It's not about being a european country. It depends on who is in the European Broadcasting Union (EBU)!!! It's not called European Song Contest^^

"Australia is not in Europe" That doesn't matter. The most basic rule of the Eurovision is that its not about being in Europe or geographic placement.. But about being an active member of the EBU. That's how it's been since the 50's. Its about the euro VISON of creating unity. Not EURO vision and about being European. At all. It takes an active member ship of EBU to partake. Hence Morocco has partaken, Israel partakes, Australia is more than welcome, because they have active membership of the EBU though not in Europe. Whilst Romania ineligible and forbidden to partake in 2016, though in Europe, as their membership not active due to lack of payments and therefore an inactive membership of EBU... Being in Europe or not is absolutely irrelevant.. Its all about the membership.
