Ya know, I just realized how useful those googly eyes would be for heavily "used" or "damaged" armor, even over brass fasteners. They'll give the same rattling sound as loose rivets or other small components, without actually having the armor be structurally unsound.
Gotta admit, you completely remind me of Hiccup from How To Train Your Dragon! Everything from your voice and explanation just fits his character so well, it's like you're his Earth-dwelling twin brother :p

I have watched dozens of these tutorials online, this was one of the only ones that I took a good amount of information from. The rivets are great and the heated foam to improve the plasti-dip bond made me feel like an idiot for the last foam sword I made.

Having watched many videos on using the EVA foam, it's amazing that with a little time, effort and money you can make something that would take an armor smith weeks to forge! Truly amazing stuff sir. Keep up the fantastic work.
This is a great video about making the armor, but I want to know more on designing the templates. When you design a set of armor I believe you don't sketch the templates out right away, but how it looks like when it's finished. How exactly do you turn that into templates?
DemonWeasel1990 For real armor I would think you'd want something that can deform a little and take the hit without breaking. The harder a steel is the more brittle it becomes. Wouldn't spring steel be better?
This is foam dude. It's a PROP. In terms of effectiveness real armor that can absorb impact and flex to absorb impact is ideal. I made this piece LITERALLY just to demonstrate the process. Didn't really give 2 shits about accuracy.

Plasti-Dip does in NO way strengthen the foam. I glued the plates together with Hot glue. I attached the piece to myself using elastic and plastic buckles.

Is there a way to bevel the foam without a fancy tool? like some sort of... I dunno, sand paper? ((super beginner)) Another question- how would you go about actually attaching the armor to your body..?
kris I've been watching Evil Ted Smith's videos as well, and he suggested getting paint sticks and gluing sand paper onto it. If you want to see it in action, check out his "how to make female cosplay armor" videos.
amazing video, thanks!! I didn't know about plastidip seems a lot quicker than going over it with multiple layers of pvc first. Where do you buy your eva foam? eva floor mats that i've seen don't have a smooth surface as far as I know
You were super helpful, man! For real! You guys have the option to use other materials (like wonderflex, worbla...), but here in Brazil the ONLY thing we can find is EVA foam. Knowing how to use it is awesome, so thank you!

( sorry for my semi-bad english , i am from belgium) i study podiatry and we use EVA foam to make shoe laces to correct the foot stance , i learned that EAV has different shore values that tell the hardness going from gummybear soft to as hard as a car tire , you can't just use a heavy shore value for fine very small thin object that would just break , you'll have to find out what does the trick for you but i know a little trick , depending on the shore value you can stick your foam in a hot air oven about 140 - 150 °c and not longer then 5-7 min , ( for really hard foam) it gets hot and at that point shiney and flexible ,making it easy to cut and aftherwards if you would bend the foam to the desired shape it would cool down -+ 15 min and recovers it's density and shore , downside sometimes bending can be painful as the foam is super hot and need alot of force to keep the requierd shape at the workshop i use a lil' vacuumchamber to suck the EVA to a mold of a foot , ( burned my fingers and hand more then once ) so be careful doing it with you're own hands , also if it get hard and not the desired shape yett , you can reheat it again about 2 -3 times more , after that it starts to lose it's shore and gets softer , hopefully this was helpfull

There are some very cool tips here, like using the googly eyes and even how you put them on that are great for beginners. I'm now tempted to give it try with craft foam and a heat gun, but we'll see. You have a great technique and your stuff looks awesome!
This is an awesome video, even if you aren't crafting as you explain your process, this is great. And not counting your grinder and the propane tank all of your processes can be done by just about anyone. It's really fantastic and your finished product looks amazing. (-love- the googly eyes!). I will definitely be trying this out. I've played with making foam buffer swords out of pvc, cardboard and pool noodles but haven't attempted armor yet. But now I am totally inspired, and seeing how well the plasti-dip works is another great thing. Thank you! Great video!

Thanks so much for this tutorial. I was making a shoulder armor just like that from Inuyasha (his dad's armor) and I didn't know how to glue together all the pieces effectively. This really helps!

This tutorial has been really helpful. I've been wondering how to get a nice look painting on EVA foam. And that armor looks amazing. I'm going to try and use that technique for my bumblebee costume I'm currently in the process of making.

I'm working on (4) kids Predator cosplay costumes for some friends of mine.. what started as a Halloween costume for my son basically made out of cardboard plastic and 2 mm foam.. I think the armor came out okay but I did some research on the EVA foam cosplay materials and I like it very much so I have a prototype costume of the Predator jungle Hunter for my son which is made out of cardboard and plastic as mentioned I had my friends buy me all the materials I need to build predator costumes for their kids. You do amazing work and I appreciate the tips on how to cut and make the armor and painted as well..
My take on this video after watching the whole thing is that theres some good advice and some bad advice. And a note to everyone: Never stab your blade into anything, or throw it at anything, as it will break or dull it, and you need it sharp and strong to work its best. Also remember that in crafting, absolutely everything is your choice on how to design, assemble and paint. Thats one of the most appealing aspects of crafting is that you can be creative, and find your own way to make anything you want. Any single piece can be made so many different ways. Dont feel bad if you cant get the materials someone uses in a how to craft video, or you dont have the machinery they do, you can make it anyway. You can make sick armor and weapons with minimal tools, i assure you. And with materials you can find around the house. BE CREATIVE!
