Got here from his solo on I WANT TO BE HAPPY and Smiles with Lino Patruno & His All Stars. He get's completely possessed by the music towards the end. I was compelled to watch it a few times - you gotta see it. Inspiring and a joy to listen to, and what a line-up!

Evan is great! I used to listen to him all the time, down in the French Quarter’s New Orleans. Amazing clarinetist! He’s getting better and better all the time.

I met Evan in 1992 in college. It has been an overwhelming pleasure to know him and hear him play all these years. It is also fun when we take our daughters to the museum and zoo together. I am glad I got off my butt and went to hear him play last night.

"What an inspiration it is to hear somebody playing in the service of the music" - True... true... Moving wind have a peculiar non-describeable quality to it... it flows through the heart and tickles the brain

@@clarinetninja Still on the "inspiration" theme: I was looking through my RU-vid history and found the video that inspired me to finally decide for the clarinet as my first windy toy... I'm not good at remembering names, but guess who? 😜 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4JnXC3xxtww.html

There is something so special to hearing peiple that can play in a small place with no amplification.

That is true. Related to this idea...back when Evan changed to an Albert system clarinet (I had not seen him in almost ten years and didn't know) I walked into the club and actually asked him "why are you the only one mic'd?" His response "I am not being mic'd" There is something about the sound - which is clearly him...but also part of what the Albert system can do - that carries over darn near anything or anybody. It is something to behold. I was surprised by how clean the iPhone (with an additional mic) sounded given the environment.

I’m coming to NYC next month (November) and would love to see Evan. Can you share how I would find out where he’s playing? He’s a favourite ( can you tell I’m from Canada?)

Evan has a site named clarinet road. There is also a Facebook page. In terms of the ear inn specifically keep an eye on Jon Erik Kelso on Facebook. There is a different lineup every week at the ear. It’s always great but not always the same

That is the real world of playing. You Classical guys & girls need a certificate to teach kids who will never play a gig. Clt is The Voice. If I could sing like Sinatra, I would get a hair-cut & buy a new suit.

It’s pretty clear I think Evan is great and I love this music. I do take exception to your characterization of how possible it is to make money playing. I know plenty of wealthy people who play classical music exclusively. The busiest people are the most flexible. Additionally, there are many ways to play music in a amateur capacity that are very rewarding for many people. Do you go down to the local rec center and tell the people playing pick up games that they are wasting time because they will never play professional basketball?

Anyone know anything about Evan’s gear and setup? I am trying to get started as a clarinetist.

I can ask him next time I see him. I don’t know what brand, but I do know it’s an Albert system. I know the mouthpiece is very open. I wouldn’t think it’s a great place to start, but I am not the expert on that style of playing and what the starting place is gear wise
