Obviously they don’t make the call when they don’t see something. People seem to forget that refs aren’t omniscient beings who just decide when to miss calls.

Yup and partially some of that is on fans. It’s well known stars get more calls and get less foul calls against them. So much so that even announcers will mention stars who got 4 fouls really have to fight to get those last two fouls and get kicked from the game because they desperately try to keep stars playing so fans don’t complain about refs taking over a game and ruining it.

The refs have seminars and meetings about what to emphasize on who, when, and where. There are more bad calls for games that aren't nationally televised because the refs with the lowest percentage of accuracy call those games. That's why there's no consistency. Refs want to be more accurate because they ref better games and get paid more. The refs haven't changed much, it's social media that highlights bad calls and the league freaks out as a result. It's how 99% of business is run.
