again thank you and again, great scoreboard display. I liked the flags of the leading countries behind the screen. So 96 warrants another rant from me. Firstly, this was the first time that I managed to record the contest so in the following year, I became well-versed with this particular contest. So much so I became jaded with it and I don't care much for it even though it is a great production. And now the rant: I am Irish. I was furious that The Voice won. At the time I was just fed up with us winning (god be with those days!) all the time and I felt that the people visually walking off during the reprise signified a disdain for Ireland in Eurovision. While it is one of the better songs, I think there are other songs which are better. I also think that Croatia, Austria, Malta and (to a lesser extent) Netherlands were overrated whilst others were underrated as can be seen in my top ten: United Kingdom - 1 point (the best of the rest - I am indifferent to it really) Netherlands - 2 points Greece - 3 points (great song - it would have been 3rd place - but the choreographer should be charged with treason) Norway - 4 points (lovely song but not quite worthy of 2nd place in my eyes) Estonia - 5 points (the keyboard players looks like a serial killer) Belgium - 6 points (unfair that the Swedish song that ripped them off in 2001 did so much better) Turkey - 7 points (I prefer this to Sebnem's Dinle the following year, which is also wonderful) Slovakia - 8 points (I know its not the among the best objectively but I really like it) Sweden - 10 points and finally... PORTUGAL 12 POINTS!!!! I was gutted for them that they did not win this year. It is a lovely - but admittedly old-fashioned - song. It would take another 21 for Salvador Sobral to give Portugal its first victory.
