On Saturday 31 July at 21:00 CEST, a never-seen-before HD (high definition) cut of the Eurovision Song Contest 2006 held in Athens will be broadcast for the first time.
This high definition footage was filmed as part of a research experiment carried out by the European Broadcasting Union, ERT, the Institute for Broadcasting Technology in Munich and the research and development laboratories of Rai and the BBC.
It was never intended to be broadcast.
Many aspects of this high definition cut differ from the definitive version of the 51st Eurovision Song Contest that was broadcast live from Athens on Saturday 20 May, 2006.
We’re excited to share this experimental HD footage with you for reference. It is not intended to replace the original show which will be uploaded to the Eurovision RU-vid Channel soon.

I think it is worth taking to a moment to acknowledge how far technology has come in the last fifteen years. In 2006, HD was still a long way away for most of Europe. Now most of us are able to stream this over the internet in full HD!

To be fair, 2006 was the year that the HD DVD and Blu-ray formats were launched. And 15 years later, you can still only buy a physical copy of the latest contest on a standard-definition DVD!

Yeah tbf in 2018 everything was so good in terms of broadcasting but ever since they just did not evolve. Especially in a place like the Netherlands you would expect 4k broadcast. Oh well, maybe Italy can pull it off

When I was a child, I didn't recognize the beauty of Lejla. Took me many years to realize it is one of the best songs in the history of the contest. Would've been a deserving winner any other year.

Because Serbia (and Montenegro) should have participated, but because of some strange people in 🇲🇪 it was canceled. Look at Evropesma 2006 and you will see what happened. Serbia and Montenegro kept their spot to vote without to participate.

Now this gives me nostalgia... I was 7 years old as this came out, it was the first ever Eurovision I ever watched, and I watched as everyone was saying that Finland will win (note, I am a Finn myself), and I believed it. I just didn't know or understand what we would win, but we would win, and we did. I have watched every Eurovision Song Contest ever since, never missed one. I am glad to look back at this now at the age of 22. How time flies, but at least it has flown with the company of the lovely music in Eurovision

Depending on the camera work flags can interfere. Maybe the crowd is a bit quieter during songs than we have now, which would be good.

Definetely the Real Winner and of course should have won by Miles! But his staging was a mess and the stress eated him. Its obvious! Ah i will never recaver that he didnt won! Love from Greece and finally i remember the summer of 2006 Mihai had moved to Greece, every day he was singing the song everywhere even to the smallest beach bar or night club of Greece! Massive Hit in Greece until now, imagine what was happening back then! We were crazy about the song!

This year is my favorite. I couldn't watch this year on TV because it was not broadcast in Hungary since we didn't take part in the competition this year. I also bought the official dvd and cd. The most perfect ESC shows I have ever seen. The stage is beautiful and imaginative, with great songs and theme music, the semi-final and the finals opening act are both truly original and artistic, the ancient Greek dances are amazing. I also really like the postcards. So it's a real masterpiece! Thank you Greece! Thanks for the HD definition. Greetings from Hungary!

It's actually not so surprising that we have HD footage of old shows! Same with TV shows like Friends or Seinfeld from the 90s: They were shot on film and not tape, so if you scan again the film with today's technology, it looks as if it was shot yesterday and not 30 years ago

Actually, with some exceptions, the cameras were actually filming in HD.

I guess cause it wasn't originally planned for Croatia to participate. Serbia and Montenegro was meant to go but there was drama surrounding the song that was chosen so S&M didn't go.

You can say what you want about the Eurovision Song Contest, but technologically it has always been cutting edge 👍. It's interesting to get an insight of what goes on behind the scenes and how quickly and precisely everything has to run. I think it's safe to say that the stagehands prefer a singer with just a microphone 😉.

You can definitely tell the difference with the wide camera at the back of the arena. But really fascinating to see. So was 2007 the first eurovision that fully had HD cameras? 🙂

Wow ESC surely changed a lot in 15 years. The show and the songs are now a lot more internationalized, professionalized and just overall less cheesy. It’s good to see progress! Although this felt nostalgic of course. I still think this is one of few years where the top 5 was fully deserved. Although Bosnia & Hercegovina could easily have won with that masterpiece. And I still listen to Romanias entry to this day! Great year!

Joke's on you. Songs aren't more professional now, it is just that people's taste in music has evolved significantly. In 15 years from now people will be calling the Eurovision 2021 songs cheesy.

@@dimidrugg9592 I suppose that’s possible! But in 2006 you wouldnt hear most of those songs on the radio. Today’s Eurovision songs are doing very well on the charts! So I would stick to my argument songs are becoming professionalized and the contest are now attracting more and more talent :)

@@KajsaBernhardinaRussia's and Romania's songs from 2006 became internationally known. In 2021 only the winners are getting global attention (except for Azerbaijan, whose song became a hit in my country).

@@dimidrugg9592 It would depend on the countries but I still think the newer editions of ESC cater to a more global market than the songs did 15 years ago. Again, it does not mean the songs back then were not good! ”Lejla” for example is a masterpiece far better than most ballads that ever competed in the contest to this day!

@@KajsaBernhardina I partly agree about the global market thing. On the one hand, Eurovision is now taken more seriously than it used to, which is why the American audience is suddenly more interested in it (e.g. Justin Timberlake and Madonna performing, Netflix airing the show and last but not least: the Will Ferell movie). On the other hand, Eurovision now feels less like an international contest where all participating countries bring their own sound, and most songs sound similar and mainstream. There should be a balance between these two in my opinion.
