I had an awful experience as a kid. I went swimming with a few older kids at a public pool. Two of the older boys swam in the deep end. They were accomplished swimmers. One of them had a cramp in the leg. When they fished him out, he had gone blue. I didn’t swim for a very long time. I taught myself how to swim when I worked abroad. Some two months ago, I decided to better myself by having swimmimg lessons.

Thank you for this video ! Lots of people don't understand of dangerous it can be to swim even if they're strong. Bear in mind that Alfred Nakache, an olympic medalist, died at sea because he was alone and he fainted.

I remember in a competition not too long ago, a woman had an underwater blackout, and her couch reacted immediately and saved her. It was all recorded, the video viralized.

I haven't tried long breath holds because my pool doesn't have coach for the supervision nor that many people who knows how to rescue.

You're very sensible. A guy passed out underwater at my pool doing hypoxic work. He was very lucky. The man swimming in the lane next to him was a doctor. He yelled for help and dove down to retrieve this man. The life guards were able to resuscitate him and he lived.

I remember watching a news segment about a young man who plunged into water (don’t remember what body of water), not knowing it’s shallow and having rock bottom. He suffered a spinal cord injury and paralyzed for life.

There's a couple right here on RU-vid. Quite a few years back, this man was with his High School buddies on the St. James in Virginia. He's now a Quadriplegic because he was diving in an area which was unbeknownst to them, shallow. By the time it registered in his brain how dangerous this was, he'd already dove in the water. He cracked his back in the cervical area. He could've died! His mother stated that her son knew better and the choices he made caused this serious, life altering experience. He knew how to swim. Today, his wife's his carer. Maybe it's the same guy! Eerily, my reply's similar to yours. He's a grown man, and was sixteen when this happened to him. He's very fortunate to have met this woman! She was his physical therapist when they met. They seem to a stable, happy couple. Same lesson applies here too! Experience does not always save one from a serious injury or death! Once the decision is made to proceed, there's no turning back. Please be safe everywhere there's water! One can drown in a bathtub.

I'm 51 and i swim in freewaters/could waters from 15years ago, stormy seas included. Always ALONE in water (in the winter, when waters goes bellow 5°c, sometimes i ask a friend (which isn't swimmer at all) to came and wait fir me at the car.. if i do not return, he have to anounce family and drive the car to them. I'm not affraid by dying making what i love to do, i would preffer to pass like that than to pass in some hospital infested with medication and depending by some strangers mercy. Last month i was swimming in a MARVELOUS lake between mountains/hills in northern greece, is about 21km long and 7km wide (on widest area),. Water inside is so clean and clear that was my only hidratation for 5hours of swim (i was drink it). I will go again in december. I use short neopren for body and head only bellow 4°c.. if i plan to swim over 1km without posibility to retreat if needed.

This is so appropriate and saddening. There was a death in the local gym pool just last week. Heard it was due to a heart attack, and there was no lifeguard.

For those wondering what the cold water passing out is like, lemme tell you about a similar experience. I'm not a good or even average swimmer, only real training I've done is for about half a yea when I was like 10 and a few more months when I was 17, so I can do the front crawl, backstroke, and somewhat do the butterfly, all at very ordinary paces. I have never had good cardio and I cant hold my breath for a good amount of time either. The pool was at my cousin's apartment complex, it was pretty darn cold, atleast compared to the pools I've been to. And I realized this as soon as I got in. It was very cold for my body, but I thought if I swim for long enough it'll become warm like it always does. After about 10 minutes I start to feel my muscles cramp, and a littl later they actually start to hurt, like frustrating amounts of pain and I am exhausted. Some more time and my cousin (elder than me, in his mid 20s) sees how exhausted I am and checks on me, and I said its okay lets do one last lap. I somehow finish the lap, end very slowly and im standing in the pool right next to the pavement. I can feel the exhaustion increasing, my muscles really are burning now, I'm not able to talk clearly, I'm looking up to the skies and then the lights go off. I see all sorts of weird black and white images, I see my parents (who had gone somewhere to do some important government related paperwork) going there, almost as if I was remotely able to see them going, honestly feels like your last moments. I remember this going on for a somehwat long time but who knows how long it really went on for, the lights are slowly switching on and I'm lying on the pavement face up looking at my younger brother and the afore mentinoed elder cousin. I try to sit up, doesnt happen, try again, go back, drink some glucose powder for energy, puke a little bit, somehow get back up to my feet with their support. This woud happen again around 2 years later when I went rafting in Georgia, although that time it was a lot more gradual and I didnt really black out, but I had those horrible cramps, the exhaustion, and a lot of saliva collected in my mouth that I eventually spat out. Despite these things happening I still love going to a swimming pool and swimming for fun as I always have, but the human body is a lot more delicate than we think, and I think I was pretty lcuky to not have anything life changing happen to me in those instances.

I wear my wetsuit in my car and jog a bit to generate heat before going into the sea (10 degrees celcius water) and always swim when the tide is coming in and wind is blowing towards the shore. That way if I run into problems I can hug my tow float and float to shore. (I live in the second windiest city in the world so wind factor is huge for me)

One of the strongest swimmers I knew drowned during an event. It was shallow water black out. It was an ocean swim and the current was strong...so sad.

Do you think it is possible to do 100 freestyle and 100 medley in less than 1 minute, for a person who is not an athlete, who just trains every day for the love of the sport? I'm 28 years old, I've been swimming for almost 2 years... I'm doing 1:15 in the 100 freestyle and 1:20 in the 100 medley today, I have this goal of doing it in less than 1 minute in these two events, but I don't know if it's possible to achieve without being an athlete... just training 1 hour a day after work and studies

I am a beachlifeguard and a swimming instructor for children in Germany. I know how important it is to not only teach swimming technique, but also water safety. Please don't be stupid and follow the advice of the local lifeguards when you want to take a swim at the beach. They don't want you to have a bad day, but they want tou to have a safe day. Only swim between the red and yellow beachflags at the beach which is an internationalsystem to mark safe spots at the beach. Only in this spots it is safe to swim without dangerous currents and lifeguards are there to supervise you.

Half of the population can't swim? I'd say much more. I never see any young people in the pool at the fitness. And when someone comes they rest after each lap.

I kind of agree. Even when they swim they weren’t doing it the right way (to get distance, speed, and least energy spent).

Important message to be sure, But I haven't found any supporting stats that drowning is the 5th leading cause of death in U.S. adults. For children, drowning is about 1 in 100,000 That's one too many, but not even close to #1 and #2, which are about 10 each.
