Charging options for electric vehicles can be complicated and there's a lot of potentially misleading information out there. In this video I discuss level 1 EV Charging, how it compares to level 2 EV Charging, and whether level 2 EV charging really is as necessary as nearly every article makes it seem when you own an electric vehicle like my Kia EV6.

Another great video, you explained it very well, especially with the science. Since my insisted that I buy both chargers (hidden markup), I figured that I should install the 240 circuit and use it. But, you’re right, the EV6 is very efficient at charging, even with a level 1.

240v charging is better, just definitely more costly.

I have a 2024 Jeep xe... level 1 charger took 15 hours to charge and on the first two days i have averaged 85kwh for those two days. I purchased a level 2 and since then i am averaging 60 kwh. I am factoring in total usage in my apartment. Before i bought this jeep i had averaged 45 kwh per day. I have graphs to show what i have learned through my smart meter. I would suggest to those who read this is to use a level 2 charger.

Yeah you had that much efficiency loss? That's really significant.

This is actually the closest I can find to answering the question - "Is level 2 really more efficient, or just faster?" I'm looking at upgrading the inverter/batteries at my off-grid farm to let me do level 2 charging as we do at home. Then I thought about it some more. We usually use the level 1 charger at the farm (12 amps = 1440W). At home, we charge the same car on our level 2 charger at 6amps. (Slower charging is generally better for battery life, and smaller loads are more nuclear plant powered.) Those are the same wattage. So, which is more efficient? It's not clear there's any difference at all. There's a 2014 IEEE paper claiming level 2 is slightly more efficient, but they don't compare wattage to wattage.
@TechnicallyJeff
@TechnicallyJeff Год назад
Yeah that's a good question. It's my understanding the higher voltage is more efficient, even at lower amps and similar wattage. I don't recall specific decent tests though.

Excellent information and recommendation! I’m building a home, will be ordering an EV6, retired and usually drive less than 50 miles per day. Did you purchase a cord with connector or just the J connector?

Glad to help! I will say though, if you're building a home, I'd recommend having them install a 240v nema 14-50 outlet. It would be easier for them to do that on a new build and shouldn't be much more cost and will set you up for the future.

Some EVSEs are advertised to use 15A and deliver 1800 Watts, which clearly is a lie.
@TechnicallyJeff
@TechnicallyJeff 8 месяцев назад
I've seen 12A and 16A. The 16A ones I don't like. They should only be used on 20A circuits, but often people use them on 15A.
@Antiorganizer
@Antiorganizer 8 месяцев назад
@@TechnicallyJeff Wouldn't a 16A one constantly trip the 15A breaker? Perhaps they purposely use below 15A to make less people complain. Ever used a KillAWatt to see?
@TechnicallyJeff
@TechnicallyJeff 8 месяцев назад
You would think, but breakers often allow a little more than their rating, so even 18 is possible. And you only want to run a circuit at 80% continuous load, so 12 amps on a 15 amp circuit.
@Antiorganizer
@Antiorganizer 8 месяцев назад
@@TechnicallyJeff So what happens if one were to intentionally seek a 16A EVSE that uses a regular house plug, and perhaps use a thermal imager to ensure there is no overheating happening? Even a little bit of extra over 1.2 kW is helpful...
@TechnicallyJeff
@TechnicallyJeff 8 месяцев назад
@Antiorganizer if it didn't trip the breaker, it is possible, but I definitely wouldn't recommend it. The 15A breaker is due to the gauge of the wiring. If you exceed the proper amount, you could absolutely cause a fire.

I'd be interested to see the efficiency hit charging level 1 vs level 2. In particular I would expect the level 1 charging to have some serious efficiency drop in cold weather if the car needs to keep the battery warm.
@TechnicallyJeff
@TechnicallyJeff Год назад
Yeah that would be interesting to see.

Hello, thanks for the video! Is a level 2 charger more efficient than a level 1? We have a Pacifica Plug in Hybrid.
@TechnicallyJeff
@TechnicallyJeff Год назад
Oh nice I have a Pacifica Hybrid as well. Yes, the level 2 is more efficient. Something like 90-95% vs 75-85% depending on various factors. We had a level 1 for a while, but got a level 2 once we got my EV6. The Pacifica now charges fully in just about 2 hrs which is really convenient.

If you have an available and dedicated 5-20 outlet, you'll be able to charge at a rate of up to 6 or 7 miles per hour, depending on the EV you have, in comparison to four or five using a 5-15 outlet. As such, when charging overnight for a 12-hour period, you'll be able to achieve from 72 to 84 miles of range, which is well over the average daily usage by most drivers. Sadly, this very affordable and effective 120-volt type of EV charging using a 5-20 outlet is hardly ever mentioned on RU-vid videos where it could satisfy the needs of most EV drivers!
@TechnicallyJeff
@TechnicallyJeff Год назад
Definitely accurate. Some EV chargers do allow 16 amps on 120v which is 33% faster than the typical 12 amp level 1 chargers you see. I have to be honest though, I find it's very rare that someone has a dedicated 5-20 outlet they can use for EV charging. But you're right, 16 amps gives you 1.9 kW charging which is around 5-7 miles per hour depending on conditions and your specific EV.
@marclemieux8269
@marclemieux8269 Год назад
@@TechnicallyJeff Where I live in Canada, homeowners frequently can make use of an available 5-20 outlet in their garages in concert with municipal by-laws in place in several towns and cities throughout the country. I'm lucky in that I have two of these 5-20 outlets in my garage area which is conducive to EV adoption. As such, there may be no need to install a level 2 EV charger unless you drive close to 100 miles per day or more, and, if need be, you'll be able to easily get by with a very affordable, basic level 2, 16 amp outlet such as a 6-20 that will provide you with up to 15 miles of range per hour. In most cases, it will simply be necessary to upgrade to a 240-volt 20-amp double-pole breaker along with the installation of a 6-20 outlet considering that 12-gauge wiring previously used on a dedicated 5-20 outlet should already be sufficient in order to meet municipal codes.
@TechnicallyJeff
@TechnicallyJeff Год назад
Oh nice. That's great you already have that. I wish that was the case in the US. We typically have 5-15 throughout our homes and usually they aren't dedicated. And yep a 240v 20 amp circuit would be great for most people.
